Surprising. By day Hobbits sells ice cream, sun screen and terrific bacon and egg rolls but by night Sharon and Kelvin pull out the candles and serve some delicious food. Sharons specialty is the Malaysian chicken curry with roti and Kelvin's is French and Italian cuisine. The menu is not extensive but everything is worth a try although we do keep coming back to that curry.

Hobbits is a great little neighbourhood cafe that does all the usual breakfasts, coffee etc. but what really surprises is the excellent Malaysian food that Calvin and Sharon cook up! It is delicious and always served with a smile. I can highly recommend the Chicken Curry.

Hobbits offer great value and they turn on the atmosphere at night. If you live near Bondi, this has to become one of your regulars.

Tucked in a little corner up the north end of Campbell Parade on Bondi Beach, opposite the North Bondi surf club, sits Hobbits. Looks is deceptive for this little cafe. It appears like a simple take away fast food shop. My friend and I first walked in one late morning with little or no expectations. Lo and behold, when the banana ricotta pancakes and chicken hummus mango salad was served in front of me, I was amazed. It looked like a presentation from a fine cafe. And the taste, delicious!

We ended the meal with a good decent coffee late. From then on, I have tried most on the breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. My favourite breakfast is off course the delicious fluffy ricotta pancakes with raspberry butter, with an added serve of bacon! My favourite lunch besides the lovely chicken hummus mango salad, is the yummy burger made from homemade beefcheeks patty. This warm lightly toasted juicy burger with bacon, cheese, crunchy greens and tangy beetroot, easily beats some gourmet burgerjoints I have tried.

My favourite dinner is of course the braised beefcheeks in dark chocolate redwine sauce with mashpotatoes and spinach. Oh Yum! The beefcheeks simply melts in the mouth. It comes as no surprise that Kelvin, the chef and co-owner, used to be a chef in the kitchen of a 5 star hotel! And if you are a fan of authentic Malaysian food, this is a great secret place not many knows about.

The co-chef and co-owner, Sharon is a Malaysian who loves home cooking! I love the roti paratha (or as the Malaysians calls it Roti Canai) with chicken curry, heavenly Kelvins grandma's braised pork belly, and the "never get tired of" curry laksa. Indeed the place to frequent for a satisfying inexpensive meal, food that looks and tastes good!
