How do places get away with being so downright awful? The staff are rude, the food is just passable and the coffee, go across the road for that, in fact all of it. Wake up guys, you're in Sydney, there are plenty of good cafes along Crown St. I won't be going back.
Oh my god, is this the same place we're all going to?! They have always been lovely to us, whether we come just us two adults or with all three of our kids with us. They happily oblige when we ask for specific things for our kids (extra cutlery or plates/not too hot Hot Chocolate/small drink in big glass etc. and the food is always fresh and good. Um...what's up with the rudeness? I've never seen it so I am surprised. Yes, order at the register then grab a magazine and settle in. It's nice!
Great food, beautiful fresh organic ingredients! Staff are friendly and helpful and the music is always great. The location makes for great people watching and the chicken ball sandwich and frappes are delicious! I always come here for my coffee and find the service to be spot on. If I am entertaining friends from out of town Kawa is always on the list of 'must-visit' dining experiences.
This really has to be one of Sydney's most overrated places, I've been four or fives times over the years and keep thinking "surely they can't be as rude as the last time", but they manage to outdo themselves. The food is really average, lacking thought or passion and the coffee I had was a watery muck that had a hint of coffee flavour. Give it a miss.
The service wasn't as unfriendly as some comments say. However, I walked in with a friend. They happily told us it was table service. We sat down and 20 minutes later no one had come to take our order. The waiters were all laughing at the register. So we just left and didn't say anything. I'd be interested to see what the food is like. My friend says it's incredibly overpriced.
This is the worst place in Sydney I have eaten, non existent service, terrible menu, cold restaurant and bland food that you would probably expect to get at the soup kitchen or a free food truck. Unbelievable and you could not pay me to ever go back there again.
The new dinner menu at Kawa walks the fine line between homestyle and gourmet perfectly with an excellent choice of winter fare at reasonable prices. I had a delicious smoked cod gratin with deliciously balanced, smokey flavour reminiscent of mum's tuna mornay but somehow more sophisticated. The lamb was also excellent, hearty and infused with rosemary and enhanced with the excellent side salads.
Dessert was typical of the sweet offerings expected at Kawa, home made but restaurant quality banana and caramel tart, lemon curd tart and the most sensational chocolate log (not unlike their to die for chocolate brownies). Overall a very pleasant evening.
I have visited Kawa six or seven times in the last 18 months. I was disappointed upon my first visit but felt like it had the potential to be good and maybe I had just caught them on an off day. Now, after numerous visits, I am confident that Kawa is just not a very good cafe.
The food is both underwhelming and overpriced, the coffee is unremarkable at best and the banana smoothie was more of a banana chunkyandlukewarmie. The absolute low point of each visit though has been the service. The staff generally operate between surly and snooty and aren't afraid to really take their time with everything.
I've tried hard to bring an open mind to Kawa on a number of occasions but time and time again I've found myself go home with overpriced regret.
