The name La Boheme has several meanings including life in Bohemia (the main part of the Czech Republic). La Boheme brings the best of Central Europe’s traditional “home-style” foods such as Crispy Pork Knuckle from Germany, Golden Roasted Duck with sauerkraut and potato dumplings from the Czech Republic and Belgium Beer Mussels.
We aim to create a relaxed environment for our guests where they can spend time discovering other cultures by sampling from our wide variety of dishes, beers and wines. The restaurant is warm and welcoming decorated with restored furnishings creating a feeling of history and longevity while remaining sophisticated and free of clutter.
The chef’s / owners are Czech and have worked in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and of course here in Australia (opened Prague Czech Beer Restaurant). This breadth of experience means that they can bring the best of many European cuisines to Balmain.

I first ate here over a year ago with a large group for lunch. We had such an memorable day, so much so that we returned all the way from Double Bay, we felt as though we were sitting in a little restaurant somewhere in Eastern Europe.
My wife and I felt that the standout dishes were, the pork knuckle, loved the beetroot horseradish, the mushrooms, Svickova and hot raspberries. The food, service and atmosphere isn't pretending to be anything it isn't and is worth every cent. We highly recommend.

I was at the restaurant last Friday and I must to say I've had a great time! We were 2 adults and 2 kids (1 and 3 yo). Wait-staff were so friendly and helpful at some point (you know kids). We really appreciate their effort to make our kids feel very welcome!. Food was excellent, very tasty, especially their crispy duck! and mussels. I would recommend this venue for every family! Thank you!

I was quite excited to go to La Boheme for dinner, especially after seeing their menu online. Needless to say, it was a very big disappointment. The waiting staff was quite pleasant at first, but when the issue of an overly salty meal was reported, I was advised that it was "normal" that mussels were salty since they lived in the see/ocean. My friend ordered the Bavarian Feast Platter, but the meat was very dry, especially the duck.
I would never go back there again. The fact that all the nice comments were from 1 year ago, seems to indicate that the kitchen staff has changed and the quality dropped. What I don't understand is why there are no further comments since Aug last year.

I booked this restaurant for a few friends and had been looking forward to this for weeks prior. I didn't have outstanding expectations of the food but I at least thought it would be "nice". The restaurants itself had a nice atmosphere, the service was attentive, although majorly let down by the food which was way below average, if not inedible for most of our dishes!
Our starter was some pretzels which were totally encrusted with salt crystals and the herbed camembert with two tiny slices of fruit bread barely big enough for even One person. Again, it came with a portion of herbed butter that was so salty you just couldn't eat it (not that I don't like salty food!). What I really do wonder is whether the kitchen staff actually tastes his food before sending it out to customers?
For the mains one of us had the schnitzel which looked quite nice although the sauerkraut was very poor and wondered if it had been out of a tin (again Salt was the let down).
I, myself, had the Bavarian feast which was basically a meat platter served also with sauerkraut. Every piece of the meat on the platter was dried out and it was such a shame! You could barely even taste the nice flavours of the meat. I guess I would have really enjoyed it if it hadn't been so overcooked to the point where you couldn't even cut it!
The 3rd person at our table ordered the mussels and the sauce was so salty that you simply couldn't eat it.
Being that we felt so let down, we mentioned this to the waitress and she went and mentioned it to the kitchen staff to "see what she could do". Apparently the kitchen staff had told her that this was just the natural seawater which had overly salted the dish and it was "meant to be like that".
Each one of us has eaten this dish at other restaurants many times and never had anything that disgusting before. It was a poor excuse for a badly cooked dish....made us wonder whether the kitchen staff thought we were stupid enough to believe the reason for it.
Most people when cooking seafood do actually wash them first and the mussels themselves Aren't that potent with sea salt! The girl wasn't apologetic. She just told us as it was and that was it......so we decided to leave there without desserts and without a tip, being that we were so disappointed by our experience!
I guess if I owned a restaurant I would make sure that everything I serve tasted nice before it was sent out and at the very least, responded to a complaint in the kitchen if someone had sent a dish back. We were there right at the beginning of the night so I would hate to think how dried out the meat would have been later on! Again, kitchen staff let the place down!
No one at our table had anything against salty food or is that precious they can't handle a bit of salt but this was just beyond a joke!
Hope you'll think twice before visiting this place. There are alot of German places around which serve so much nicer food that I'd not bother with La Boheme (unless it's only the atmosphere you're after).

What can i say! last year we dined here and food was divine, but last night visit ruined all the good memories. We were group of people and no one was happy with the food. I had roasted duck and it was dry, oily and not fresh. Never come back again!

What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon especially if you can walk home and don't have to drive.
Sunday lunch has a few different options with $25 pork roast that also includes dessert or $29.90 for something else off the mains plus dessert. The 1/4 Golden Roasted Duck was maybe a little bit dry, but that was the only real negative of the afternoon as the red cabbage and sauerkraut with it was excellent. The grilled pork knuckle was huge and got the thumbs up as did the roast pork lunch as well.
Desserts were large, Apple Strudel with walnuts and ice cream. The best way to wash all this down was with some European Ales and the drink menu is quite extensive with beers from many countries with obviously a lot of Czech ones on the list. Krusovice lager out of the tap in a .05l glass is the way to go.
Atmosphere wise this would be perfect if it was cold and wet outside and you have plenty of time on your hands to eat and drink at big wooden tables and chairs. The service was efficient and friendly and will definitely be back at some stage for dinner to try some other dishes. The artistic calendar posters on the wall of the toilet when you first walk in seem a bit out of place, but none of us were complaining.

As a Czech very keen Czech food lover, this is a must-go restaurant for me, at least once a month for the last 2 years. Charming service, pretty big servings and very authentic Czech menu has me very content. Fantastic atmosphere too, very romantic, and then of course there's the Czech beer, I know I'll offend a lot of Aussies and Belgians when I say this, but Czech beer is the best in the world!

They managed to fit us in late NYE last year which was great. The food was relatively good and very generous. The pork knuckle was more than enough. The cocktail and beer list was impressive with a great range of boutique beers and spirits to choose from.

I greatly enjoyed my meal here, it is such a lovely restaurant. The waitstaff were extra helpful as well. The beef medallion wrapped in bacon was fantastic cooked to perfection. Unfortunately, the mussels weren't quite up to standard, these things do happen and I don't think it was the kitchen at fault, but this was quickly alleviated with a replacement dish. Too bad the senior staff was a little confronting when we questioned the freshness of the seafood. If a customer tells you they think some of the mussels aren't that fresh, you don't tell them they are wrong.

This placed used to be pretty good a year or so ago but it was definitely less than average when we ate there last Friday.
The service is fine but given the price of the main meals you expect a lot more than you get. The 'golden roasted duck' was very dry and I am almost completely sure that it was deep fried NOT roasted. The sauce on both mine and my partner's meals tasted like packet sauce, not homemade which on a dish that cost close to $30 is pretty bad in my opinion. The steak tartare is completely overpowered by raw onion and tastes of nothing else.
There are plenty of places in Sydney that serve much better food at a much more reasonable price and have a better selection of beers to boot. It's sad as it is a great venue but we won't be going back anytime soon.
