I've been this family restaurant for few years. Before, every time I came here with my family. We like the food there, like Hainanese chic, chilli crab, kangkong. These are the main reasons we come. This time we were here (week day), the restaurant was quiet, service, however, was excellent, it was much much more better than before (few months before). Atmosphere was much relaxing and comfortable. It seems that they have new management (not sure). Anyway, the whole experience was good and enjoyable.
The food here is typical Malaysian Chinese food. The mud crab here is great. I would also recommend the Hainan Chicken. This place is very busy on Saturdays - even if you book, you often have to wait. The tables are packed so closely together you feel like you are navigating a maze to go to the bathrooms.
I have been to Istana 12-13 years now. From the days when we were the only patrons there and there were 3-4 staff serving one table to the now busy restaurants. This is a very family oriented place. The food have been the same over the years, which is not a bad thing.
THE CHILLI MUD CRAB is probably the only reason we keep going back every few months. I have now moved to the CBD and still travel all the way back there to have family dinners.
Most of the dishes are very good and tasty. There are a few flaws here and there, such as the free soup which is tasteless and needs alot of salt. BUT in saying that it is free. I would recommend this family restaurant to friends and family.
I have been here several times and usually for our family get together, really good authentic Malaysian food, service is good and ambience is always family like. Highly recommended.
If you are going to this restaraunt and love chilly mud crab make sure you order a few days in advance when you make your booking. This dish is to die for here. Yum. There are quite a few authentic Malaysian dishes with other dishes to suit the European market. Service and ambience are quite Malaysian in culture so based on that pretty good.
Been here a few times but the chicken rice (this time) was too 'wet'/ too much water/ soggy/. Prices are getting higher but the main dishes are just average sizes. The staff are inefficient/ slow service..
Chicken rice was good. War Tan Ho (egg noodle with pork prawn and vege) was big. Price looked steep at first, but reasonable when taking into account the size of the dish. Service is not great. The first waiter was reasonable but some of the others need to be taught how to do proper waitering. One waitress took away a dish without asking us.
On a previous occasion, one of the older waiter (who was also there but thankfully not our waiter) was just plain rude. But we're not there for the waitering, just the food that we like. And they do cook pretty fast so you get out quick.
