A bit of a hit or miss. Food is reasonable. There are certainly better, and a lot worse, Japanese restaurants. Some menu items take an unusual approach to tradition, but it seems to work in most cases. Wine list is not extensive, however, they have a very good choice of sake, the premium sake is worth the effort itself.

Staff are attentive, helpful and knowledgeable of the food and drinks on offer.
The restaurant is austere and lacks atmosphere, however, in total it is a reasonable dining experience.

Best restaurant we have been to in Sydney after living here for nearly 2 years. Awesome service, awesome food, great decor - love the ryokan style layout. Perfect.

We were given a voucher for a 'degustation' chefs choice meal! It was fabulous, all very tasty, great combo of different classic Japanese dishes, my favourites were the tempura vegetable dish and the dessert but it was all really good.

We have visited J-Ten several times and we are continually pleased with the food and service.

The sushi and sashimi has been fresh and of good texture. We were amazed with the quality on our last visit. Some of the best we've had in Sydney. We've also tried their beef tataki, miso scallop, tempura, crisp duck, wagyu beef, miso soup, spicy tuna roll, and other items, and we have not been disappointed. The setting is cozy and pleasant. However, it can get a bit loud when it's busy.

The service has been excellent every time we've visited. We've had appropriate time between courses, friendly staff, and our water glass is kept full. I am surprised to read the negative reviews regarding service, since we feel well taken care of when we visit. The cost is quite high, but from our experience, it's worth it.

Tried this today after Kabuki Shoroku nearby was full.

Ambience is nice and simplistic. Food was quite good, however, it took 40 minutes for our food to arrive, which we were informed was due to a 'new chef being trained'. Thought it was fairly good value, $26 for the Sushi Chef Selection. Did not leave disappointed.

This is the second time we go back to this restaurant. The restaurant ambience is still wonderful, but the service is simply just horrible. Obviously, the new waiter seems to be extremely disappointed with his job, his service is very slow, when I asked for the estimated time about our wagu beef, he appeared to be very agressive and made me feel like that he did not care. I bet the management was changed, we will not come back again for sure.

The food here is definitely fresh. The service is very attentive, some dishes are hit, others are ordinary. Definitely on the $$ side. A little disappointed on the night I went, a few dishes (scampi, bonito taro dessert all of which I wanted, were "sold out" it was 6pm booking on a Tuesday and we were among 5 other tables.

Wed Nov 2.. dinner at 7:30... not even one customer in the restaurant, we have ordered 1 white fish platter, tempura seafood, wagyu beef, rainbow roll and some nigiri rolls. The hot food came before the cold food, the quality of the food is average and the waiter is quite unpleasant. I later order the slice duck and 25 minutes later, we still waiting as there is no food coming out from the kitchen. I later asked him and he talked back and said I have only ordered 10 min ago and it takes 15 minutes to cook it and you have another 5 minutes! Wow here you go again, another bad point of the service industry obviously he does not enjoy what he is doing. We will not go back to this restaurant again.

We had a wonderful experience at this restaurant last night. The service, food and ambience were all first rate.

We started with the seared garlic bonito and miso scallops, which we shared, and they were both magnificent. We then shared the large sashimi plate and were again blown away by the freshness of the fish.

This was followed by the seafood tempura (a good litmus test for a Japanese restaurant as there are so many oily and excessively battered versions out there) and the resulting dish was light and beautifully flavoured. Asparagus spears and baby corn were included in the vegetables, which made a nice change from the usual suspects, ie onion, potato and capsicum.

We then had a sushi piece each (eel and scallop) and the technical execution was spot on, not to mention the quality of the seafood. A small but well priced and selected wine list rounded out the overall wonderful experience. We will be back.
