This is one of our favourite restaurants - the food is great and is great value, particularly on a student budget. It's a family run business, and we're regulars there, so the staff are always pleased to see us and we never have any issues with service. And they never try to shoo us out the door after dinner, no matter how busy it gets (which it does sometimes).
The buffet looks convenient and good value for single diners, but I'd actually recommend sticking to the menu - for some reason, the buffet just doesn't taste as good as the fresh-cooked menu meals. They're made really fast, so it's not like you have to wait that long anyway. The food's great for vegos, and even for omnivorous diners it's a great detox meal - the Monk's Choice always leaves you feeling healthy for days, as will the whole Ling Zhi mushroom claypot. And the desserts a lovely, guilt-free pleasures (the moon cakes and the mango sago pudding are constant favourite).
My partner and I, and my dad and brother went here last night for my brother's birthday. My partner and I are omnivores, but my dad is vegetarian, and my brother is vegan. Usually when we go out, there might be 6-10 menu items that are vegetarian, but only maybe 1 or 2 that are vegan (and then usually only very bland items).
This place was amazing. 100% vegan, so there was no limit on what we could have, and boy, there was a lot of choice. We found ourselves gravitating to those menu items which had corresponding pictures, which mostly looked great. About half the menu is of the Not-Meat variety, which none of us fancy, so we shared 4 entrees and 4 mains from the remainder, and we were STUFFED, but still managed to squeeze in 3 desserts between us.
I honestly cannot fault the food at all. The flavours were great, the variety of ingredients was vast, the presentation looked great, and certainly the serving sizes were impressive. (we are a family of big eaters) probably the only thing that was disappointing would be the sang choi bau, I have had better vegetarian versions, but I don't know if they were vegan.
T
he young coconut drink was delicious too. We barely noticed the decor, it was not scrappy, but not overly fussy with the presentation either. The waitresses were lovely, courteous and helpful (perhaps, a little too helpful actually, but not in an overbearing way). For what we ordered, I thought the bill (which I was not paying, but did see) was quite acceptable.
All in all, it's become a good contender for a favourite restaurant, we've arrange to go back again next week, and my partner and I are going to drag other omnivore friends there separately. Highly recommended.
I've been here before and the concept of the buffet food being priced by the weight of your food is a good idea. But on a Saturday night at around 8.30 pm they NO LONGER continue to put food at the buffet part was disappointing. I asked if there was any more noodles and they said the buffet was no longer going to have any extra food put on it!!
The food was ok, I've had better vegetarian elsewhere but I did like their dumplings and other dishes but the main problem was that the food was barely warm. And me and my friend felt hungry afterwards, a disappointing experience!!
We have a vegan friend who was dying to bring us here, I did very much enjoy our food and I did feel healthier when I walked out, but I don't think it will go down in my fav's list.
My favourite vegetarian haunt - love the buffet for dinner, it's great value for a great selection of meals. Can't recommend the stuffed mushrooms enough!
The ambience is alright, though it's always so busy in there it can get quite noisy. Service is always polite and helpful.
Would recommend this even to non vegetarians, I promise you will not leave feeling unsatisfied!
This place has very tasty vegan food and there's a buffet available too, which charges by weight. I had the yummy bbq "pork", stuffed mushroom, a sweet and spicy stir fry with bamboo shoots, rice "claypot style" and a wonderful lemony tofu dish. The tea was excellent too - try the 'Last Empress' and hot ginger lemon tea. The restaurant itself is warm and inviting, and the prices aren't bad- my plate cost about $10. Recommended!
I'm not a vegetarian but I do enjoy vegetarian food. It can be a bit of a hit and miss affair when it comes to preparing vegetarian foods in and around Sydney but Green Gourmet in Newtown do make their foods very well. The flavours are great and the quality is there. The only drawn back is the décor, bland to boring, and the price, it's too expensive. If you want people to be healthy and eat well you need to make prices affordable. I skip going there because of the pricing. Unfortunately, food is not enough to make me want to go back.
This place has seriously good vegetarian food. We have been going for years now and the quality is always good. In fact, we even had our wedding dinner there and enjoyed ourselves a lot. Comments about the ambience are to be ignored really. It is always clean and comfortable, so not sure why people complain. Best dish is the fried eggplant!
