I've been here twice, once for dinner pre show and another time just for dessert. The staff are friendly, the restaurant has a nice vibe and they are so efficient. The food isn't exciting, but they deliver with freshness and quality. It's perfect for the diverse range of patrons that attend the theatre yet it sets itself a high standard. Was very touched when we just went in for dessert. The waiter gave us some bread rolls anyway, just because! They were busy and it was a nice touch.
My dining companion and I were absolutely bowled over by the speed and efficiency of the staff here. We were seated and fed within fifteen minutes of arrival! Great for a pre-theatre dinner - it gave us plenty of time to contemplate dessert and the bookshop next door.
I enjoyed an excellent wild mushroom risotto which had a superb texture, boasting just the right amount of nuttiness, beautifully complemented by the fresh parmesan.
It was just a simple meal but well done, and the staff are to be complimented in not making diners feel like poor relations if they opt not to order side dishes and the like. We opted for the bookshop over dessert in the end, but next time it will be on the list.
As Sydney Theatre subscribers we'll definitely be back. Dinner at Hickson Road rounds off the whole experience beautifully.
Hi there, the Four Season's hotel recommended I try the Hickson Road Bistro, when down on a recent work trip from London where I live, and I'm so glad I did. The staff could not have been more helpful, the food fresh and interesting as was the locale. I would highly recommend any one eating at this little hidden gem.
This restaurant caterers well for pre-theatre patrons going to the theatre next door. The menu is small but varied, the portion sizes generous, but particularly the service swift, so you have plenty of time to get to the theatre. On the couple of occasions we have been there, it has been full so recommend booking in advance.
We have a subscription to the Sydney Theatre Company and often eat at the Wharf (which I highly recommend for food service and ambience. Recently decided to try Hickson Rd ....will not make this mistake again. The food was completely unremarkable and the portions were not generous. The waiter could only be described as rude and as a matter of fact his behaviour spoilt our evening. Take my advice go to one of the many better restaurants and give Hickson Rd a miss.
Had a weird encounter with a 'Basil Fawlty' head waiter who accused us of having booked two tables under different names. He returned twice and in the face of our confusion stormed off. Once they had worked out the mistake (a waiter had seated us at the wrong table). Basil sent another waiter to apologise. All other waiting staff were great so I have graded service at 2. Food was good but not great (a measly portion of risotto was especially ordinary). Seating just inside the open area was also a litte sweaty (Basils antics didn't help).
Ate here pre-theatre and we were not rushed in having dinner in time for the play. Food was good without being spectacular. Service good. Likely to revisit pre-show.
This Bistro has been serving up top quality food since the new Sydney Theatre opened. The menu may be on the brief side (like 6 or 7 entrees and 6 or 7 mains) but we never have any trouble finding something to like. On our recent visit we really liked the duck liver parfait, the crab pasta, the duck confit in a mini cassoulet and the pork cutlet.
Led by Stephen, the service is fantastic, particularly if you get there early for the theatre or late if not going to the theatre. We have always been well looked after and look forward to more visits.
We stumbled upon this place on the way to the theatre, and decided to dine despite the empty dining room, and despite knowing nothing of the restaurant, because of their 'can-do' attitude on quick pre-theatre food.
The waiter was helpful, and entertaining, and well versed in the menu, including cooking times of various dishes and individual cheeses on the cheese board.
The ambience was nice, we dined outside taking in the warm evening air, and enjoying the lighting which almost appeared like daylight, just with soft edges.
The standout gastronomical mouth explosion came from a sesame coated seared piece of tuna, served with a bright green super fresh olive oil with eggplant and mustard sauce, tomato jelly, and fresh coriander. Not only did it delight on the plate, it blew me away, and gave me a flavour combination that I have never experienced before. And why not, I ask, because it was poetry in the mouth?
We also enjoyed a risotto, which was made on carnaroli rice, something I have been reading about in Gourmet Traveller, but had not yet seen on a menu. I liked it much better than arborio, as it had the 'glue' but also retained a sense of the grains. The mushrooms and artichokes added a big zesty flavour, and the parmesan was clearly freshly grated. All in all a great dish.
We capped the meal off with a lovely cheese board, which impressed me by having a French blue, an Italian washed rind AND two Australian cheeses (an impressive Tasmanian cheddar, and an Edith Ash Goat's Cheese). It was served with a walnut and raisin bread, lavosh, sliced green apple and dried muscatels. All the cheeses were in decent serves, and were at the optimum ripeness.
Our martinis were dry, and smooth, and the bill was a pleasant surprise. And I will be returning for the food - theatre optional. Well done.
We enjoyed our pre-theatre meal here and felt lucky to get a table on such a busy evening as we had not booked. Service was swift, friendly and efficient. The space is lovely (a bit noisy but it was a very busy evening). Furniture is comfortable. Tableware is sleek, elegant and practical - and they trust the customers sufficiently to put a small pepper grinder on each table. Our meals were well presented and delicious - a steak for the meat man, grilled ocean trout with lentils and spinach for me. It is a shame that all this was let down by a few minor things - slightly stale bread rolls served with equally stale, mediocre butter; mundane salt; a smeared water glass. The later was replaced instantly when its condition was drawn to the waitress's attention - but why was it allowed out of the kitchen in that state? We will use this as a pre-theatre venue again. If we go to sample a longer, more leisurely meal we will be sure to avoid the busy times.
