I just left Helm Bar and was also there last Saturday and had the most fabulous night. We ate some of the share plates and they were fantastic, sampled some of the cocktails the carafe ones are a treat! I loved the Sangria one of the best I've ever had. The Dj really got the place pumpinjg and evryone really seemed to be enjoying themselves. We were in a group of about 10 people and they all can't wait to go back.
I think they have done a fabulous job with the renovations and should be commended on their efforts. Friendly staff, great atmosphere, music and yummy food. So happy you're open again.
Went to Helm Bar last night; the makeover has been quite successful but the security staff were boorish, bar staff seemed inexperienced and it is fair to say there was a large amount of riffraff among the clientele. The bar has been moved to the west side of the building which opens up the main area substantially. The alfresco area has overhead heating and the lights cycle between various colours which is neat.
I ordered a round of cocktails; the bar had run out of mint so I could not order a mojito and got blank looks when I asked for a caprioska. There was a single staff member making all the cocktails so the poor guy was flat out and when our order arrived the drinks were quite frankly complete disappointing.
The security staff were hopeless. When we went to leave via the main entrance, one of the guys turned to us and said 'we are exiting via the rear tonight'. One of my companions asked if we could continue down the stairs as we were here already and it would save the inconvenience of walking back through all the patrons. He simply repeated himself so we complied. I thought perhaps there was a big lineup out the front but when we walked past there was not a soul outside other than the bouncers.
The music was good. The dj actually had some taste and played some really good tunes. I should have asked his name. There were plenty of bose speakers around the place but there was quite a bit of fuzz on the output; quite a common complaint in a venue but not when a brand new audio system has been installed.
We went on a saturday night and frankly this is place lacks any class. If you would like to behave like a complete trash bag with a view of the harbour then by all means saddle up and come on down. In the three hours we attended there was a smashed glass (which was not cleaned up) and several drunken falls which resulted in much laughter and applause by patrons in the immediate vicinity. Plenty of people were off their faces without consuming any alcohol and you would have thought binging was a requirement of the establishment if you were to drink.
