The moment I walked in I was struck by the 1920's vintage style furnishings and overwhelmed by the beautiful art work on display which I'm told changes every few weeks. Italy? France? Israel? this place is warm and friendly and transporting, home to jazz funk lounge music and in the future I'm told a selection of cocktails and mocktails will be available which I am looking forward to attending. This is a no frills, down to earth, 'G'day mate all is welcome vibe'.
A great place for coffee and a game of backgammon or cards? The food is retro style with a large selection of burgers, big brekky's including sides : sausages, beans, tomato, bacon, eggs at an excellent price with super size servings! May I recommend the bacon and egg burger and cajun chicken burger after that big night out! There is also a large range of pasta's, vegetarian options, fresh baked pastries each day, the worlds best lasagne', soups, sandwiches and salads all of which are excellent value.
A large selection of teas is available although I won't recommend the "Lime Blossom" which the name sounds better than the taste, the coffee is a much better choice. This is the best retro style cafe in Sydney, an excellent choice of menu for those on a budget and a great place to catch some live music, smoke a cigar, sip on a wine or chat to an overseas visitor. Arrivederci!
I like this place, though it does have drawbacks. The food is not brilliant, and is a bit pricey for what it is (though not outrageously priced by any means). Sometimes the service is a bit patchy. Probably what makes it worthwhile is the friendly staff, interesting decor, interesting music, good coffee, and great location. Its a good place to get a simple meal or some coffee and toast in the morning. Its delightfully unpretentious.
I stopped here for breakfast early this morning; it seemed like a nice, friendly place and the waitress was prompt and professional, bringing my tea in double-quick time. I happily ordered the eggs florentine, thanking my lucky stars that my fave breakfast dish was on the menu. But the menu had failed to inform me that the spinach constituent of the dish was of the greyish frozen/canned variety, the muffin more like a cheap soft white roll, and that the whole kit and caboodle came on a bed of iceberg lettuce. I'm sure they do other dishes well (am I really...? Why would anyone not use fresh spinach?) and that those dishes are set at a more reasonable rate ($11+ for my fake florentine). My advice: just don't order the eggs florentine if you're a fresh-food lover.
Had a great meal, reasonable price and sensational friendly staff. The coffe and the bangers and mash were A1. Great place to read the paper and relax after a big night out clubbing.
