In the last 10 years, whenever we are on holidays in the the Blue Mountains we would come to this restaurant. The food is good and fresh but prices have gone up and the portions have been reduced. I was here again just yesterday for lunch and we had Crispy Chicken with lemon sauce, Soft shell crab and combination tofu hot pot. I would rate the soft shell crab 8.5/10, chicken 7.5/10 and the combination tofu 6.5/10. The tofu dish was nothing special.
I agree with the previous review about the rice. Boiled rice should come in a pot and they should be charging rice per person, however, this restaurant charges $2 per bowl with no free refills. That is a bit steep. Imagine if you have a table of 10 people, with 10 bowls of rice, they would have made $20 just on boiled rice alone. You can buy a 10 kg bag of uncooked rice from Woolies/Coles for $20!
They have redecorated this place since I was last there and changed a few things on the menu. It seems to be trying to be a bit more upmarket from the usual local chinese. The food is quite good still just as it always was but you can't order a bucket of rice anymore, they serve the rice in tiny bowls which seems a bit ridiculous for a chinese restaurant as there is just not enough to balance the food you have to keep asking for more.
The salt a pepper soft shell crab is yummy and so is the grandma tofu I recommend both. A good local chinese restaurant although maybe a bit expensive service is better than most though.
Have eaten there before they changed their menus. Previously it was more Chinese but recently, they are selling Malaysian food too. Prices are now expensive and when we asked the waiter about the Malaysian food, he commented that it is a fusion of Malaysian and Western. We gave that a miss and tackled the Chinese food which was only just average.
I have had take away a couple of times and it was delicious, although I had home delivery tonight and was shocked to hear at the end of the order that delivery was $10! that is on top of the minimum delivery of $30, which isn't hard to reach with the price of the dishes and I was even more surprised when I saw that they send a taxi to deliver their orders!
I was utterly disappointed when I didn't receive what I ordered. I asked for no bean sprouts in my fried rice, surprise they took no notice, even though it was written on the docket. Also received coke instead of diet coke. The food wasn't as nice as it had been the 2 previous times I have been there. I think it is time to find a new local chinese restaurant!
I have to admit though, their lemon sauce is almost drinkable it's so tasty!
It’s my favourite restaurant in Katoomba. The hot and spicy tofu is a great choice for vegetarians. The meals maybe a little bit expensive but food quality is good and so is the quick service.
Ugh, the food was absolutely mediocre, and in some cases awful. All of the food was greasy and under-seasoned. Portion sizes were tiny. The food was considerably worse than the average Sydney Chinese take-away.
Worst of all, we were chided by the waitress for not ordering enough! Right in front of my guests, she told me that we had to order a minimum of $15 per person, or we would have to leave. This policy wasn't displayed anywhere, so we didn't have a chance to consider our options beforehand. The waitress refused to include drinks (including wine and mineral water) in our "$15 per head" spend.
The low quality of this restaurant meant they really couldn't justify a minimum spend. It couldn't justify walking out of the main Katoomba area at all. I will never eat here again.
In my experience, everytime I visit Canton Palace I have no complaints, great service, tasty meals, relaxed atmosphere, not a bad experience yet and I've been there plenty of times. Probably the best place to have dinner if you're a local in the mountains, so much better than the Chinese restaurants in Sydney. The staff at Canton Palace are always polite and friendly, more than I can say for city restaurants, standout dishes are combination duck, mixed entree and mango chicken, they are delicious.
The soups are lovely but that's where it ends. Spring rolls were oily. The fried rice is not very tasty, and very small serving for the price! It is painfully obvious that they are trying to maximise profit by reducing serving sizes and very high prices!. Dessert is overpriced.
Canton Palace offers the very best chinese food in the Mountains by far (certainly the most traditional). Some of the other reviewers must have been on drugs because I have eaten chinese food all over Hong Kong and China and while there is definitely better out there, Canton Palace offers a good regional alternative. I wouldn't say it's cheap, though good value.
I think if you order (or even notice) the deep fried prawns wrapped in bacon that says more about you than the restaurant! Try the salt and pepper squid!
This place is great as a cheap and cheerful eatery, when you want a decent feed with no nonsense. The salt and pepper squid is delicious, as is the teriyaki steak with wasabi mayonnaise.
