Outstanding food and service, I must say that this was my first Indian experience but will surely not be my last. I have not experienced such attentive restaurant service in a while and the calming ambience was a great compliment. Well done!
Horrible service. There were four of us in our group. We asked for our orders to be taken twice but we were totally ignored. Eventually, after 30 minutes we had our orders taken. No wine glasses on the table and we had to request serviettes before we literally snatched from around the waiters forearm. Obtaining an ice bucket was akin to extracting teeth (a long painful wait). We won't be back.
Great food. We decided to skip the entrees and go straight for the mains. I was dining with a vegetarian, so we shared 3 vegetarian dishes from the fairly impressive vegetarian page (at least 9 or more dishes, all of which sounded good). We originally ordered 4 dishes plus a delicious lemon-rice (as we're both large eaters), but they suggested that would be too much, so we got 3.
They were all delicious, had to stop ourselves from licking the bowls clean! Unfortunately, I can't remember the names of the dishes, but one was the Okra (surprisingly good, and not slimy), another was the vegetarian croquettes with tomato and cashew sauce, and the other was a potato and cauliflower dish. Each dish was around the $15 mark, which is fairly standard.
Since it wasn't quite enough for us, we both got the Gulab Jamun, which was the best I've ever had, and was sorely tempted to get another. Mid June, and without the gas heaters on we were able to sit outside on the footpath, which was quite nice except for the occasional loud bus and smokers walking by.
They had a reasonably long wine list, but we were both driving so stuck to the non-alcoholic stuff, of which their list is fairly stock standard, fizzies, bottled juice, lassi.
I'm not from the area, but I think I'll be making a point to go back. They also have a function room for up to 120 people, which my dining partner commented he might have to utilise for a work function some day!
Food was terrific, prawn mustard curry really was superb. Indian can tend to get a tad (or allot, depending on the restaurant) oily, but not here, really well balanced authentic food. BYO is always a bonus, service was terrific on quite a busy night.
Found it a touch irritating that we'd made a booking, mentioning a special anniversary, however, this was clearly not recorded, checked off on arrival or a table reserved. We were offered the last remaining free and least desirable seating in the thoroughfare of the centre floor. Didn't spoil it for us though, the food more than compensated!
I went here after reading the reviews on this site, and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. I gave it 6 for ambience only because we were seated near the door, the restaurant was packed and it was very busy, but the meals were fantastic, the waiters were rushed of their feet but still did a great job. Will definitely go back!
We are not locals in Balmain, but if we were this would be my new favorite place to eat that's if you can get a seat, it was very busy.. Outstanding curries, the masala dosai was exceptional. Anytime we decide on curry, this will be my choice.
Excellent service. We are not local. Somebody recommended. Waiters are well mannered with very nice sense of humour and with modern get up, which is very rare to find in an indian restaurant. When I told them that was my first time they look after me the way nobody does. Normally in this situation people wants you to rippoff. But here the waiters tell us that we are ordering too much, which is really nice of them.
And you know what we ordered too much. What can we do all yummy. They pack the rest over very nicely. Most of the place where I visited waiters are bit rude. But here EXCELLENT, don't forgot to sit in the balcony.WONDERFULLLLLLL.
Has become and will remain our local!. Superb Dosai, and all meals are excellent. When we invite friends to Balmain, they all want to come here again. Service fun and friendly.
