The food is cheap and reasonably nice but the staff….? I ordered a burger, the meat was quite dry and tasteless, the chips were great though. I could only manage a small portion of it as the meat was just too dry and it was too much of a bargain to complain, so I just left my plate half full and I felt quite full anyways.
When the waiter came to clear our plates he looked at me oddly and then went around showing all the staff members my half full plate and making odd comments right in front of me. Before I knew it felt as if the entire staff knew about it, I found this extremely rude, he could have asked if there was a reason I didn’t finish my meal instead of parading it around. I’m not easily offended but I really felt awful, I mean I was at a pub! Not some fine dining establishment where I would offend the kitchen staff for not finishing a meal.
Great pub ruined by the pretentious, unprofessional, childish staff.
I went to Kelly's for my hens party on the weekend. Was originally going to go to Colito's (I think) or Madame Fling Flongs, but Kellys was closer. I was not disappointed. Went in and had some yummy shots with my best girlfriends, and danced for a few hours. There was a band playing down near the front door which is where we were dancing and we had a great night. The band was Max Duo, they were great. Staff were so friendly,as were the clientele. Will definitely go back.
As a Newtown local I won't eat at any of the other pubs in Newtown anymore, Kellys has the highest quality food & is the best value for money. Since the pub itself took over the running of the kitchen, the changes have been significant. Even when I asked the chef if I could have a breakfast item for dinner I was met with the friendly response of 'Absolutely, I can't see why not.' The portions are much better than they used to be & the dessert menu is a lot more appealing.
As for the barstaff, I agree, the spunky English barman is fantastic, but then this pub does have a reputation for hiring good looking & exceptional British barmen. The two outdoor areas are much more pleasant than they use to be, the renovations were a great success. I agree with the other reviewer, the trivia on a Thur is a fun night out (the host makes sure everyone has a good time) & the karaoke on Fri's is also a hit. Anyone wanting a good night out in Newtown, should make Kellys their first stop!
I was in Sydney for a year which ended a couple of months ago, I spent 10 months of this in newtown and probably ten months in Kelly's as well. There's a great pub atmosphere at Kelly's which suits any visitors to newtown but still looks after its regulars. The addition of the kitchen has been a great success with some good pub grub, the chicken parmigiana is the one to go for if you ask me. The renovations have also been invaluable, there's been such a difference made to the place since they were completed. Keep up the good work guys!
I've been a regular at Kellys for years so I may be a tad biased but the recent menu change to cheaper pub grub was a brilliant idea. Although they have recently renovated and made the pub more inviting to the Newtown visiting crowd it is still a friendly locals pub where the bartenders make a point of knowing your name and the management are more than happy to hang about for a chat after a long day. I recommend a visit to Kellys for all visitors to Newtown, especially for Thursday Trivia and Friday Karaoke- brilliant!
I'm only 18 but really liked the pub. The bartenders were nice especially one rather nice looking english guy. I went there last weekend and there was a two piece band playing they were so awsome and versatile from new to old music and everything in between, they're playing again this saturday nite from 9 pm I hope to go and say hello to my nice bartender lol. The atmosphere is really good and laid back!!!!
I use to go to Kellys a few years ago but found it a bit uninviting but after hearing through the loop that they had a change of management and a renovation. I decided to give it another go. To my surprise they have the addition of a terrace area and new kitchen. The food was simple pub food at very good prices with great portion sizes that was both fresh & tasty. Good job Kellys, you will be seeing a lot more of me.
The 'stubble group' obviously run a slick operation, I had the food at the townie (they also do the food there evidently) the other night and it was awesome as for kellys, the best steak and guiness pie I've had. The kitchen staff are friendly and bar staff are great.
The irish stew I had last week was very authentic, big chunks of lamb, heaps of carrots and potatoes, simple but nice. The bbq sauce on the buffalo wings is beautiful and the hand cut chips and wedges are definite'y the best I've ever had. The renos are awesome, great deck and peaceful waterfeature...we'll definitely be back.
The food at Kelly's used to come from the cafe on the corner. Now there is an in-house bistro run by the Stubble Group, both of them, who have put together a menu featuring not one but two beef and guinness pies, not to mention Kilkenny this and Colcannon that. It sounded promising. But judging by the Irish stew they've got a long way to go. I ordered the said stew after witnessing the cook's offsider asking how to put the top half of the bun on a hamburger.
Not the time to chance steak, chips and salad. They can't go wrong with something that just needs to be bunged in the microwave. Wrong. Never in my life have I had a worse Irish stew, and I include here the canned variety, last sampled in my impoverished youth. Maybe the other offerings are better, but for my $13 I'd rather fill up on chips and peanuts at the bar.
I went here for drinks at the last footy final. The drinks were fine, with the usual selection. The new renovation has gone really well and there seems to be a much better crowd as a result. The service was fast at the bar and the prices are like most on King Street.
