Food here is quite good. Brekky is the same as all the rest of the cafes around this area. The tapas while drinking your cocktails is my favourite. I like to start my night here hanging off the bar eating lots of little plates before venturing into the packed bars down the road.
I wish I could go back in time to my Saturday morning ritual at In Situ, before the place was "renovated". The service was never anything much, but the food was great. However these days the poor decor choices seem to leave the staff without a care for service and the kitchen desperate to get you to leave. The last time we went was the final straw with missing meals, cold food made up of substituted ingredients.
I have to say that I've been going to In Situ for years for coffee, dinner, cocktails, meetings, you name it. The decor is fantastic, the outdoor area spacious, and the musicians they have in really bring the place to life after dark. However, over the last couple of months I have to say the service has declined rapidly. The waiters seem to not really give a damn, forget orders, food coming before drinks, orders completely wrong and having to be sent back.
I've worked in hospitality for years and I understand busy periods and having to wait that bit longer. But what I'm talking about has nothing to do with busy times, I'm not exaggerating, the Worst service I have ever encountered. It's such a shame because it used to be a consistently great place to go and now we won't be back.
Great for coffee and drinks but I wouldn't recommend the food. I've had toasted raisin bread and sandwiches that were quite burnt and tasteless. Service is nothing to write home about in my experience. Nice ambience but the food is a bit pricey, you can find better for less nearby. I do recommend it for cocktails in the evening.
I have been to In situ quite a few times during the day for coffee/tea which have been excellent experiences. It's a beautiful, relaxed place to have a coffee, however, I have never had the food. I also went the other night for cocktails which was quite expensive, about $14.50, but excellent! Try the apple crumble!! The wait staff are attentive, helpful and very friendly.
We are easygoing, relaxed people, but my husband, son and I found our dining experience at In Situ on a Saturday lunchtime to be the worst we've had in Manly, mainly because of the incredibly rude, chaotic service from three of the four waiters we encountered. And definitely not a place to take a small child, no matter how well behaved.
I agree - anyone giving this place such a negative review must be a bit uptight - I've always found the staff professional and friendly and willing to accommodate requests. The cocktails are great, the tapas is good, and the ambience when there's a band playing is relaxed and casual.
Best coffee in Manly, and one of the best in all of Sydney. Killer breakfasts and lunch as well. Warm, loungy feel at night, breezy cafe during the day.
The negative reviewers sound a bit uptight. Like any cafe, you should have some patience during a busy period. They do a quick turnover so service is very good.
The place has style (nice decor). It has substance (great food). It has ambience (transforms from breezy cafe during the day to classy lounge with music at night). It has value (coffee and breakfast for around $15 - great for Manly).
Like other reviews listed on this restaurant. I was there with a group of up to 10 (pre-booked) mostly all with hospitality experience, and we all found the service absolutely miserable & completely rude.
We were told we could not order at the bar (& pay as we go), advised that we had to order with our waitress & put the drinks on our credit card (held at the bar). When the waitress forgot our orders & we went to the bar to chase them up, she rudely told us to go back to our table & wait. While the ambience & music was great, the wait staff should be fired on the spot !
