I think it has changed hands. I have walked passed previously and was intrigued by the very creative menu. However, when I finally got the chance to visit last week, the food was nothing like what was expected. It was degustation only. And it should really be called a set menu. The dishes were hastily put together. While I applaude the chef for effort in trying to mix flavours, nothing actually worked. Everything looked like a poor home cooked dish. NOTHING was plated, EVERYTHING served in a common plate and everyone had to help themselves.
Needless to say I will not be returning and certainly would not recommend it to anyone.
We went last night for my husband's 40th birthday with 25 friends and I couldn't wait to write my review and sing their praises! For $59 per person: corkage, coffee and a 6 course degustation plus soup is amazing value. Every course was delicious.
After a light soup we had:
Oysters in an orange/lime sauce
Figs wrapped in prosciuto
Soft shelled crab
Meatballs with rice and pine nuts and a side of kiwifruit and passionfruit sauce
Lamb with roast vegetables and a side sauce of coriander and lime
Birthday cake (compliments of the chef)
Dessert plate of small creme brulee, sticky date dessert, fresh fruit, mud cake, ice cream, caramel sauce.
Knowing I was pregnant, the chef advised which dishes I could not eat and made up for it with other dishes. Our vegetarian guest was well catered for too. The ambience was lovely the waiting staff even made an effort with our friends little baby to ensure our friends got to relax a little. The service was fantastic, 'not in your face' and the chef was just the nicest man.
Overall value? For $59 inclusive per person you really have to think this is great value. We arrived at 7.30 and left happy at midnight. A fantastic evening and all our guests agreed. We generally do not give rave reviews but we were so rapt with La Luce making my husband's birthday a good one.
Went to La Luce on Saturday night after making a booking. However, on arrival we were told "degustation only" which was a bit disappointing. However, we decided to stay and try it out, felt like there was a little bit too much going on with the flavours and too much inconsistency, sardines were fantastic but the rest of the dishes contained too much fruit -kiwi fruit was used in a lot of the dishes??.
The dessert platter is wonderful and huge! Staff are very attentive and friendly and the chef Geoff does make an effort to come out of the kitchen to introduce himself. However, myself and my partner felt that Geoff coming out to talk to us after every dish was, perhaps, a little bit too much.
I eat here the other night for a friends birthday, and it was fantastic! We had the degustation menu. Here's a quick breakdown of what it entailed:
Course 1 - Deep-fried Sardines, with some sort of lemon/parsley/garlic marinade.
Course 2 - Figs wrapped is Prosciutto
Course 3 - Leather Jacket Fish (not too sure what kind of marinade/sauce it was in)
Course 4 - Prawns in a garlic/orange sauce.
Course 5 - Lamb with Saffron Rice.
Course 6 - Creme Brule with an assortment of cakes (Baked Ricotta Cheesecake, Tiramasu, and some kind of black and white Jaffa cake)
I think there may have even been more! But after the fifth course when he offered "more mains?" ... we just asked for desserts. Most dishes were very tasty. I'm not a huge fish fan, so the leatherjacket didn't do too much for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed every other dish.
One problem though - we were the only ones in the restaurant that night! It was so odd, I've never experience it before. It's a shame not many people know about this great restaurant. I'd comment on the good service, but I suppose any restaurant that only caters for one group of 5 people in a night is bound to be more attentive than usual.
The chef was incredibly nice and very helpful. We had a vegetarian, who was catered for at every single course with his own individual vege substitute (from memory some of the things he had were vegetable rissoto, butternut squash ravioli, stuffed mushrooms). We also had someone allergic to figs, so for the prosciutto and fig course the chef whipped up an alternative for him.
And even better ... when he came out after one of the dishes and someone at the table hadn't eaten it and said it wasn't her thing, the chef was noticebly upset, and quickly ducked into the kitchen and fixed up a slow-cooked beef meal for her. Now that's service!
It would have been interesting to see how far we could take it, because as I said, he offered more mains but we chose to move straight to desserts. I'm thinking maybe we would have all gotten the slow cooked beef for a main, but I'm only guessing.
It was my parents anniversary last week, so i booked a table for 4 at La Luce, primarily based on the excellent reviews it has recieved on this site. My partner and myself accompanied my parents and we fell for the $59 degustation menu..
The food was unbelievable. Plate after plate of delicious food. I'll try to remember what we had:
Entrees--
1. Prawns in a kind of sweet sauce, maybe some kiwi fruit or something -- beautiful
2. Sardines which may have been fried, not too sure -- i had never tried sardines before and the taste was a little strong, however i squeeze some lime on it and the acid in the lime quickly neutralised some of the taste and made it a much less powerful dish. I finished off the sardine, so it must have been good :)
3. Vol-Au-Vents -- That was a guess at how to spell it :) These were beautiful, they tasted like it may have has some prawns and asparagus in there topped with some beautiful cheese.. One of my favourites
4. Figs wrapped in Prosciutto -- These were another one of my favourites, these were Israeli Figs and the Prosciutto complemented them perfectly, the balance between the savoury of the Prosciutto and the sweetness of the figs was perfect
5. Lamb Cutlets - Also beautiful, these were maybe fried in some sort of batter, was really quite nice, just not enough!! :) I was hoping for something bigger, but i did not know what was to come..
Mains
6. Pasta -- This pasta had prawns, crab meat, olives and capers + alot of other stuff in there (too much to remember) but there was not one flavour in there which overpowered the others and the sauce was outstanding, tasted like he had used gorgonzola cheese, so it was not the typical napolitana sauce which you generally get with the seafood pasta, it was a much creamier and lighter coloured sauce and it was fantastic
7. The most tender beef, EVER -- This beef which we were served as our final dish was soooooooooooo tender you could barely use the tongs to transfer it onto the plate. Although my piece was rather fatty, my partners was quite possibly the best bit of beef she had ever tried (and that is something cuz trust me, her mum can cook some damn good beef!) Served with some veges, was damn good stuff and a great dish to finish up on..
We then asked for a little break before the desserts came out..
15-20 mins later we were confronted by Mudcakes, Vanilla Mousse, Creme Broulee, Ice-cream, Tiramisu and fresh rockmelon + watermelon
After we ploughed our way through those, we each had a cappucino and then we looked at our watches..
11:10PM!! We had been there since 7:00PM!! It is not everyday in which you find a restaurant in which you can spend 4 hours with your parents of all people!
The restaurant is humbly decorated, but that does not take away from the ambience created. The patrons are actually quiet in this restaurant (A rarity on Norton St) and you dont have to shout to the person across from you to be heard,, you can actually carry out a civilised conversation!! AMAZING!
Staff were excellent, always attentive and catered to our every need and the chef/owner is a fantastic man. He also owns the restaurant next door 'Pavarottis on Norton' and also owns the largest restaurant in Sydney, for which he caters for 7,600 people each day.. Yep.. He feeds the homeless and he has gotten a health clinic for troubled people up and running
Fantasic man
Fantastic food
Fantastic dining experience.. No dining experience does not do it justice.. It was a delightful culinary journey and the journey departs from 165 Norton St
Amazing service! The person I went with is a coeliac and can't eat gluten. Understandably this makes eating out a little difficult. The staff at La Luce were most accommodating and gracious - the chef not only improvised a meal, but promised that next time, with enough notice, he would ensure there was a gluten free meal on the menu. It's the attention to detail that makes this place stand out.
La Luce is fabulous, the food is amazing, the service is attentive and the chef is kind, customer-friendly, and incredibly talented. It only lost a couple points on ambience for me because there was almost no-one else there as no-one has really heard of how great the food is! We had the 6-course degustation - $59pp!! Amazing value and the food is high quality and mouth watering. You must try it
Recently ate at La Luce in Norton St and found that the most popular dish Carpet bag steak! Wow! good to see a well known dish on the menu. The chef approached us to see if we were pleased with our food. Now, there's another observation that I made and that was that you are made most welcomed with staff as well as good food. The ambience is very warm as well as relaxing. Overall a wonderful restaurant to visit and I strongly will be recommending friends to go and try it out. Keep up the good work La Luce, food and service are fantastic!!!
