After reading good reviews of this restaurant on this site, a group of friends and I decided to try this place out. The pizza was fine, by no means the best going around, but still ok. The pasta dishes our group tried were disappointing, so probably best to go with pizza instead.
The ambience is nothing special, as other reviewers have mentioned. However, it does have a homely feel to it, which I rather liked. The staff were friendly, but forgot to bring one of the pizzas (it arrived 1.5 hrs after ordering), and weren't particularly great about it, it would have been nice if they'd apologised! Although the pizzas are pretty good value, the pasta dishes were fairly average priced. We were also charged $15 for a salad consisting primarily of lettuce and tomatoes, very overpriced!
This restaurant could be a decent local to go to for a pizza, but I feel there are better options in the area.
Really don't know what people think to give this restaurant such good reviews on the food. The place is not pretty but that does not bother me so much when I just want to have good food. But the food is not really good, it is normal pizza, not many choices, actually more Australian variety than Italian.
We had two pasta dishes which were both not good - tastless. The other 3 pizza looked the same, still weren't. We had to wait 90 mins for the last one. They did not bring the food together. We were also charged 15$ for a sad looking salad to share (iceberg, tomato, cucumber and some olives). All in all really disappointing after reading all the reviews. Definitely will not go again!
Went here with a small group of friends based on the reviews here. The place was a little disappointing to look out from the outside, and not much better on the inside. It could use a lick of paint and some more lights, quite dingy and looks like it hasn't been renovated since 1977.
This aside the food was quite good, my friends adored the pizza and the Bolognese was ok, I do have very high standards though! For a cheap old school type meal though, this place is hard to beat!
If you want to feel like you have stepped straight into an Italian family's kitchen then this is the place to go. The BEST veal dishes I have tried anywhere. It can get a little crowded but that adds to the charm. The service is always quick and the food just superb!
Family owned and family run. It's so great. Everything is great. From the entree garlic pizza to the mains to the desserts. I've been here so many times. Introduced through a friends birthday party. The last visit was a night out with the girls. We ended up in leichardt. we went to Il Cugino but it was full. They told us to return in 20 minutes. We walked up and down all of norton st seriously, and just wanted to go to Il Cugino.
Staff are extremely friendly and sociable. Portions are great. Normally if you go in a group of 3 one pizza and one pasta really fills you up. It is cash only but it's so affordable, it's the best italian you can get. (I've been to Italy too, the food wasn't as great, maybe I expected too much, but OH MY GOODNESS Il Cugino is totally great) it's not a flashy arty place, but it's very homy. It's the best place to go with close friends and chill out. Even on a date it's perfect. The food is top notch. The park nearby is top notch. Bar italia is always great too.
When I lived in Sydney I used to eat here all the time. Now that I'm in the US I really miss the pizza here. It was so good. If they could only pack it in dry ice and air mail it.
Now this is the best pizza, old traditional way - mama works there, papa in the kitchen and Charlie and Antonella (the children) make up the family. I swear I eat there two times a week - portofino a week, castelmolat a week but this is where I have my pizza and occasionally the veal ruccuola or the garlic prawns are a must. The only awful thing is cash only (no C/C OR EFTPOS).
Love this place! Best traditional pizza that I've found which was not too oily as most are. None of that fancy gourmet stuff here, just good old Italian-Australian pizza. Try the pepperoni!
As for the atmosphere, don't expect anything too flash. It's fairly bright and bustling, with that real 'local' feel. There are always big groups of Italian families eating here. Service can be a bit ho-hum, but it comes out quickly and tastes good. And for the price, you can't complain. My wife and I often go in with a bottle of wine (byo, of course), share a garlic bread and a large pizza and walk out with change from a twenty! Cheap night out!
