I've eaten here quite a few times, always late at night which I think is the only way to go. Not only do I love driving all the way to the city for the food (which is decent), I love watching all the other customers who are present, from bikers, to mobsters and thugs, from Japanese tourists to lovers, from cabbies to navy officers. Its absolutely fantastic having such a mix of people huddled around the van/shack eating and hanging out. Especially in winter.
I've tried better pies elsewhere (best place is Nyngan in outback NSW), but the Tiger curry pie or hot dogs are fantastic after a long day (I especially love the mash and gravy!), I don't drink, so I have had all my faculties when eating here, and the food really isn't that bad, sometimes quite dry, but great nevertheless.
I've left Sydney for a while for work, and now that I'm pregnant, all I crave are pie's from Harry's!
Awesome for a random night out especially when you are starving at 1 am, cheap eat meat-pies but the quality is great. The original tiger pie served with mash, mashed peas and gravy always hits the spot and at $5.80 which is more than you'd pay for a standard pie, it always hits the spot. Theres a reason why even at 1 am its packed with hungry people.
Hey if you are coming here for a gourmet experience you’re kidding yourself its pies and hotdogs! We came down to Sydney for the Australia day long weekend and hadn’t done Harry’s before so we got a train to Kings Cross walk through the cross following a Sydney walking guide. We had to hit Sydney on a 38 degree day so as you could imagine not a great day for hot dogs and pie sales, the lad who served us did mention we looked like being his lunch time rush for the day.
Well Harry’s is all about location, history and of course pie’s with mash spuds, mashed peas and gravy its bucket list experience for Australian’s and it is a great location for a quirky little pie van, I only wish I could have fitted in a hot dog de wheels as well.
How can you not love Harry's? Regardless of the long lines and water rats running around nearby this place just freaking rules, if anything the rats and throngs of drunks adds to the ambience!
You will find all walks of life here (especially past 1 am on a weekend) savouring the deliciousness that is Harry's.. mmmm it's perfection on a paper plate, the flakiness of the crust, the slightly spiced meaty sauce, the heavenly hearty chunks of beef, the whipped mashed potatoes and delicious pond of gravy, truly what dreams are made of after a night on the booze.
The famous Harry's Cafe De Wheels pies/hot dogs. Can't remember how many times I've eaten here! At least once or twice a week. The hot dog de wheels and the tiger pies are the usual standouts. Curry pie is great too! The cheese sauce matches great with just a hotdog and chilli sauce, or just gettin a plain beef pie with mash and gravy is another great choice!
Some times it can get very busy, but you will definitely have the same great service from all the staff.
I can't remember how many times I have been here for a late night feed over the years. One thing that stands out is that the food is getting worse and worse as time progresses. I know it's a Sydney icon and every celebrity and his dog has eaten there, (God only knows why), it's lost it's charm and is looking tatty, but drop in for a pie if you are in the area and can get a parking spot.
What a load of rubbish! If this place didn't have the history or reputation that it has, nobody in their right mind would eat there. Fortunately, for this place the fantastic foreshore location would let them serve up manure and still do a roaring trade.
I have had pies and hot dogs from here for the last five years and I have to honestly say that the food has gotten worse than its already average beginning. Without the clouded judgement of the location, too many beers or the limited culinary experience of the taxi drivers and council workers that frequent this place, the food can best be described as a glorified 7/11 pie oven.
After today I've literally had a gut full of this place and I recommend that if you want to eat something decent on the foreshore of Woolloomooloo, buy a pie from somewhere else.
Whatever the review's tell you, if you're visiting Sydney for the first time, Harry's Pies are a must try. Had a beef pie with mash and gravy and nice dollop of mushy peas on the side. What a great way to end a walk in the RBG. I love it. Try it and make up your own mind. By the way, the Chillis are pretty much perfect too on a cold day.
