We had an enjoyable Saturday eve here, taking advantage of one of the best “Eatability” deals on offer. Arrive and order before 7.00 pm any night of the week and they’ll knock 50% off your bill. No upper limit and no minimum spend. Only restriction is that it covers a max of six people in your party. We couldn’t believe our luck but they honoured it even including the drinks.
So five of us dined and the total cost was $145 or just under $30 a head. For that we had two shared starters, mains all round, two desserts, two Irish coffees, a bottle of wine and a couple of beers. You can’t complain about that.
Full price at $60 a head, isn’t a bargain but then this is the sort of place you only go to when there’s a special deal on offer! For those interested, the Syd Ent Book also has a voucher for one free meal up to $35 but of course, the offers can’t be used together.
We had taken the precaution of booking ahead although when we arrived at 6.30 pm the place was fairly empty. It did fill up as the evening wore on suggesting to me that not too many people are aware of the 50% discount offer.
The Hughenden is an old hotel which has been lovingly looked after with historic photos lining the corridors. Maybe not the kind of place I’d like to stay at but a good choice for a Saturday nights entertainment. We sat indoors, there is also an outdoors section and because we came early we had our choice of tables, which I thought was a nice touch. Too often we book ahead only to be given the worse table in the house.
For starters, we shared the tasting tapas plate with bocconcini and herb bread, and a selection of dips. It was fresh and tasty and just the right portion sizes to whet our appetite for the rest of the evening’s fair but not so much as to unnecessarily fill us up.
For my main I had grilled beef tenderloin with potato gratin and bordelaise sauce. One of the tastiest, juiciest and most tender cuts of meat I’ve had for a long time and well cooked to perfection, just the way I like it. The potato gratin complemented the meat well but didn’t overwhelm it and the red wine butter was a good choice. A perfect meal. My wife had the salmon which was similarly delicious and one of our dining companions went for the kangaroo, but I wouldn’t recommend that on either moral or taste grounds.
For desserts we opted for the rich choc pot (with fudge ice cream and sugar web), the crème brulee and two Irish coffees. The fudge ice cream was a nice treat and the Irish’s were deliciously creamy albeit something of an indulgence.
Service from our waitress was polite, efficient and professional. The ambience was pleasant and relaxed and noise levels were fine despite the lack of carpets and the metal furniture. It’s a small space inside which I guess could get noisy but then this is a classy establishment with no rowdy, drunken parties!
Toilets are sparkling white, clean and well stocked and this I haven’t seen before, the spare toilet rolls are kept in plastic wrappers.
You’ll find the Hughenden near the corner of Queen and Oxford Streets in Woollahra, which makes parking a tad difficult. There are two hour spots in front of the hotel and we were lucky to get one of those.
This is one place we won’t hesitate to come back to. The food is excellent, service is attentive and the ambience is perfect for a laid back Sat night. No-one rushes you out the door here and you’re welcome to linger and then explore the interesting old hotel on your way out.
