Love the food at this place. My favourite; Enchiladas Rojas. Tasty, fresh, well served plate of food for a great price. The service is friendly and quick and there is always a lovely relaxed feeling in this restaurant. Would definitely recommend.

My husband and I love this place! Service is great and the food is consistently delicious. I recommend the tequila prawns and nachos. Not to miss.

We went on recommendation and were really disappointed. The flavours in the beans in our nachos were seriously lacking, the dishes inadequately seasoned and the portions meager for the price. The vegetarian 'tofu and vegetable' fajitas offered no vegetables, just undercooked tofu and there was no salad or the extras one would normally get with fajita at that price. We had to pay $4 a pop for a tiny dish of jalapeños and sour cream!

All in all the meal was overpriced, bland and not worth our time. Go somewhere else. Much better Mexican, much better value and far more vego options.

My wife and I regulars to Izote and can't understand some of the comments here.
The food is consistently great and the atmosphere is like eating in your own house. The quesadillas are amazing with the chilli sauce an amazing addition.
Highly recommended!

We tried this place on a Sunday night. Reasonable ambience with a scattering of tables down the length of the establishment. We were just looking for a light meal and this became problematic because the waitress pointed out that a minimum $20pp charge applied. In the end we ordered a tostada basket and nachos and drinks which almost made up the minimum charge. Reasonable food but at inflated prices.

Wow, nice food but very pushy kitchen staff and senior staff, and if you have 8 people you need to get the banquet and after the entress you are full so there is no point in getting that and paying excessive amount of money for nothing! I suggest if there is a party of 8 or more, try to sit near each other as the tables are close by and this is the only way we got away with our xmas party of 15 people.

There are other mexican places in newtown and I would give them a try but I can't deal with the rudeness of the senior staff and the senior staff's relative who only stands at the till and take money of patrons, she does nothing else and I over head her telling off a waitress because she did not push entree dishes to a table of a very young couple who looked like Sydney uni students and were not the entree types!

Poor staff got told off by the lady at the till! Keep an eye out for her, it is quite entertaining actually! Oh and the kitchen staff tells people he is from Chile not mexico!

Enjoyed Izote, however a few things need to be noted. It's BYO so no margaritas, tequila or Mexican beers here. The starters are expensive! We ordered a guacamole dip at $11 which came with a tiny bowl of corn chips. Anyway, an extra 'bowl' of corn chips to help finish the dip cost $4! A bit ridiculous, a starter of 'chip and dip' for $15! Also some refried beans would help the enchiladas, all of this is considered pretty standard for Mexican food and shouldn't be considered extra. The food was enjoyable, salad crisp and service friendly. I just feel that if these issues were addressed Izote would be considered overall a much better restaurant.

Sadness of an intolerable kitchen staff unable to take feedback. Ordered Enchillada and two starters, however, fish was undercooked which we decided to return to the kitchen. Wish this didn't happen since the kitchen staff came out and basically intimidated us with his bully tactics that we had no clue of how the food should taste like following his 40 years of cooking.

In addition, after we asked for the bill, it included the returned dish, so pointing out to have this removed caused yet again a challenging and intimating manner from the kitchen staff. So, in short, unless you're happy to eat and say nothing, this place is ok'sh, if you love food and may decide to have feedback, this place is shockers!

The kitchen staff's inability to receive feedback and to counter this with bully/intimidation will eventually pay the price, if not today, tomorrow, sometime in the future, good luck Izote! All of my latin community will be advised on your fantastic customer service!

Thank God there are other restaurants like Barrio Chino, G&G (cafe), and Azteca's!

Visited this restaurant with a party of 4. Food was delicious and well presented (and quite plentiful). Menu offered a good mix of usual Mexi fare (burritos, enchiladas, fajitas) plus some more classic dishes such as Mole Poblano. Couldn't go past the Mole which was excellent - great balance of flavours which on paper shouldnt work but they just do and do it well in this dish. Service was good, venue seemed well staffed so no problem flagging down help. Food was at the table within a short amount of time. And the ambience was cosy but lively as the venue is only small but nicely decorated with cool latin music piped throughout. Overall a very good experience!
