The food was lovely. We had the rocket and pear salad, souffle (which was stunning) and mussels. The mussels were fresh and tasted wonderful. The baguette was authentic and my partner loved the cheese souffle. The wine here is expensive but the service was pleasant and on the whole it was a nice place to have a special lunch.
Just been to LGB for dinner. Though the heat wasn't ideal (for an open air restaurant), we expected more from the food, the souffle and scallops were great entrees. Service was merely adequate but staff weren't going out of their way to make you feel wanted/special. The biggest concern was the speed of when the meals were served.
For example, it was about 15 minutes between ordering and serving and 10 minutes between entree and main course. At that rate (with bread too), we were too full for dessert and just wanted to get home. It's a decent place for brunch but dinner didn't hit expectations.
First time to LGB. What a wonderful experience. Degustation menu was superb. Service was faultless and ambience very warm and welcoming. Can't wait to dine there again. Recommend it highly.
Love this restaurant. Has never let me down. The butter and bread are as French as possible, and even apparently simple dishes are prepared with a definite different French flare. I can't make stuff like this at home. And the ambience is great. The terrine is superb and the sauces are magnifique.
We have been here frequently for breakfast and occasionally for dinner. Love their baguettes, but everything on their breakfast menu is been great. The waiters can be a bit stressed sometime, but we like that they tend to be actually French. Been there twice for dinner (with friends) and it always was very enjoyable (degustation/menu).
My favourite restaurant to eat. I love the french feel and the summer air that is able to blow through the large open windows. Great ambience. The food is lovely, though it may be able to work on the service since not many of the waiters seemed to be able to speak fluent english. All in all, best restaurant in town!
I am confused by all the glowing reviews on here, however, the negative reviews exactly mirror my own experience. Given they seem to be mostly the breakfast/ brunch crowd, the proprietor really needs to sort out this discrepancy.
I hadn't heard anything about this place when 3 friends and I chanced upon it for breakfast last weekend. It was maybe half full, and looked impressive so we figured we'd give it a shot.
The biggest issue here was the staff. There was one main waiter who was running round taking orders, and he is not the kind of person you want being the face of your restaurant. He was rude, impatient, and inattentive. He made us feel like we were wasting his time and inconveniencing him in wanting to order food. When he finally came to take our order he came and stood behind the table and glared at us, notepad in hand.
One coffee order arrived incorrect (instead of a cap with 3/4 milk, a regular cap was delivered), and when we tried to explain what the problem was he grabbed the coffee and stormed off. 5 minutes later he came back with another regular cap, placed on the table and stormed off again, not giving us the chance to point out that he still didn't get it right (a number of episodes occurred like this during the meal).
The food was average at best, $16 for a 'big' breakfast that included a single tiny rasher of bacon and a burnt half a baguette of about 10cmx4cm. The coffee was poor to average. The service really ruined the meal and we'd never go back.
The room has a warm, buzzy feeling, created by the combination of bold wallpaper, funky light fittings and the huge picture windows that open onto Darling Street.
The staff are friendly and attentive, and all appear to be french speaking. Our food arrived just a little too quickly, and the waiters forgot to ask us if we wanted coffees. Star dishes were the fish of the day (Mulloway on a white bean puree with a crab salad) and the prune creme brulee. Short list of wines by the glass.
Good value at $60 for 3 courses. I have tried the degustation on a previous visit, if time and budget permits this is worth doing.
I dined here on a work Christmas function and was excited given the reviews below! However, I found the overall experience slightly disappointing. Perhaps, it was not entirely due to the restaurant itself, but the other factors, extremely hot day (39 degrees), and large number of guests (around 40). However, I would like to give this restaurant another try, perhaps, on a more intimate scale.
Food - The food was fantastic. I had an 8 course degustation, each course cooked and delivered to perfection. Only slight disappointment was the Petit Fours, and Assiette Fromage. Each course was delivered with matching wines which added to the gastranomic experience.
Ambience - As I stated before, it was a rather hot day, and there was no air conditioning in the restaurant. Therefore, it was a rather unpleasant experience in terms of ambience. But, not something that would impair me from dining on another occasion.
Service - Due to the large numbers, the staff tried their best to cater for all our requests. But, there were a number of occasions when things were forgotten (eg, new glasses/cutlery).
Value - It is a great restaurant which pays homage to French cooking. The prices are reasonable, and the kitchen delivers flawlessly. Would highly recommend for a romantic, chic dinner.
