Good value for money. $5.50 for Haiyanese Chicken (half a chicken)! Rice was an extra $6.50 (for 2 people), which was a little steep considering it was more expensive than the chicken itself. Still good value when you consider other places charge a lot more.
The restaurant seemed well decorated. The seating was a little awkward, as the tables were pretty close to each other. Service wasn't too bad. The waitress that looked after us was new and seemed unfamiliar with the menu. However, the manager was on hand to help us out with any queries she couldn't handle.
Food came out quick but in the wrong order. Our mains came out before our entrees which was somewhat of a surprise, but again, we just assumed this was because of the new waitress. Unfortunately, our rice intially came out cold but the problem was quickly rectified after we asked the manager if this was normal.
Overall, the food was tasty and not too bad for value. Let's see if the service can improve.
We ordered the curry chicken and rice. That was pretty average. We also ordered the Mee Goreng and I have to say that it was the worst meal I have ever eaten. The noodles were burnt and tasted very bitter. We told the waitress and she took back the food and we got another mee goreng which was marginally better.
I have to say that we were very disappointed and would not be returning there again!!!.
Went to the place twice hoping it will be better the next time around but I was wrong. It just convinced me not to go back there again. The food was average. The soup... oh, I must tell you, they served the worst soup I've ever tasted in a restaurant. It was basically just water used to boil a piece of corn and a piece of carrot! It was just distasteful!
Food was ok. Taste was average for what you would expect for Malaysian restaurant. The service was slow and some items didn't arrive until we asked again.
Overall the food was relatively expensive and the menu's were quite confusing since all of us received the same menu with different prices. The laksa was not too bad and the curry puff (entree) is worth trying.
Our 1st time here, I had fish head noodle and my wife had mee siam. We thought that the fish head noodle was better, still meaty even though its the head!, service is average and ambience is ok, tables are too close together. Price is a little pricey.
Came here for the 2nd time in December 2007 because on the first visit their chili mud crab was yummy. Will not visit this place ever again. Service, shocking, short staffed, and all 3 staff are incompetent. The wait for every dish is loooong. Waiters had to be reminded over and over again for drinks, dishes and desserts. One waitress would do one thing, get side tracked, get sidetracked again...basically she never got anything done but she sure fooled the senior staff by running around lots.
The senior staff is a huge turn off in terms of his stern expression and haughtiness. In a tiny restaurant I find it annoying that he has to parade up and down repeatedly, even more insulting is him snobbing our concern why the jug of coke still hasn't arrived half way through our meal.
Value, By the way, be warned that a jug of coke is >$15 - that's right, works out to be >$5 per person. They charged us $260 just for the 2 crabs that were tiny, later we figured we got ripped off.
Food, Sure the chili crab is nice, but not worth visiting this dishonest, crowded (lots of furniture but not many people), understaffed place.
Ambience, Hot (no air conditioning), crowded (tables right next to one another), and lame that the senior staff has to prance around all night without contributing to any work.
Overall, this place is a rip off (e.g. $18 for a small portion of microwave reheated chicken curry that is all dried up and tasteless), the service is ridiculously poor and slow, and dishonest (overpricing so check your bill carefully, and takes 15 minutes for change to be returned. They must be insane to think that I would tip them over $25). Istana Malaysian is disappointing in all aspects!
We enjoyed a Xmas Eve meal with my partner (Mon night). We were one of the first to arrive for the evening, so service was very attentive. I must say the bar area is very cute. We had a booking but since it was quiet, they seated us on a larger table. It was fortunate, because we ordered a lot of food. Like most Chinese restaurants, they serve you complimentary entree soup, but don't drink too much, it'll make you thirsty.
We decided on the Istana prawns ($30), Malaysian Chilli Mud Crab about 1 kg ($24.80 per pound), Mee Goreng ($16) and Roti. We were surprised the mee goreng was large enough to feed 2 people itself, a bit too spicy for me but still very authentic. The prawns were in a flakey batter but did not have an oily aftertaste. Next to arrive was the main star, the Malay Chilli Mud crab, very juicy flesh and nice sauce (mild chilli).
Use the roti bread to mop up the sauce afterwards. Obviously you will need to get your hands dirty for the mud crab, however, it will make you want to lick your fingers when you finish. The waiter will show you the size of the crab before the meal. So if you want a larger or smaller size, you can voice your choice before cooking. We finished all the crab and prawns, but we were stuffed and just couldn't finish the mee goreng (ended up takeaway).
A very satisfying meal. All up it cost $120 for 2 people (could've fed 2 more people), but if we didn't order the crab it would've been half that amount. The only sour note for the night was the fruit plate, only contained 2 tiny pieces of orange and 2 tiny pieces of watermelon. It looked bad to give us the small amount, they might as well have given us no fruit plate. To sum up, great Malay/Singapore food would recommend the mud crab (great value) at $55 per kg if you don't mind the price tag. Will definitely be back again for other items on the menu.
I am a Singaporean and I enjoy cooking and eating good food. When it comes to food I am very particular with the freshness and the taste of the food. I highly recommend the Hainanese Chicken Rice in this stall rather than Temaska (cause I have tried both of them). The Chicken Rice comes with dark sweet soya sauce when ask and the Chilli sauce is just so authentic. The rice fragrant just smell right through your nose when serve and the chicken taste sweet because of the freshness. I travel 1 hour away from where I live to eat the Chicken Rice so.. what do you think?
We will have lunch there if we craved for Hainanese chicken. They have promotional lunch special at $5.50 for 1/2 chicken. And the mee goreng was pretty authentic. Wouldn't recommend other dishes as they are pretty average. One thing that bugs us is the cashier will round up the bill and take the change as tips although the service wasn't that great.
Food was average and a little overpriced, I can't compare to some of the food courts with the same food in the city so I would rather go there to eat than here, but my friend do like coming here.
