Kimitaka Azuma, the man behind Azuma Kushiyaki entered the world of Japanese cuisine at a very young age. If you want to enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine, Azuma is the best place. "Simple is best" - the best way to describe Azuma's Japanese cuisine.

This is excellent Japanese cuisine and a very romantic dark atmospheric place. The Kushiyaki skewers are delicious I particularly liked the Wagyu beef tenderloin. It is an expensive, however, and, unfortunately, a singer guitarist doing pop covers did not lend itself well to an intimate Japanese restaurant.

To celebrate the lunar new year, five of us visited Kushiyaki. Daughter and her beloved had been before, and daughter is more knowledgeable about Japanese cuisine. We shared a selection of dishes, including some very good tempura. The edemame were less salty than those I have had elsewhere (a salt grinder was provided for those who like things saltier).
Service was good. Daughter suggested going to a nearby cafe for dessert and coffee, like many Asian restaurants, desserts are not a strong point.

Food was not bad but not great. Much better food elsewhere for the same price.
Staff didn't explain the ordering system ~min30 each so watch out. The staff also don't speak english well. Was a bit noisy but decor was nice.

Authentic, high quality casual Japanese dining in the CBD. The customer service is good and the ambience acceptable, but Azuma has suffered from the same problem that plagues many new restaurants; decreasing portions and increasing prices. Azuma's signature tuna salad has literally halved in size since the restaurant first opened. Their specials menu also offers less and less variety each visit. The dessert menu is also boring and has remained almost the same since the restaurant opened. It would also help if Azuma himself was a little friendlier to his customers.

A fabulous place to celebrate any occasion or just have a quiet dinner for two. The menu and food is good, the prices reasonable, the service is excellent, the staff are Japanese, and it's always a great night out. Have been back numerous times and have never been disappointed.

Warm setting, brilliant food. Superb from start to finish and a dining experience bristling with panache. Obviously a top class kitchen management has laid the foundation for this impressive operation.

This is probably best described as casual upmarket. I eat here regularly if I am around and want something decent that is not greasy take away.
I've seen Megan Gale eat a late dinner here once. I have also seen Tetsuya entertain a small group of friends here with the boss, Kimitaka Azuma, waiting on the table. So the food must be at least ok.
I normally order some kind of sushi roll or 2 for entree. Normally Spider roll and a salmon avocado roll. The Kushiyaki skewers I will always sample the wagyu and something else that takes my fancy that day like the lamb chop or chicken breast, plus a salad. If I am really hungry I will order a main, normally the Wagyu steak.
Just bear in mind the noodles here comes out of the take away noodle shop across the place and the desserts are from the patisserie, all owned by the same business.

I went here expecting amazing food. What i got was average grade food. Quite disappointed, really. My table had the Wagyu, Spatchcock karaage and Confit of duck mains, salmon and shiitake kushiyakis (skewers) and Nasu Miso.
The Wagyu was nothing special, I've had better at other Japanese restaurants, the confit of duck quite bland and tasteless. Both these dishes were very tender though. The Spatchcock karaage was quite nice, albeit reminded me of ye olde KFC.
The Kushiyakis were quite a disappointment, not only were they super small (2 pieces of small salmon and 2 pieces of shiitake mushrooms stuffed with flavourless prawns) but they were also tasteless. If you want delicious Kushiyaki, go to Mizuya across the Cinemas.
The only thing that was all round delicious was the Nasu Miso. Sadly, this dish was the size of my palm and $8 to boot. The ambience was great, nice decor with low lighting.
The service was alright until it came to the bill, which actually took 15 minutes to receive (I had to ask twice). The value was pretty expensive for the quality of food.
Overall, the experience was bad. I had high expectations and received all out average food with a high price tag.
