We very much enjoyed family dinner there. It was a great surprise to see my 2 teenage boys filled up without spending a fortune. Kaisen Don (generous amount of sashimi pieces on the rice) was the best value I've seen for a long time. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. We will definitely go back!

I recently dined here with a party of 4. We turned up late for dinner and were the only people in the restaurant at this stage and were greeted by a lovely girl.

The great thing about Jiroya is that it is BYO for wine and beer, hard to find good places that allow BYO beer. This is great for the style of dining that Japanese is. It really annoys me when people claim Japanese restaurants bring out the dishes "randomly", that is the style in which Japanese eat! And having some beers to share, with all the food on the table is great.

Anyway, on to the food, which is some of the better Japanese cuisine I have had in Sydney, and is very well priced. We ordered a large amount of food, which included the Takoyaki, which was almost as good as the Takoyaki I have eaten in Osaka. The sushi was very fresh, and all food presented well. We ordered more food than we could eat between the four of us, with the bill only coming to $120! Excellent.

The waitress was very polite and we were obviously holding up there closing time, but they made no effort to hurry us along which was good. (They closed up as soon as we left).

The restaurant itself is not the most ambient of places, but it is set out nicely and looks the part. They also had some J-Pop playing which really made me feel like I was back in Japan!

I wish the most success for Jiroya, it's obscure location may hinder it slightly, but I hope word spreads about this great little Japanese joint. I will certainly be returning many times into the future.

We Love Jiroya. The chef is passionate about his food and providing quality food here. We have been dining-in or ordering takeaway since they opened last year. We would highly recommend this small Japanese restaurant. Our favorite menu items include Seaweed Sala, Agedashi Tofu, Sushi and Sashimi Platter and Katsu Don. Their Aburi Salmon and Onion Salmon nigiri are to die for. I personally can never have enough of them. Look out for their special offer, it's really good value for money! My kids love to eat here too.

The quality of the sushi here beats most. My wife is Japanese and she rates it well above Sushi-E (in Establishment) is terms of value and quality. Note: Sushi-E does have more variety but also cost alot more. We are really fortunate to have such a high standard of sushi in Hornsby. Order scampi sushi and you may get scampi miso soup which is the real deal. Basically, its like a Japanese family restaurant where the food is placed at the centre (above ambience).

Great food. Ordered a namban chicken and tonkatsu, yum. Family friendly, was presented with colouring papers for the kids while we waited for the food. Great service and value.

Hidden away in Hornsby, it was by chance that we tried this restaurant tonight. Jiroya's nigiri sushi set with miso soup was an authentic experience and the serving portions really added up in terms of value. My partner also tried the Tonkatsu and was appropriately satisfied with both the portion size, crunchiness of the meat (I could hear it) and the additional salad which was fresh.

The service was efficient and non-intrusive, the decor inside evoked a lovely sense of 'Japanesque' with the placement of traditional umbrellas scattered over the restaurant. I really recommend this place for both locals and those outside of the area alike. I think its about time Hornsby has some good quality Japanese fare.

I've been here quite a few times already. Once at the first few nights open and half a dozen more every couple of weeks. On the first night, it was half-great half-awful. The Sushi rolls were using the wrong type of seaweed and the chicken was pink. When we pointed this out, we were told, "Oh, you don't eat like that." This made me think that in Japan, people have stomachs of steel and eat pink-chicken meat often.

Anyway, the green tea was real green tea, not the common Korean brown-rice green tea and the entrées were fine. But service was a bit lacking with meals coming out randomly and having to ask for soy sauce for the sushi rolls. With a not so nice night out, we still decided to give them a few weeks and try again, and were very surprised. They had worked out that chicken needed to be cooked and that Sushi rolls need high quality seaweed. Shockingly, we still needed to request the soy sauce.

Now, many weeks later we see this place has matured and now offers excellent quality and value for money. Food comes quickly and the staffs are polite and offer suggestions. The atmosphere is dimly lit and Japanese, with blacks on bold red. It’s tempting for me to rank poorly due to past experiences, but as they currently stand it is close to faultless. If you went there during the first few weeks, I recommend you give it another go.

If I could make some recommendations to the owners, it would be to increase their music library. While the songs are great Japanese titles, I often hear the same music when I go there.

We ate here last week and had the Sashimi and Sushi. Our food is served quickly and also the food was very delicious! This restaurant provides us real Japanese taste, it was really nice! Sashimi was very fresh and also I liked the way of decorating sashimi on a beautiful Japanese plate. And all at reasonable prices. We will definitely be going back!

Went here on Friday night. Surroundings very bland and we were initially put off by the 'cash only' sign on the front door, but a staff member came to the door and explained that they do have a machine now (so why is the sign still there? Not a good start).

Only one other table occupied in the place on a Friday night, oh well it's new and maybe they just don't have the reputation yet I thought.

Initially ordered some tea to drink (its a BYO). Once ready to order we had to ask to place our order.

Food eventually came out after quite some time, but when it did it was in an apparently random order - initially a main appeared, then an entree followed by more main etc etc.

Despite the ordering of the food, it was OK. Sashimi was fresh and well presented, but I'd steer clear of the octopus as it tasted like it had been fried in mayo!

Overall, not a great experience and value not high, but OK.

Will consider giving them a second go to see if they've ironed out the wrinkles, but not rushing back.
