Waitress service is there a negative rating on a scale 0-5? Food- excellent, promptly served after ordering, on the overpriced side . Ambience, decor -v. good
Problem-waitress cleared away food and drinks and cutlery while still eating, waitress refused to take orders (read below).
Organised a large group of 20 people last Wed night. Stated time of arrival was 5.30 to 6 pm as folk arrived from work. No one was directed to the table and there was no reserved signs on them on arrival. On enquiring about ordering some meals on arrival, told to order meals from bar. We had been told previously to order drinks from bar to get the happy hour specials (5.30 - 6.30 pm).
As I wanted a steady supply of hot food to go with drinks as people arrived, I had to continually order from bar. I enquired about ordering just a few dishes to start with, but was told I had to order from bar. Each time took about 5 minutes to 10 minutes to place an order. They were busy. Not the bar staff fault, they were good. The food was prompt, steaks and mussels are well cooked and delicious. I ordered mussel pots to share and kept a continual supply as the amount in the entrees was too small. I wish the waitress service could match the food.
After we had ordered about 5 meals, the waitress asked if we were ready to order the same one who had refused to take orders previously! We wanted to order in small groups of 4 or so. This was not acceptable to her, so after half a table (5 people) she stated she had to take orders for everyone or not at all. Even if we pay as we go. We all had to order from the bar.
The problem here was, whenever folk mingled at the other end of the table or went to the bar to buy drinks or food, or even visited to loo, she cleared away everything on that section of the table, the uneaten pots of mussels, the plates, the cutlery-used and unused, the serviettes, the half drunk beer (and at $13.50 a drink, this was costly). This happened a no of times. She completely cleared table as if we had left.
I confronted her and asked for new plates. She refused to provide new plates and cutlery, replying haughtily we had to first order more food! She had cleared the food too, although there was still another pot of mussels further down the table. She had cleared the serving spoons, so we had to use our hands to get the mussels from the pot. We ended up taking cutlery from other tables to continue eating from the remaining mussel pots until we ordered more. Preferred a supply of hot food, than a lot sitting going cold!
So you need a person to take orders and place them, and one to stop the staff clearing away your food and drinks! It makes it difficult if you can not place orders (and pay if you like) as you go for food. But there is no excuse for clearing away food and drinks while a function is still going without first asking if we want anything taken away, or looking to see if forks and knives are placed parallel?
I'd give 10/10 to the kitchen staff for speed of service and quality of cooking
and a negative 10000 for that waitress! I complained to the staff at the central area, but did not know the name of the waitress. The Heritage should have come to the table and asked how many people were affected by having their food and drinks removed while still eating!, offered replacement food and drinks at the least but it occurred a no of times to many people on the table!
Personally I cannot cope with drinking for an hour before I eat. I guess this means no functions there, but as a couple or a group of 4 or so, it should be fine, just have someone there watching your drinks and food at all times! The mussels and steaks are excellent as is the beer (recommend the mussels with tomato over the chilli ones and steak (medium is pink), and Chamis Blue beer if you like Guinness-style beer
Food was great, drinks very expensive. Absolutely beautiful and unique venue but it's ruined by the slow service. To be honest I couldn't tell the difference between those socialising and those whom were staff! Expect to wait at least 15 minutes for a drink and that's not because it's busy!
I have never written a negative review, as for the most part, restaurateurs will hear a complaint and come to some agreement, at best after a dissatisfactory meal I will not return. Not the case at the Belgian Beer Cafe in The Rocks, my friends and I are so incensed, we felt the need to vent.
As part of a group of 7 friends on a Sunday evening, we arrived and had to approach the bar, after being stranded at the front, to find someone to seat us at our reserved table. From then the night soured. A waitress leaning across the entire table to serve drinks to the other end (there was complete access around the table) then upon asking what the specials were, it was a curt instruction ‘read the specials board.’
Entrees being, pork belly, calamari, and pate the former two were tasty, the pate inedible, inexcusable, three of us tried and failed to palate the foul offering which couldn’t even be spread, its form resilient to any pressure. When the waitress next appeared I said, ‘please show this to the chef it is terrible’, it was silently removed. Mains came, 4 pots of mussels, all tasty and good, gnocchi, average, 2 steaks, fine except for the fact that the kitchen swapped the steaks, so the one who ordered a medium got a medium rare and vice versa. We told the waitress who replied, ‘no, I have it written here, you ordered the....’ how can you argue with that hey? The Beer is good.
We requested the bill and the waitress was asked if she’d removed the pate from the bill to which she replied ‘no, you ate it.’ We explained that of the four pieces one and a half remained on the plate, someone managed to swallow one, mine was spat into a tissue, ‘well, I’ll ask the manager.’ We didn’t see her for twenty minutes, at which point we paid the bill, to the cent and left.
On balance, I would say, go for the mussels, expect to be treated as pigs at the trough, generous lubrication helps, minimum 5 beers, and have yourself a good time.
Like the decor and general ambience. To be honest though the beers are very expensive and we shared a dessert which was $13.50, we went for the belgian waffle which came out as half a waffle with some chocolate sauce and ice cream, even the waiter looked embarrassed bringing it out, shame really as I like the place.
The food was standard but pricey, that's cool, you expect that in theme restaurants. They had misplaced our booking, again, these things can happen. The meal was delayed. Well it is xmas and we had time to spare.
The service, however, was beyond disappointing. We ordered a style of beer that was not available, the waiter comes over to the table, announced the beer is not available and left. I went to the bar person to re order and questioned why he didn’t ask if we had a second preference, he told me he had not approached the table and we had not ordered beer, I challenged this and he dismissed it with a curt “ why would I serve you” and again walked away.
They delivered the wrong drinks which we returned. We then proceeded to ask three times to have the drinks removed from the bill, it seems if they write it down, you ordered it! A white wine spritzer is a white wine and a spritzer, a bourbon and coke is bourbon and a separate glass of coke. Try arguing that one.
Finally they took the $45 off the bill but only with a harrumph and a foot stamp that would equal that of a petulant 3 year old. I apologise to the friends I convinced to visit the restaurant.
Came here for a Friday night work party. My partner is from Belgium and was keen to try Sydney's moules frites. Range of Belgium beers is excellent but price quite high. Service a bit slow and sloppy but the general atmosphere was a lot of fun. I'll be back to try the special offers they have running through the week.
I tried the Belgian style sausages and they tasted alright. But I only got 2 sausages and it was quite expensive for the small dish! I'm not a small eater and not a big one either, but I was left hungry after spending $25 on a main. Nice place and nice atmosphere though!
My friends and I being vegetarians ordered the only vege dish on the menu, lasagne, which was awful. Beer was good. Perhaps, the non veg options were better. But I would not go back there to eat.
Came in for few beers on a wednesday night and by the end we stayed for dinner. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable on food and beer. Large portion and lots of different beer. Loved it and will recommend this place to a lot of friend.
From about the halfway point of the meal onwards we were continually fighting off over zealous staff as they desperately attempted to clear plates from our table that were still loaded with food. Rather than asking "are you done with that?" staff would attempt to grab plates, sometimes with cutlery still poised for the next bite.
Despite our best efforts and upwards of 8 requests for staff to please leave our food until we had finished eating, our last bowl of chips disappeared in some sort of stealth recon mission as we momentarily let our guards down. Having bought a round of drinks as we were waiting for the bill, we were told shortly after that we had to vacate the table for another booking. Asking if we could finish our drinks, we were told that no, they needed the table in 10 minutes so we would have to move.
No alternative was suggested and no room at the bar was available. So, drink up and get out basically. Oh, and the food was ok but certainly not great. Needless to say we'll never be back.
