This place had it's ups and downs when went on Sunday night. They have a very impressive range of imported beers for a reasonable price. Food is good value and pretty good. Service was very poor as the good did not come in any order, and somethings we asked for did not arrive, but they tried to include them on the bill. If that was improved they would attract much more business. The ambience gives the impression of an affordable restaurant which isn't a bad thing.
Went here last night. Food was luke warm and no spices in the curries at all. One of the dishes was paneer butter madras which consisted of a few soggy pieces of cheese and peas floating in tasteless red sauce. Disappointing.
First visit, had a beef curry (cannot remember which one) and it was delicious! Flavoursome, filling and tasty! Second visit I experienced hokkien noodles, which was different with a fried egg served on top, the noodles were a tad chewy and were drenched with a thick brown sauce, too salty which made my tongue numb! Ah! Roti was delicious both times, although I was left a bit scarred from my second visit, I will return for the curries.
Not a fan of this place, service was non-existent, and we had to sit next to another couple on one of those weird bench tables. Food was okay but didn't make up for the terrible drinks menu and bad service.
Came here one Sunday for an early lunch/brunch. There was only one other table of customers there when we arrived. Yet the service was still tremendously slow! The waiter took our order pretty quickly, but then, the wait for the food! We waited for 50 minutes for plain roti cannai ($5), nasi lemak ($10) and a chicken biryani (about $13).
We tried to make ourselves feel better by saying, "At least we know they couldn't just be microwaving the food". When the food finally arrived, we were famished. The food itself was tasty (or were we really just so hungry that anything would've tasted good?) and quite good value.
Kammadhenu is the sort of place you probably walk right past given the number of places you can get a curry in Newtown, but don’t be put off by the lack of organisation or confusion. If you’re looking for value for money and a good curry this place has both.
The non vegetarian platter $10.00 and roti was plenty for two along with rice, Goat Saag and Devilled Chicken both $15 each. The evening came to around $60.00.
The waiters are busy but courteous and fast. I would dine here again.
Great, great curries and having lived in India, I am very picky! The korma was delicate and perfectly spiced, but try not to eat with (or especially after) super strong dishes like vindaloo. Service is friendly but basic and erratic, ambience so-so. But I love the food and it's good value!
Highly recommended: Kormas, Beef Rendang, Aloo Gobi, Ginger Chicken and all dosai and roti. Ummmmmm.
This restaurant serves one of the best curries I've ever had in Sydney. The Dosai and Hoppers are of great interest. Almost all the varieties of food served here are good.
We went for dinner on a sunday night staff were quick to seat us and gave long enough to decide what we wanted as it was my first time with indian food they were very heplful in my decision making. The prawn masala dosi was yummo as was the mushroom and cheese the mango chutney was good as was the beef vindaloo and the biryani was full of flavour.
Seating was a little different but its not a big restaurant so ok for the size its byo for wine but they have beer and lots of other choices. I'd book for a friday or saturday night, the chef likes his feedback as well staff were polite overall a place I'd go back to again and again.
