Well I have read some of the other reviews and I can't believe what some of the people have said about this fabulous little restaurant. I have travelled the world and have to say that when I return from overseas that this is one of my first stops! I can't fault this restaurant.
The food, ambience, value are all amazing and Il Cortile is ran by all round beautiful people. One of the best restaurants in Sydney, Australia and the world. Do yourself a favor and get there!
I went there for Valentine's Day and I have to admit the service was pretty ordinary. The restaurant wasn't even busy but it took ages to order. The food was pretty good but overpriced, it was $65.00 per person. It used to be one of my favourite restaurants but not anymore! There isn't much on offer for me to go back and there are other restaurants around Sydney where I can happily spend $65.00 without feeling like I spent too much on dinner. I thought I'd go there for the special night. I won't be coming back.
We dined as a family of 6 (4 adults, 1 senior, 1 junior) on a Friday night at 7.00. Were seated at a lovely elevated outdoor table though accessing it from the stairs was a little dodgy (and I had not consumed any alcohol as yet!), was too windy to stay out there beyond ordering our meals so we were moved without fuss to a warm cosy inside table. Overall the service was inconsistent, prompt and warm on arrival then just sort of disappeared. Ended up having four different waitresses tend to us which was unnecessary, given how uncrowded the place was when we dined.
Passed on entrees albeit for a basket of garlic bread though it was not enough really to share. My partner had veal parmigiana and after a bite to try I had wished I had passed on the chicken marsala. Though the marsala had been recommended to me I found its sweetness and soup-like sauce too much and could not really enjoy the generous serve to completion. Thankfully a smidge of the veal was left for me (or rather I claimed it in the name of our usual restaurant plate-swap). This dish was the highlight, tender, light, flavoursome. Not the stodgy pub-like dish I have endured in the past. Desserts were shared, creme caramel, apple pie (more a cake I would say) and chocolate mousse. All were nice but not that impressive. The bill, with one bottle of wine, one beer and a softdrink plus meals for five and the one bread basket came in at $182 and I thought it was a little expensive. Of course this is Balmain and prices are upwardly mobile just like the residents of the last decade.
Having been born and raised in the suburb I still cling to 70's memories of tucked away gourmet secret treats be they french, asian, italian or the bug in the east of the suburb. I guess those days are gone so sighs my wallet, being now a resident of Leichhardt I think I will stay closer to home for the Italian experience. This is always the benchmark for me. If I could make it at home and it would taste better, then I would not be back. Sorry Il Cortile it is a nice space and a good try with food and service but it all just does not quite get there.
The best food in Balmain!!! To my knowledge Il Cortile have never served clams in the last 18 months since coming under new ownership......... Ducks could you have eaten at Il Casale (I believe this restaurant is on the same road)?????
My boyfriend and I went on a Sunday night around 6pm. The restaurant just opened for dinner so it was nice and quiet. The waitress we had was friendly and made us feel welcome. I had a chicken marsala and my boyfriend had a penne dish (sorry dont remember the name) with 2 glasses of wine. The chicken was delicious, the sauce creamy, light and sweet. Pasta was very well done. My glass of wino was a little dirty but ok, I still drank from it.
For dessert, had a Choc Mousse but I think it was pre-made because the waitress gave it to me 1min after I asked! It was nice but was runny at the bottom. Bill came to around $56 much to my surprise, I was expecting more. All in all, this is a pretty good restaurant. Don't really have anything to complain about. Will definitely come back
I am a regular customer at Il Cortile. I love the place and the food. Thought that I would have a look at what has been said about them lately as I can not fault there food. I am sorry to day that their menu hasn't contained vongole for over 12 months. Not sure who wrote the previous statement but double check your facts before making up stories. Check there menu out. It's great and very very well priced. They cater for all.
A group of 4 dined. Most us enjoyed their meals. The service was pretty good and the value is what you expect to pay in Balmain. The pasta vongola was seemly good reasonably good until I was sick after the meal. One or two of the clams were not open so I left them. Unstanderably these incidents do happen. Either the supplier or other external sources. My wife and I notified politely in writing Il Cortile of the incident. What followed later with an abusive telephone call. To sum up my friends and I have never eaten or will ever recommend to eaten at Il (Ill) Cortile"
I ate at Il cortile on a tuesday night. They had just started their new summer menu. It was completely different to what I viewed at the front. The menu is now a lot larger and catered for all. Prices range from very cheap to moderate. My partner had the Beef and Reef Dish while I had veal marsala. Wow!! It was really great. The steak to a little while to come out but my partner could not stop saying how great it was. My veal was great. The best thing was both our dishes came with mash potato and fresh vegetables. A real winner. Will definitely go back.
I read some of the comments before and really can't understand how people could not have been happy with Il Cortile!! I had dinner there with some friends and the first thing that hit us was just how beautiful the place was - the main attraction being the pizza oven. The service was personable and it was more like dinner at a friend's. We really appreciated the way the staff interacted with us - we were more than just bums on seats, we felt like family. The menu's been changed recently and offers are interesting spread for those of us who aren't big Italian food foodies. I had the pork belly and it was worth ever calorie. All in all, it was an unforgettable experience and I would definitely recommend it to all. Ignore the critics - some people are just never happy unless they've got something to complain about.
