The name La Boheme has several meanings including life in Bohemia (the main part of the Czech Republic). La Boheme brings the best of Central Europe’s traditional “home-style” foods such as Crispy Pork Knuckle from Germany, Golden Roasted Duck with sauerkraut and potato dumplings from the Czech Republic and Belgium Beer Mussels.
We aim to create a relaxed environment for our guests where they can spend time discovering other cultures by sampling from our wide variety of dishes, beers and wines. The restaurant is warm and welcoming decorated with restored furnishings creating a feeling of history and longevity while remaining sophisticated and free of clutter.
The chef’s / owners are Czech and have worked in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and of course here in Australia (opened Prague Czech Beer Restaurant). This breadth of experience means that they can bring the best of many European cuisines to Balmain.

Have been here a few times, and while the service varies, the food is always excellent. Heavy Czech/Austrian food is never going to be fine dining but for what it is it's great. Hearty portions (as one would expect), tasty, accompanied by traditional czech beers. On our last visit, we had mentioned when making the reservation that a Czech relative was visiting and asked if their favourite dish was on the menu.
Unfortunately, it was not. Nevertheless we made the reservations and when we arrived the waiter told us the chef had prepared her favourite dish especially for our visitor. Now that is good service.

Nothing more to say that hasn't already been said. This is a favourite of my wife and I. The maitradee knows us by now even though we've only been 4 times. Our most recent visit was tonight and he even remembered where we sat last time around (3 months ago). Not a bad feat for such a busy restaurant. This place is a buzz with the Bohemian vibe and it really gives off a homely, cozy feel. Marry this up with the comfort food and great service and you have a winner.
There isn't much that could be improved upon. It's obvious the maitradee (quite possibly the proprietor) values the relationships he has developed with his staff and customers. It's the small things that matter. Most of the service staff are overseas students and travellers. The Euro accents only help to lend creed and a healthy degree of authenticity. After all, La Boheme is selling an experience... not just food.
Try the pork knuckle if you're feeling hungry. Served with Bavarian bread, mustard, horseradish and sauerkraut it is the perfect partner to the reasonably priced selection of Bavarian beers available on tap (up to 1L in size). My wife isn't a carnivore like me, but loves the beef medallions. She's also notoriously fussy about her coffee, but she loves La Boheme's cappuccinos.
This is how this sort of cuisine should be prepared, served and ultimately eaten. Other "German" and "Belgian" establishments should take note.

The food is very good with generous portion sizes. The waiter was extremely good and the felix vasse wine was excellent. This is the sort of food you get at a very good restaurant in Europe. Amazing.

First let me preface this by saying that I eat out a lot both in Australia and overseas. I ate at La Boheme for the first time last saturday with my wife. "One of the best restaurants I have ever been too". Efficient, professional and friendly service from the fellow who greeted us when we arrived to the young blonde European waitress who waited on us upstairs.
A spectacular effort by staff considering ( the stairs, how tiring for staff) and full house. The complimentary appetiser was very tasty. We ordered the presswurst, duck pate and platter of grilled meat. Simply awesome! Very good value for money considering the beautiful location, flawless service and great food.
Already counting the days down until we can return. Finally, I recommend all restaurant managers/owners in Sydney attend La Boheme and "see how its done".

The food was incredible! They bought out hot bread rolls with duck liver pate for free, they had a great range of vegetarian food (Heavy emphasis on cheeses though, which I loved). They also had incredible meat platters, The Bavarian Feast is not to be missed. The selection of european beer and liqueurs was fantastic and very well priced. The waiters were attentive and very friendly, they all had very pleasant accents that added to the feel of the night. I plan on going here again soon!.

The food is very Eastern European and absolutely superb. There is a good variety for vegetarians and meat lovers, great selection of imported European beers, big servings and service is good. I've been on a Fri and Sat, and they have a performer who sings to background music which can feel cheesy but it's very enjoyable at the same time as it puts a smile on your face.

What a beautiful Sunday Evening. We (myself, my boyfriend and a friend) ate at La Boheme for the first time on Sunday. My boyfrind is Czech and is still raving about his dumplings filled with berries he finished his meal with. He started with the house soup which I think was potato and spinach, I tasted it and it was amazing. He then had the duck, it was beautiful and cripsy.
I started with the French Snails followed by the Belgium Beer Mussels. The gravy from the mussels I soaked up with some bread, I just couldn't leave it. The staff were attentive and made us feel welcome. We will certainly be going back to La Boheme.
The only reason I have not marked La Boheme with 4 10's is that I haven't eaten at all the restaurants in Sydney.

I have to laugh at this restaurant coming up as vegetarian-friendly. It most certainly isn't. I eat meat so I was happy but others in our party were vegetarian. They were told they could have pickled cabbage or deep fried vegetables. That was it.

This was our second sitting at this very beautiful restaurant with extremely friendly staff, however the food is very very poor. My first selection from the menu was the Beef medallions, it was nothing more than minute steak with some sauce and mash.
Last night I selected the Chicken breast with ginger and chilli and croquetts, which was 2 breasts of chicken overcooked and dried out, with some oven fried wedges, I couldn't eat the chicken, it was bland with no flavour, we were with a party of 12 and the general comment was poor food with no flavour.
I don't mind paying for a good meal, but to tell you the truth $30 for what I dished up was insulting. No! We will not ever dine there again, we have tried it twice to give it the benefit of the doubt however to many other wonderful restaurants in Balmain and Rozelle.
