Overview
The name La Boheme has several meanings including life in Bohemia (the main part of the Czech Republic). La Boheme brings the best of Central Europe’s traditional “home-style” foods such as Crispy Pork Knuckle from Germany, Golden Roasted Duck with sauerkraut and potato dumplings from the Czech Republic and Belgium Beer Mussels.
We aim to create a relaxed environment for our guests where they can spend time discovering other cultures by sampling from our wide variety of dishes, beers and wines. The restaurant is warm and welcoming decorated with restored furnishings creating a feeling of history and longevity while remaining sophisticated and free of clutter.
The chef’s / owners are Czech and have worked in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and of course here in Australia (opened Prague Czech Beer Restaurant). This breadth of experience means that they can bring the best of many European cuisines to Balmain.
Soo so good, it's a little santuary away from Darling st. Can't wait for the warmer days to spend it in the courtyard and sample many of the fabulous beverages. The dessert plate just huge easily feed 3 people. The food is so tasty and always feel very content when leaving!
I was craving a schnitzel and I got it here. I was disappointed that they only did chicken schnitzel. It was about 5 out of 10. The ambience of the place is the highlight. The food though good, was not impressive. I would come back and try other things. Beware, the crepe suzette does not come with orange brandy syrup.
One of the great things about this restaurant is it is actually opened on Monday night. Dropped by here on the way home from work and the restaurant is three quarters full by 8.30. There were both large groups and couples.
Located in a heritage building in the heart of Balmain, it is very pretty with its timber cathedral ceilings and soft chandelier lighting, not a Czech/German beer hall. My traditional Czech soup entree was very nice with a touch of spice but the highlight was the golden roasted duck with its light crispy skin. Great dining experience will certainly go back.
Came back here on a saturday night with a group of friends. We were restricted to eleven as anymore we would have had to have the set menu. General consensus was everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the feasting plate for one, a bit of everything. The schnitzel and ribs were delightful although I thought the duck was a bit dry this time. Others had the chargrilled grain fed beef, beef stroganoff and the Belgian beer mussels which they were happy with.
Coming to a central european restaurant it is almost obligatory to try the beers and the restaurant has a good range. I can recommend the krusovice lager and I was told the "delirium" beer was one not to be missed.
Went to see what the buzz was about, it was not there on a Friday afternoon at 3 pm! No other diners, yet we had to wait, no 'complimentary soft rolls and crunchy duck crackling for us'! But persevered, two rolls and a small dish of duck rendering arrived, but it was just that, duck fat, none of this wonderful small crispy, rendered crunchy bits that have been reviewed by others.
When the main dishes arrived, what a disappointment, both were barely luke warm, not the best with fatty meats. We had ordered the duck and the meat platter for one. The duck was not golden and crispy, it was cold and fatty! My husbands dish, although different was no better, and neither of them were assisted with a huge splash of 'bisto gravy, of no certain origin'.
We left, with indigestion, no feeling of warmth, and seriously bad food, and knowing we had spent more than we shoud have. Simple good pub grub of a good plain homemade burger, a salad and if feeling indulgent a large dollop of a home made mayo, whatever would have been a better feeling, and probably less $!
Response from Management:
Dear Diners,
My name is Edita I am one of the owners and I waited on your table during your lunch at La Boheme Restaurant on Friday afternoon. After reading your review I decided to reply as my impression this afternoon was different. I was certain that the atmosphere was relax and friendly. Your review came as a surprise.
At 3 pm you had choice of dining in the cafe area or in the restaurant area (two different menus available). At the time there was also another table in the restaurant and many more customers in the cafe. The choice of the table was only yours.
Our duck cracklings are "complimentary" and are served during dinner only. After your request this complimentary dish was also served to you immediately as they would be during dinner - free of charge. The lady had ordered golden roasted duck (“she had her heart set on it”); on my question if she would like 1/4 or 1/2 of the duck she had asked if we do "doggie bag". Yes we are happy to do so. She had ordered 1/2 of the duck, her husband had ordered Bavarian feast platter for one. During the meal I have asked if they are enjoying the meal and the answer was YES. At the end of their meal (the lady ate the whole duck) we joked that she does not even need to take anything home. The lady also said that she is so full she will not need any dinner. Her husband also ate the whole dish without any complain. No request for additional gravy or comment about temperature of any of those two dishes. The waiting time for the meals was nothing out of ordinary. Both dishes needed to be prepared up to the quality so many other diners have enjoyed here at the restaurant. If you are not happy to wait 20 minutes for fresh home made food you really need to go to pub or take away shop where the price will also be more favourable. I would also suggest that if the customer is not happy with the food that have been served to him, he should complain on the spot so the food can be exchanged or other action taken to make every customer happy. The gentleman also left $10.00 tip (more then 10% of the bill) - which indicates that they were happy at the time they were leaving the restaurant.
I have to say on behalf of the whole team here at La Boheme that each complain about food or service really hurt even after many years in hospitality industry not only here in Australia but also back in Europe. Here at La Boheme we offer unique experience in a beautiful heritage building and every staff member understand how important it is to ensure that every customer leave happy and satisfied.
I am really sorry to hear that you left disappointed and we could not make your day more enjoyable.
Reminded me of dining in the Czech Republic. Service was particularly good. The Beef Stragonoff was very tasty although the side of beans was perhaps a little too smoky. The strudel would have been sensational if it had been just baked however this one was straight from the microwave and was a little limp. Certainly worth another visit, perhaps the mid week schnitzel special.
I only knew about this restaurant through this website and found it in the entertainment book as well, so my family thought we would give this a go for dinner on a cold Saturday night.
The venue of the restaurant has a nice traditional/homely atmosphere and since there was five of us, we were seated downstairs on their big wooden tables. There was so much space, it was a nice change to the small tables you see in some venues.
As we were dining early, the service was friendly but at the end we felt rush as they were taking away plates even when there was one diner still eating his dinner. We still had another 45mins before we had to leave.
We ordered the bavarian platter, the schnitzel and the mussel along with a few different beers to try. While the food servings are large and tasty, it wasn't amazing. Still it was a great night overall and we saved with the entertainment cards.
