What a great place for a quick, local meal. Loud and lively, food is delicious, portions a good size and the service friendly. Small and popular, so booking would be a good idea. Bottle shop right next door (in the pub), and parking from 6 pm out the front. Easy peasey!
The food was delicious, especially the fried chicken, the flavour was amazing! I was really surprised by the smell when I entered, it was a mix of spices and essential oils, it made me feel like I was in Bali!
We were super impressed with the restaurant. Even though all tables were reserved for bookings, they fit us in, on Valentine's Day. We ordered the Chef's Suggestion sampler entree and platter. The food was really delicious. Of the 4 entrees, 7 main meal selections, and 1 fruit dessert, we found it all to be cooked properly and extremely flavorful. Each time they brought out a plate of food, they explained each item. The service was quite nice. The sampler was $55 for 2 of us, which included coffee and tea.
From a vegetarian perspective the food here is fantastic and very fresh. Waiters are always friendly and attentive. Place can be cramped and noisy at times but the great food and better prices keep me coming back. A Randwick gem.
I used to work not far from this restaurant a couple of years ago ordering their takeaway lunch menu every now and again. The food is alright I suppose, not enough flavour in my humble opinion. My gripe with it this time around was the fact it wasn't served hot enough, liked they only half reheated it in a microwave from the freezer...
We came in on a Friday night with my wife and 11 month old baby, father and mother-in-law as well as my father around about 6.30 pm. A few of the tables were taken and the rest had reserved signs on them. I asked if there was any room even though I hadn't made a booking. They ushered us into the front corner because that is the only place you could park a pram in this pram unfriendly restaurant (Parents with prams take heed!)
At around 7:30 pm when the restaurant started to fill up with guests the waitstaff realised they had made a mistake by offering us a reserved table and told us to hurry up with our meal. I don't know what it's like where you come from but if you offer a table to a customer at a restaurant it is very rude to then turnaround later to tell them to hurry up and finish. If the restaurant was fully booked that night they should have turned us away in the first place instead of offering us a table.
The restaurant is extremely cramped and you cannot engage in conversation even with your neighbour without raising your voice. So much so, we decided to take the waitstaff advice and left a few of the meals behind half eaten. A friendly warning to unwary eaters, this restaurant is cash only and when you ask for an official receipt there is no GST.
Superb utterly delicious Indo food at ridiculously low prices + byo for further savings. Charming and efficient service. Room and fitout plain, but a good atmosphere from very happy foodlovers, and who cares about decor when there is such a feast to attend to.
Since first discovered and reviewed 4 years ago (mein gott!) I've been going back to Java at least weekly, and more if I can manage it. Like red wine and my Dear Wife, it just improves with age. Consistently superb food and service. Never disappoints.
I go to Java at least 3 times per week. I tried almost everything there. I suggest you try gado gado, beef rendang, Salad (I could not remember what they called it ), and Chapchai. I suggest if you go there first time you should try NasiRames so you can try different food. They also offer a lunch deal so, if you go there on Mon-Fri, you will get some discount on lunch items (11-3 pm). I think the fried chicken is a bit dry sometimes. The fish in banana leaves is pretty good but it's not very good value for money because you get like 4 small pieces. The dessert is really impressive, number 7 on the list is my favorite.
Been coming to this little place for years before it became as popular as it is now. Such good food at fantastic prices. Beef Randang and Bali Style BBQ chicken and Fish in Banana Leaves. Yummy! Oh....try the Ikan Bilis.
The best Indonesian Food in Sydney. It offers traditional as well as modern Indonesian cuisines. We tried 3 dishes: Ayam Goreng Sereh (the best), Terong Balado, Pepes Ikan. For dessert, we had Durian Ice Cream, $6 a scoop but you will not be disappointed!
Love this place! Simple decor but food is authentic and home-style. Always popular too! Portions are generous hence slightly higher prices. Try the ayam panggang and other home favourites like bean sprouts with salted fish. I enjoyed the Indonesian style jasmine tea as well; Very different from Chinese or Japanese green tea. Cash only.
