Cheap, simple and friendly service make this little place an easy option when you can't be bothered to cook. Sticks to the pasta dishes and you're on a winner.
Food is better than okay. I say this because the vegetables I was served with my very nice veal were past their sell by date. I know they are not the main part of the dish - but I still expect them to be fresh.
Pasta is good, Gnocchi is good. Lasagne could be better, it's too creamy.
Nice little place - and very friendly.
We often go here for a nice midweek meal - the food is consistently tasty, the service is prompt and friendly, and the prices are realistic, although I wouldn't recommend it if you're after somewhere fancy to take a romantic date - it's just good, reliable food.
This place does nice, cheap Italian but suffers from a few key drawbacks. One, it's tiny and hence the no ambience. Two, the toilets (and the long passage to get there) are revolting, and I'm not easily shocked. Three, the aircon is quite dodgy so its often too hot. Probably best for takeaway.
This is a small but wonderful restaurant! Many of the poor reveiws of Il Gondoliere are ridiculous. The food is spectacular and simple, especially the bruscetta which is the best I have ever had. This is a family run business that holds about 20-25 people to expect to take up a table for 3 hours while the business looses money and turns away their regulars is unreasonable to expect. This is my favourite Italian restaurant and everyone I take there and there are many agree. P.s Tommy is the man!
I've been here twice, the most recent occasion was as a couple for my wife's birthday on a thursday evening. For that dinner we both had a pasta meal for mains and bruscetta and garlic bread to start. We both enjoyed our meals which were generously portioned and prepared in just the right amount of time (not too soon or too late...) The service was casual but sufficient and kind of suits the atmosphere of the restaurant. The atmosphere itself was pleasant and relaxed. All tables were busy (it's fairly small) - we had to wait 5 mintues to get a table at 8pm.
Overall, Il Gondoliere is definitely worth a visit.
This place is located in a side street at the top end of the Manly Corso (near Wharf end). It's quite a cosy venue, but can be very busy and noisy. As the venue is small, it is not hard to catch the attention of the waiters. The food was ok for Italian.
We really enjoy this restaurant, we find it difficult to walk past with the delicimo aromas coming from the kitchen, we took our 12 year old grand daughter there for dinner and she loved it. I don't know what exactly it is about this place but even though it is a tight sqeeze you are never bothered by it, you just get lost in it,(in a nice way) I recommend it even if it is for it's simplicity.
Shocking. Really, really shocking. We had friends staying and we took them to this place and it was just embarrassing. The politest words I can use for the food are "well below average" and "totally overpriced" . As for the service, words almost fail me. As our main course plates were removed we were told we could pay the bill at the front counter. When we pointed out that we would like to see the dessert menu and order coffees, we were told that someone else was waiting for our table. Disgusting. Just awful. It is a really bad way to do business. I love supporting local businesses in Manly but I totally disagree that we all like to be in and out of a restaurant - some of us like to have more than 45 minutes at our table! Definitely will not be going back and will be recommending that friends give it a miss too.
