The name La Boheme has several meanings including life in Bohemia (the main part of the Czech Republic). La Boheme brings the best of Central Europe’s traditional “home-style” foods such as Crispy Pork Knuckle from Germany, Golden Roasted Duck with sauerkraut and potato dumplings from the Czech Republic and Belgium Beer Mussels.
We aim to create a relaxed environment for our guests where they can spend time discovering other cultures by sampling from our wide variety of dishes, beers and wines. The restaurant is warm and welcoming decorated with restored furnishings creating a feeling of history and longevity while remaining sophisticated and free of clutter.
The chef’s / owners are Czech and have worked in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and of course here in Australia (opened Prague Czech Beer Restaurant). This breadth of experience means that they can bring the best of many European cuisines to Balmain.

The ambience is great, a little tucked away piece of Europe in Balmain. Service was welcoming and friendly. Great to sit outside for breakfast/coffee as well as dinner. The entrees were pleasant, however, escargot not good restaurant quality.
The mains were good, but not great, not on par with the same food offered in Europe and some other Similar European style restaurants in Oz. As the owners are European themselves, I would have thought they would have more influence in the quality of the food. Although maybe I am just spoilt beacuse I have had such great experiences with similar food in Europe.
I would reccommend that you visit at least once though as it is a nice place and something different.

Soo so good, it's a little santuary away from Darling st. Can't wait for the warmer days to spend it in the courtyard and sample many of the fabulous beverages. The dessert plate just huge easily feed 3 people. The food is so tasty and always feel very content when leaving!

I was craving a schnitzel and I got it here. I was disappointed that they only did chicken schnitzel. It was about 5 out of 10. The ambience of the place is the highlight. The food though good, was not impressive. I would come back and try other things. Beware, the crepe suzette does not come with orange brandy syrup.

Went to see what the buzz was about, it was not there on a Friday afternoon at 3 pm! No other diners, yet we had to wait, no 'complimentary soft rolls and crunchy duck crackling for us'! But persevered, two rolls and a small dish of duck rendering arrived, but it was just that, duck fat, none of this wonderful small crispy, rendered crunchy bits that have been reviewed by others.
When the main dishes arrived, what a disappointment, both were barely luke warm, not the best with fatty meats. We had ordered the duck and the meat platter for one. The duck was not golden and crispy, it was cold and fatty! My husbands dish, although different was no better, and neither of them were assisted with a huge splash of 'bisto gravy, of no certain origin'.
We left, with indigestion, no feeling of warmth, and seriously bad food, and knowing we had spent more than we shoud have. Simple good pub grub of a good plain homemade burger, a salad and if feeling indulgent a large dollop of a home made mayo, whatever would have been a better feeling, and probably less $!
Response from Management:
Dear Diners,
My name is Edita I am one of the owners and I waited on your table during your lunch at La Boheme Restaurant on Friday afternoon. After reading your review I decided to reply as my impression this afternoon was different. I was certain that the atmosphere was relax and friendly. Your review came as a surprise.
At 3 pm you had choice of dining in the cafe area or in the restaurant area (two different menus available). At the time there was also another table in the restaurant and many more customers in the cafe. The choice of the table was only yours.
Our duck cracklings are "complimentary" and are served during dinner only. After your request this complimentary dish was also served to you immediately as they would be during dinner - free of charge. The lady had ordered golden roasted duck (“she had her heart set on it”); on my question if she would like 1/4 or 1/2 of the duck she had asked if we do "doggie bag". Yes we are happy to do so. She had ordered 1/2 of the duck, her husband had ordered Bavarian feast platter for one. During the meal I have asked if they are enjoying the meal and the answer was YES. At the end of their meal (the lady ate the whole duck) we joked that she does not even need to take anything home. The lady also said that she is so full she will not need any dinner. Her husband also ate the whole dish without any complain. No request for additional gravy or comment about temperature of any of those two dishes. The waiting time for the meals was nothing out of ordinary. Both dishes needed to be prepared up to the quality so many other diners have enjoyed here at the restaurant. If you are not happy to wait 20 minutes for fresh home made food you really need to go to pub or take away shop where the price will also be more favourable. I would also suggest that if the customer is not happy with the food that have been served to him, he should complain on the spot so the food can be exchanged or other action taken to make every customer happy. The gentleman also left $10.00 tip (more then 10% of the bill) - which indicates that they were happy at the time they were leaving the restaurant.
I have to say on behalf of the whole team here at La Boheme that each complain about food or service really hurt even after many years in hospitality industry not only here in Australia but also back in Europe. Here at La Boheme we offer unique experience in a beautiful heritage building and every staff member understand how important it is to ensure that every customer leave happy and satisfied.
I am really sorry to hear that you left disappointed and we could not make your day more enjoyable.

Reminded me of dining in the Czech Republic. Service was particularly good. The Beef Stragonoff was very tasty although the side of beans was perhaps a little too smoky. The strudel would have been sensational if it had been just baked however this one was straight from the microwave and was a little limp. Certainly worth another visit, perhaps the mid week schnitzel special.

Lovely food, nice atmosphere but wait staff were incredibly rude. Wouldn't go back because of the insulting and rude service.

We came here after reading some good reviews about this restaurant but was sorely disappointed. The food was very average, my jewfish was dry and tasteless.

Let me sum this in one word: wow! A Czech friend had been here before and recommended it so we thought we'd give it a try.
The first thing that hits you when you enter through the courtyard is the warm and inviting atmosphere, being inside what looks like an old school/church looking building. The place has a very rustic (in the most positive way) feeling to it with wooden beams and beautiful wrought iron chandeliers above head. There were two types of tables here, small intimate tables for two, which we were fortunate enough to get one upstairs further away from all the foot traffic and the large group tables seating groups of 8+.
This place certainly offers a lot of different European flavoured (/"themed") dishes but I dare say that the Czech influence is the strongest. Having never tried anything really eastern European I was hoping and anticipating that I would be treated to something hearty yet not too basic and something flavoursome but not too modern/fusion, and boy was I treated! Almost immediately after we sat down we were treated to a complimentary dish of warm soft bread rolls with what I believed was a duck crackling dip, it was superb!
After that we moved on to entrees. We decided to share a bowl of the creamy mushroom and potato soup and a platter of crumbed mushrooms filled with cheese (think Arancini but with mushroom and blue cheese instead of risotto). We were both impressed by the size of the meals so far and in anticipation of the mains I enjoyed some Czech beer on tap and my partner had a white wine I unfortunately didn't try.
The main course was the single most exciting degustation experience I've had in a long time! I had ordered the Traditional Bavarian Feast Platter which in the name itself it suggests that you're up for something! When it arrived there was half of a menagerie on my plate and trust me, that is a good thing! I like meat and lots of it too! There were one half duck, schnitzel, lamb sausages, a rack of spare ribs, sauerkraut, red cabbage, and three different types of dumpling and gravy from a little gravy boat. Now, just looking at this makes you full and it took me some time to work thru it and I had to inhibit the carnivore in me to eat with my hands.
My partner had the Jäger Chicken Schnitzel in mushroom sauce and mashed potato which I didn't try (apart from the one on my plate) but she loved it! For dessert we shared the Belgian Chocolate Mousse which was delicious! It had a touch of coffee in it which really topped it off!
The staff here are really attentive and friendly and always make sure you have enough water in the water glass, a small but very appreciated detail! Will definitely come here again!

Came with a Czech friend and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Great cosy atmosphere with an authentic Eastern European feel. Enjoyed sampling several excellent beers with truly knowledgeable and insightful guidance from our very attentive waitress. We ordered a variety of dishes and all the food was wonderful, although, be prepared for massive portions - and it is quite heavy. But that's what we came for! If you've never had a pig's knuckle this is the place to try it - delicious, tender meat and not greasy at all. Highly recommended.

You have to really like meat to get a full appreciation of this place, I think...
My carnivorous boyfriend and his equally-carnivorous friend practically ate themselves into a meat-induced coma on the very busy Wednesday night that we went to La Boheme. The Pork Knuckle that they shared was a particular hit and that was just for an entree! My salmon was OK, nothing special, but it's probably not one of their specialities.
Even though I'm not a meat-fan myself, I still enjoyed the atmosphere. It's a great building. The service was good too, relaxed enough to let us enjoy our converstaion, without getting annoyingly slow. Great beer too.
