Well, I went there last sunday night with 2 of my friends to have dinner. They didn't want to organize a table for three and was trying to move us outside which we said no. Then with an angry face he put us next to the sliding door which I had to close it every 5 second, then the other waitress got angry with me and told me "leave it open as I have to go out".
Didn't look after us, served our bottle of wine with food. My point is if you don't like people well don't do this job. Grumpy face and being rude? I just can say it was an awful night and do not recomend this place.
Great little Italian joint in Bondi. Not down the flash end of Bondi, so it isn't a tourist trap charging high prices for bad food and service. On the contrary, the food is great, and excellent value, ambience is okay but a little poky. Service is fine but not distinctive. I'd be happy as a regular here.
The pasta here is great. Service can be a little slow when they're busy but it's not bad. Nice relaxed atmosphere and like I said, the pasta is really good - and it comes in small or large. The small is more than enough if you include a starter. BYO too. Good spot - and the waitress Erin is really friendly. Highly recommended.
Yes, you may not get 5 star service but at The Italian you get good down homestyle cooking. At the right price, we eat there once a week because quite frankly we love the food and the people. Be realistic people, this is a local casual restaurant.
I am dismayed to discover the following negative reviews for this restaurant as a regular diner I find them difficult to accept. I cannot assume the experiences of others; I can only describe my own. My work involves regular interstate trips to Sydney. On the recommendation of a fellow colleague, I decided to try this restaurant and have made a point of eating there at least, once per trip ever since.
I have yet to be disappointed by any of my chosen meals, both enjoyable and authentic. In fact the arancini are better than any I ate in Sicily, the pizzas are made with the traditional thin base and fresh toppings and the gnocci are equal to and better than most I have eaten (including Italy). The ingredients fresh, the menu extensive and the atmosphere unpretentious and relaxed, the portions are generous.
If the reviewer had read the menu, he/she would have seen that there are two meatball dishes available. As a pasta dish or as a traditional dish of meatballs and napoli sauce. I have eaten and enjoyed both. There is no doubt that bad service can effect an evening’s enjoyment and rudeness is unacceptable. However, in cases such as these a diner can and should return an unordered or incorrect dish and have it replaced.
In addition, as any experienced diner and this very web site will advise, you must in all fairness, inform the Owner. After all, this is his/her livelihood and reputation, and for that reason, an Owner is unlikely to allow the type of rudeness expressed to go unchecked.
I have never been treated so rude and talked to so condescendingly by anyone in hospo as I was by the blonde maitre d' who had been mentioned many times in these reviews. I have a worked myself in hospo for many years and know that some people can be awful customers to deal with, but we simply quizzed the price of a side of spaghetti (plain and about half a cup) that we were charged $14 for. The issue was not only the price, a lovely waitress who was I guess, Italian didn't speak great English took my order; I had asked for her opinion on two dishes and then said, do you know what? I feel like pasta, so I will get the meatballs.
When my dish came out as just the meatballs no spaghetti, it was then that I was told that particular dish didn’t come with pasta? I then ordered a side of spaghetti, with no complaints! But thought it is a bit strange that no one mentioned that when I said that I felt like pasta. My meatballs were lovely, but my friends both said theirs were very average. When we questioned the price of plain spaghetti, she then accused me of being a typical Australian that we talk too fast for the foreign waiters (she herself was Australian) hmmm no I don't?? I said to her that she should know that to work in hospo that even if she is not going to accommodate our complaint, to at least me sincere and maybe a little bit sorry that we are unhappy! Instead she sarcastically said 'she wasn’t really bothered what we thought' 'plenty of other people like this place so we are not really fussed if you come back' Nice!!
Being a Bondi local and eat out at least 3-5 times a week, I will not hesitate to pass this story onto anyone who will hear it. If you want good Italian in Bondi, Glebisons is great service food and cheap, but if you want to spend $35 bucks on a main (that was the cost of mine in the end). Go to North Bondi Italian, line up and wait a long time for a table, but it’s superb and the staff are professionals!!
If Italian means rude then this restaurant has succeeded. This is not the 1st time I have gone to this place because all the other places around were packed, but it will be my last. The food is nothing special at all, the garlic bread tastes like burnt newspaper and the service is atrocious. There was a particularly nasty waitress. I have never at any restaurant been treated so badly. She is rude and unpleasant regardless of how polite you are to her. She made our experience worse than it had to be as we left the restaurant still hungry from the tiny portions of food.
I like this restaurant. It's nothing flash but the food is good basic Italian and they don't charge through the nose. A great mid week choice with some good Italian wines on the list.
Reading through some of the reviews below I have to say the service can sometimes be gruff, but always accommodating. And they actually are Italian, as opposed to a lot if Italian restaurants owned or run by non-Italians. Good value for money.
We've eaten here twice over the last month. The first time the food and ambience were great but service was not so. Even so, we decided to go back for my husband's birthday. Our second meal there was great, but ruined by the awful service. Like the other reviewer, I was treated very rudely on the phone when making the booking. Our night was spoiled by the terribly rude blonde waitress (the other waitresses were ok). We won't go back solely because of the disgusting service.
I wish I could agree with the below reviews. I tried it out with a group of 9 of us based on the feedback on this site and I was disappointed. The lady who took my booking over the phone was terribly rude which should have been a warning, but sadly we decided to go anyway.
My husband had the lazagne which admittedly was fantastic, but the rest of the meals were at best so-so, and the service was rushed and abrupt. One of our orders had to be sent back (ok, it was a busy night, these things happen) and generally the evening was less than what I was hoping for. Sorry, wouldn't go back.
