After nagging my boyfriend for months to try Impassion, I ended up being sorry that he finally gave in!
We started with bread and dips (the dips were hummus, bruschetta mix and a 'spicy tomato' dip). The bread was lovely and warm but the dips were all bland as could be. They needed more seasoning and spices to jazz it up. Even the 'spicy tomato' dip was nondescript and definitely not spicy to my taste buds.
On to mains. I ordered the chicken and my boyfriend had the lamb shanks. Again, very ordinary and boring, not well seasoned, lacking flavour, and on the whole disappointing. For the prices we paid for the mains (about $30 each) I would have expected something much more exciting. This was just plain and boring. Even the asparagus spears which came with my chicken weren't right, the woody ends had not been removed and it was not a nice texture! I could have cooked better myself at home.
For dessert, I had the apple and rhubarb crumble, and my boyfriend had the crepes with rocky road ice cream. My crumble was nice (although not very warm - it had obviously been reheated) but my boyfriend's crepes were stone cold and rubbery, obviously precooked and not even reheated!
Overall the ambience was nice and the service was efficient and friendly, but the bland food and expensive prices mean we will not be returning.
A group of my girlfriends and I visited not long after they opened so may they hadn't ironed out all the creases. We went one afternoon to have coffee and cake. We ordered a series of coffees, skim, soy, teas. After waiting for 20 mins we were told they had no soy. 10 mins later we were told they had no peppermint tea either.
We then ordered our cakes and a cheese plate. 20 mins later I received a friand, it looked and tasted like a frozen Sara Lee muffin zapped in the microwave. The cheese plate never arrive because they had no cheese?? The table were all setup in lines like a school room, no ambience what so ever. Overall a very disappointing visit and have never been back.
While I lived in the Camden/ Narrellan area in 2006/2007, I happened upon Impassion, which quickly became my favourite restaurant in the area (if not all the areas aside from the city!) I have always had quick service and absolutely divine meals - the head chef must be running a very tight, well drilled team.
I noticed that a few people have mentioned the food portions bordered on Nouvelle cuisine, but I don't see it. After all, real restaurants aim to fed you - not fatten you. (not mentioning names of such terrible restaurants in the Camden area) I haven't found food of the same quality since moving to QLD late last year but that's not for lack of trying!
I'm happy to go back to Impassion on every visit back to Camden, and I can't wait for my next one! Well done to all the team and good Luck educating the Macarthur area on good food!
We had an amazingly poor experience here at Impassion. Items not available on menu, dittery staff, tiny portions, seafood undercooked. For the prices we expected a lot more than they delivered. Would rather go somewhere else that be humiliated by their matre d'.
We have been to Impassion on many occasions and have thoroughly enjoyed every visit. Food is always great and staff are friendly and helpful. We love sitting on the balcony and on our last visit they had a band playing which made for a fantastic night. Would recommend to anyone.
Just didn't live up to my expectations. Everyone I have spoken to has said the same, food ok, service not great. 30 minutes for our drinks to arrive before our meal? Different wait person each time someone came to our table, no communication, did not know we had ordered.
My friend I went to Impassion to celebrate her birthday with a Champagne High Tea. It was luscious. The visual of it was amazing, a 3 tier extravaganza. The WA sparkling was stunning. We then had three types of sandwiches, the one with chicken, celery and pine nuts was amazing. We had plain and pumpkin scones which were so fresh and tasty, jam and cream.
4 types of cakes, including a rich chocolate brownie, caramel tart (I don't normally like caramel but this one was buttery and gorgeous), pink sponge cupcake (icing a bit too sweet for me, but my friend loved it) and a strawberry/marscapone roulade topped with a tiny meringue (the roulade was amazing). When we were there on Sunday there was a jazz band playing so the ambience was fantastic sitting on the verandah on a drizzly day listening to jazz! Oh and the tea was good too!
As others have said, the serving sizes at Impassion lean towards Nouvelle cuisine, so this wouldn’t be my first port of call after a hard days toil, however, if you’re looking for a laid back evening with your better half, or a small group, then this would be a pretty good place to go, you can also BYO wine here. Sitting on the balcony gives you a good view of Argyle St, and also the sunset if you’re into that sort of thing, you will also be entertained by the punters entering the pub opposite.
We started with the bread and tapenade to share which was very tasty. I had salt and pepper squid for entrée, also v.good. For mains my wife had the wagyu beef, she said it was one of the best steaks she’s ever tasted, which is a big call since I’m no slouch in the kitchen, and she’s a damn fussy eater! I had the Morrocan lamb with roast pumpkin, rocket and walnuts which was also delicious, but a little on the small side for me, my wife’s steak was a more generous portion.
Dessert was a perfectly made crème brulee, I have sampled some pretty tragic brulee’s in my time, so to receive one that didn’t resemble lumpy custard made me a little misty eyed, after all, it really isn’t that difficult to make! Service was a little slow at the start, drinks took a while, but the margarita my wife ordered was not the usual 7-11 slurpee mix you get at some places, so no need to spit the dummy and complain.
The service did pick up though, and remained consistent throughout the night, friendly staff that give you the time of day and make the experience a very pleasant one. You’ll more than likely need three courses to fill up, if you know this to begin with you won’t balk at the price/quantity ratio, and instead enjoy some fine food in great surroundings.
Wonderful food and a great restaurant, we brought our own cake but were charged $3.50 cakeage which we understood as we were given great service and good ice cream to complement our cake. The desserts we saw going out looked great so next time we will have one of those.
Beware if you are a large group, 2 items out of 8 on the menu were not available and were only told this 20 minutes after we had placed our orders. 1 and 1/2 hours later our meals arrived, drink service was extremely poor, waiting for 30 minutes for drinks that were ordered on arrival. Mains portions were entree sized meals although the quality of the small portion was good, just don't go here hungry expecting to be full after your meal.
We attended for a birthday party and were told on the night that there was a $3.50 cake cutting charge per person. A little over the top made a $35 birthday cake a $91 cake. Would never return, very disappointed.
