I lived near Riverwood for 20+ years and have only recently moved. Gus', and Phillip Lee's before it, will be my benchmark for great takeaway fish and chips.

They've closely stuck to the Lee's original recipe which is great because it was this that made it a standout takeaway to begin with. A diversion would see Gus' become just another mediocre chip shop. Their homemade spring rolls and fishcakes are delicious enough to drive me into an insatiable foodlust on the odd occasion. The fish and chips can sometimes be on the greasy side, but that's par for the course for any takeaway.

It is just a takeaway fish and chip shop, so ambience is next to non-existent. There are a few chairs and cafe tables for those that are waiting, or can't wait to gobble their goodies, and you're never pressured to move on regardless of how long you sit down, licking your salty fingers.

I miss you, Gus'.

The variety here is brilliant. You get better than restaurant quality seafood at a takeaway price.

Best fish and chips I've had ever. My other half got the recommendation from a fellow kiwi and we haven't looked back. Been here plenty of times and have always been delighted with the quality and freshness of the fish. We alternate between the battered bream and whiting depending on our mood. Our kids love the fish cocktails too, which are always meaty and fresh. Its old school fish and chips done perfectly and wrapped up paper. We've been hunting for a place like this for years!

Had to try the home made spring roll thats won awards and rave reviews but it didn't do it for me. Stick to the fish and chips and potato scallops and you can't go wrong. I gave them a low score for the ambience because I don't think this place is designed for eating in. Phone in your take away orders and they'll be ready in 10 minutes then go to a park for a picnic or run them home. The staff are efficient and friendly and have never got an order of ours wrong.

When the inlaws come from NZ we grab the family pack, unbelievable value! The only thing that fails them is they don't have a gargen or greek salad available, they just seafood, coleslaw or octopus. It would be great to be able to grab a healthy salad to accompany the deep fried goodness and dilute the guilt!

I went here after reading the reviews and was impressed! Not the place to dine in but excellent food, good quality and lots of variety to suit all tastes. I had the marinated octopus which was tender and the fish and chips tasted like they used to when I was young!
