Overview of La Locanda

La Locanda (meaning the Inn) a beautifull little dining room in Bronte usually with a queue out the door. The reason ? Well prices are good. La Locanda's clientele are good looking, the space is small, cramped, packed and thoroughly handsome. Authentic Italian food, a small blackboard menu which changes often, home made pasta including signature dish of Pappardelle with duck and pea ragu. Simple Italian food served with a smile.

If I had read the recent reviews, I probably wouldn't have gone here, which would have been a shame. The place is far from perfect, but my experience was nothing like some of these rather scathing reviews. Carpaccio was delicious, slow cooked lamb was very good, service was nice. Bread rolls very below average given Sydney's best bakery is down the road, and $1.00 each, would expect better. Nice atmosphere, very clean. Wouldn't rush in, but wouldn't avoid it either.

Very average. The staff were not overly helpful. We felt we were intruding and really were not very welcome. The food was not very exciting. I had heard good reviews but was disappointed.

The worst experience I ever had in my life! I started with a very small frozen calamari stuffed with some disgusting things, then I had Pappardelle with 2 pieces of duck and 5 I say 5 peas. One glass of warm wine, total price 60 dollar! Unbelievable! I will never come back in this French Italian restaurant.

We were so disappointed in our experience at La Locanda. We went for Valentines Day and were so looking forward to a nice meal out. The restaurant offered a 2 or 3 course menu (with a choice of 3 options for each course) for the evening with no BYO.

The service was poor from the moment we arrived. While us and another couple waited for tables, another couple waltzed right in sat themselves down and were greeted by the Maitre d' while we stood there waiting. Once seated we had to ask for the wine list, ask for our order to be taken, ask 3 times for bread and then sat with our plates in front of us for a good 20 minutes upon finishing and then had to ask to order dessert. It's been a long time since I've experienced service this poor.

We ordered the entree of calamari (I had heard rave reviews about this but found it to be average on the night) and the mozzarella (nothing special) and as we had heard such great things about the duck ragu both chose that for a main but were so disappointed, the duck was dry, pasta was stuck together and there was no sauce, isn't a ragu meant to be saucy?

The chocolate cake we shared for dessert was the highlight of the meal, though I am perplexed why we were charged for 2 x 2 course meals and then a dessert added on, rather than 1 x 2 course and 1 x 3 course meals? Go figure but by that stage of the night not worth trying to catch one of the wait staffs attention to question why we had been charged more.

As we are now locals of the area we were hoping to find a great local restaurant to frequent, however, we won't be returning. I know it was Valentines Day and they were busy but it's a night where people want to ensure that they have a memorable meal and this one was memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Pretty bland overall. Looks like pasta is the safest choice. Otherwise very mediocre. Staff are not really interested and appear grumpy. The dessert was great though, try the chocolate cake.

What a delightful place and walking distance from home. We had booked a table for two at 7.00pm, were promptly shown to our table. Water and a saucer of excellent olives arrived almost instantly and our waitress discussed the menu with us. We shared the antipasti, calamari ripeni, salcici with a delicious relish, burrata, beautifully presented.

My main was a portion of barramundi, crisp skin on top, moist flesh inside, served on a warm salad of capsicum strips, cannellini and baby green beans. The Meat Man's roast lamb was a generous serve of tender, juicy meat. We had a glass of prosecco each to start, then a glass of white for me, red for MM, chosen from a short but well selected list. ("Short" is not a criticism - I prefer to look at a few good wines, rather than a huge list of mundane items, I also imagine storage space here is limited).

Service was good. When we left to stroll home the restaurant was filling up, judging by the way staff and diners greeted each other, most were regulars.

Had dinner here a few weeks ago with a friend. Food was absolutely delicious, I had the stuffed calamari and my friend the mussels. Mains we had the barramundi and the fish of the day which was jewfish fillets. The servings were enough for us.

Service was good until it came to pay the bill, that is when they forgot about us. Tables are close together but its is not that bad. I did not notice the conversation nor the people on the table next to us.

This small place I come to heaps when in Bronte. The food is the best Italian food around. The girls love their desserts.

We came here with a group. It is on the cosy side but that does add to the ambience somewhat. The menu is written on a blackboard and is all in Italian. The waitress spent time describing the dishes for us. Some of us were eager to have the roast special but it had sold out. We ended up having the duck pappardelle and the lamb. Both dishes were terrific. The pappardelle was hand made and tasted very fresh. The duck was well done and the sauce complemented the whole dish. The lamb shoulder was moist and tender accompanied with a lovely sauce and tasty shallots.

In summary, this is a great little authentic italian restaurant. They have a small menu, but from what we tried, they do it well.
