I’ve lived in Newtown for two years finishing my postgrad and starting a career. Studying n working long hours, I’ve eaten out a lot. Amidst Newtown’s renowned smattering of exotic foods (Thai in particular) which become very samey after a while, finding a relaxed, affordable high-quality Modern Australian restaurant was awesome.
On a student’s wage, I could actually afford to keep coming back to a restaurant with a diverse, unique and ever changing menu. I’ve been there about 10-15 times now for dinner every mate or date I’ve brought along has agreed it’s a great place for dinner or hot chocolate before or after drinks or a movie. Most of the time service has been friendly accurate and prompt.
For dessert, they do an old fashioned French-style hot chocolate which you can’t imagine till you’ve tried. It’s da bomb.
Worst breakfast ever! Burnt, cold, and my carnivorous friend only received one small piece of charcoal masquerading as bacon. When we politely complained to the waiter, he looked at us as if we were aliens. I attempted my veggie breakfast but the baked beans were cold and the dried beans obviously hadn't been soaked long enough.
We couldn't eat the breakfasts, received no apology for the blackened food, got charged for the very average coffee that we drank before the food reached us. Will never go there again!
Really tasty and well presented cafe food, done right! It's almost gourmet cafe without the price tag. Had all the basics and always happy, the staff are lovely. We made this one a regular.
We have returned here several times since my last review, and no matter what we order we are always happy, the staff is consistently friendly and the place is always clean and has a great atmosphere. I am always amazed at the huge size of the servings, the prices are spot on and we hardly ever manage to go over $40, even with sides and drinks.
Another nice touch is most meals come with a really yummy side salad you actually enjoy eating as much as the main, not just a few leaves on a plate. The only thing missing is cocktails!
My wife and I ate at Grub and Tucker one saturday night. The place drew our attention firstly because it was very busy and secondly it was one of the most well presented restaurants on King Street. We were seated at the back near the fireplace and were straight away given water and attended to with the wine we had taken.
We both had entrees, garlic prawns for myself and a barramundi crostini for my wife, both came out very fast and were lovely. We had the beef cheek spectal with parsnips & a pork belly with a scallop and almond salad both again were lovely and very well presented, value for money and the whole experence we couldn't fault. We will be back, many thanks.
What a surprise find this place was. Stumbled on it by virtue of the fact that we got parking outside on a Monday night. I had guests from overseas with me, and wanted a change from Asian. The menu offered variety, I thought almost too much to be good, but no - it was all good.
I had the risotto which was perhaps the most delicious one I can remember in a long time. My fellow diners had the barramundi and the crispy duck salad, safe choices I thought for people not from the city, but they both raved about their dishes. Dessert also offered a nice selection, two of us shared the Knickerbocker Glory, very tasty - although it would have been easier to access in a glass not so tall and narrow.
Ambience was a bit odd, and almost enough to make me skip the place if I was just walking past, so don't judge this book by its cover. But considering it had such an 'Aussie' name, the interior decor seemed a bit confused with all sorts of different genres. But I suppose that's Newtown for you. Well worth the visit, and I will be back again!
The last few months (July '08) the service has really picked up which it had to if it was to match the food. Their beef and lamb and fish dinners are amazingly good for the cost (around $20). There's nothing better on King if you want a break from Asian, and it's a winter's night. If they had a dimmer switch on the electric globes for a better ambience in the evening I think they would be packed out.
I came here with with my family for a late lunch. The food was great, good size portions and you couldn't fault the service either. It was a very pleasant afternoon and we will definitely be coming back.
The breakfast here is great, HUGE servings of everything and the rooibos with honey tea mmm. However, the service needs a lot of looking into. After both finishing a great brunch, my friend and I decided to pull out a few books to study. We ordered more drinks after our meal not to be rude, however, we abruptly asked by a waitress, "So you guys just going to sit there or what?"
We would have understood if there were people waiting for tables, but there was only one other table in the whole cafe that was taken. Get better waitresses or ones that aren't so ridiculously rude to customers.
We went for an early Thursday night dinner hoping for a quick dinner, ended up waiting over 30 minutes (quiet night as well). Fish was dry and severely overcooked. Veggies were the frozen variety and the potato tasted like instant Deb. Staff was lovely but what a horrid dining experience, will never eat here again.
The food was great and the coffee was good but they don't seem to have ironed out their table service yet. We were a large group and so we obliged by staggering our orders. However, we were still left with an empty plate obstacle course on our table long after the first round of eating was done.
