Ate here after watching a movie at 7pm, Sunday night. Really crave typical Chinese style soup dishes. Good feed but value not as good as you can get in Dulwich Hill, Canterbury etc but fits in with the whole Newtown feel.
I got the prawn, scallop and wonton soup (choice of egg, rice or vermicilli noodles), seafood was good quality, great serve, they forgot my wontons but no big deal as they brought them out ($12). Brother got the chicken egg noodle soup with wontons ($10), sister got the cripsy skin chicken egg noodle soup ($12). Free tea. Order and pay at counter, they bring the food to you with cutlery (although cutlery stand near counter), which was good. Nice chilli sauce is brought too.
We ate it all up, only complaint is cripsy skin chicken was really salty but doused in the soup, it's fine and so thought they would have had hai nan chicken rice on the menu but they sadly didn't. Good, cheap place for soups, other reviewer is right more interesting places in Newtown but it serves up good for what you crave.
My favourite laksa and noodle place by far. The best laksa anywhere!! Don't bother if you are going for a romantic dinner. This is a casual, quick service restaurant serving fresh and delicious food always. I often crave Happy Chef!
Serving up cheap and cheerful Chinese crowd-pleasers is all this King St cornerstone is about. Everything from the food to the service to the decor is basic and unpretentious and that's exactly the way it ought to be.
No fuss old-fashioned honest healthy Chinese favourites at economical price. The no-need-to-decorate 80's barn style atmosphere is a welcome change from the designer obsession swamping all things foodie.
I like to call this place "the kitchen" at one point I think I was eating here 5 nights a week. I recommend sticking to the soups. The chichen laksa and BBQ wonton noodle soups are my favs. The Singapore noodles also rate a mention but most of the other dishes are strickly old school RSL Chinese. Still good value after recent price rises.
Well one of two Chinese places in Newtown I can think of, it's nothing special here, it costs a little more than other Chinese places but the food is still good and what you would expect. Chinatown isn't far away, it's better value that way.
Happy Chef is like a local canteen to us. We have visited this place consistently 2 to 3 times per month over the last 3 years. I always order the same dish, Singapore Noodle Traditional (you can have the seafood or vegetarian variation), and my partner always have the same Mongolian Beef with rice. It's almost like a religion, simply because the flavour is great. Their portion is always generous too. They are licenced with good selection of beer included imported ones and serve wine by the glass. Price is slightly expensive, about $10 for Singapore noodle but it worths every penny of it. Gelatossimo is right next door for dessert follow-up!
P.S. We saw Jessica Mauboy (Oz Idol 1st runner up 2006) dining with her mum and a friend there this week. She was such a charming girl, appeared a little shy, but couldn't helped but keep smiling back at the people who noticed her there.
Cheap and an old faithful when I'm having trouble choosing between all the excellent places to eat in Newtown. The food is surprisingly good for such an unassuming-looking place.
