The Great Northern is conveniently located on the corner of Pacific Highway and Mowbray Road. The restaurant is a barn-like area, with old-timey photos on the wall. They've recently done some renovations, chiefly to the gaming areas. The prices have gone up recently as well, but the food has not improved.
The best thing about this place is the $11 steaks with unlimited salad bars. They don't have a whole lot of vegetarian options and the specials menu is pretty hit or miss. When I last visited I had a pretty bland pasta dish. Although we used to eat here almost weekly I was pretty disappointed.
The GNH is conveniently located, but the positives stop there. Portion sizes are small for the prices, the menu is average and has not changed for 5 years and the attitude of the staff fails to make up for any of these shortcomings. The surrounds are also very underwhelming and could do with a major overhaul, although like the menu this has been the case for the past 5 years.
The Great Northern is consistent - consistently bad to middle average. I moved to Chatswood West in Sept 2003. Ever since, the food has always struck me as dull. The BBQ is ok - but the good meat (the lamb) is quite expensive. The menu has hardly changed since 2003. The drinks are also unimpressive. Tonight I couldn't even get a pinot by the glass.
And then there's the service. What you get is blondes of between 18-21 who have (it seems) failed the introductory Basic Customer Service 101. They are consistently so average it is beyond description. You may get a constructed smile -if you're lucky.
We go here because its close to home. I am never fussed on the "all you can eat" salad bar as they don't have a great range of salads, would prefer my steak with some mash than with salad.
We went as a family for Fathers day. Was well organized and the food I thought was very good value and well portioned. Was family friendly, would definitely return.
Great pub, food etc and certainly my favourite pub in the area, but the recent scrapping of toss the management is an outrage, as it was the only real promotion they had.
This pub is a great place to visit. The bistro has excellent food and is tremendous value. Nice ambience too with its cosy wood paneling and leather chesterfield lounges. Great for a quiet drink after work. I like the bottleshop - only small but has a good range of wines with friendly helpful service. Good neighbourhood pub!
This place is close for me and that's the main thing it has going for it. I can still smell the smokers from the pokies room. The bars service is quick and food is very good. I have not had a problem with it yet.
Had a ball. Good to see a local pub getting back to the basic - great pub food, good sorts behind the bar and nice cold beer. Love the decor. I'll a regular now.
