This is such a great place especially for that special occasion. The food is delicious and the service is also very good. I had the steak and it was done to perfection and tasted terrific. The desserts are also amazing!! Very handy bottle shop next door too which stocks a great variety.
The food was really, really good (I had the trout which was delicious and my husband had the seafood grill which he said was outstanding), attentive service - the decor felt a little tired in my opinion and it was a little overpriced. But loved it anyway!
The food was variable in terms of quality. Pasta entree was very tasty, however the pear, pomegranate and fennel salad was mostly fennel; pizza base was thin and soggy, seafood overcooked (except for trout which was delicious). Service was attentive, especially the drink waiter, and portions generous.
I would have recommended this restaurant despite some flaws in its food; however the (high) price lets it down. I think ones experience depends on what you order. I recommend penne for entrée and ocean trout for main.
Don't know about value, we didn't pay. Service between courses was abysmal despite the fact the restaurant wasn't busy. Wine waiter good and attentive. Fillet steak well above average. Have an open mind, next visit will be the decider.
The olive tapenade had a seed in it, the oxtail papadelle had a piece of bone in it...felt really let down but this place has such potential!!! Just a little bit of care from the chefs is all that is needed. My entree of tuna carpaccio, although served in a plate with a 2 inch lip, it’s amazingly complex and delicious dressing swirling around and doing laps over the raw pieces when the plate was put down, is one of the best tasting entrees I have ever experienced. Spicy, warm but not hot this dressing is layered in flavour and is the crowning glory of the dish.
The wine list is probably has the greatest scope of any on the street. Some hard to find gems here. eg 98 parker terra rossa drinking very well indeed. Service was friendly and the sommeliers vintage knowledge was exceptional to say the least. I will return as I think this place has so much to offer and feel they just got it wrong food wise on my first booking.
Went to Grappa with 4 friends. Table booked for 8.30 pm but because of electricity grid failure in Leichhardt and Grappa the ONLY restaurant not effected, it got swamped... and this really showed up the disorganisation of the place. We were seated at 9.30, but no offer of free drinks for the wait, just a bowl of olives... meh.
There are a lot of confused and non-communicative floor staff and the senior staff is positively Manic. However, the wine list is impressive and the food of good quality. Some ingredients were missed in my chilli vongole, namely the chilli and it was too salty. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals and it was an OK experience. As a local I would go back for the pizzas just to try. Unpretentious food at pretentious prices! If you live in Leichhardt/surrounding, give it go.
Went to Grappa last night. Not a busy night, I have nothing to rave about. Service was good, there was enough staff on the floor to make it one wait staff per table. Food was okay, not a huge variety in the mains though.
This place is trading off its history. I reckon their basic problem is that there are too many seats for the waiters and kitchen to handle it. Too greedy. This review probably will not make much difference as it seemed to be full of the local Italian community.
Where do I start? Firstly trying to find a park. I suggest just going to the other side of the main road first as there is nothing outside. I feel sorry for the staff. The woman who met us was frantically working and was nice enough given the pressure she was under. She looked hassled. We (group of 5) ended up asking to sit outside as it was so noisy inside it was unpleasant.
When the waiter finally came he too was sweating from running around and he looked slightly confused because he was trying to do so much at once. Other tables were also demanding his attention. Then long waits for everything. Water. Wine. Food. Coffee. Even the bill. We remained good humoured about it and even explained to the young staff that they could have easily sold us another bottle of wine and some liquors while we waited.
During the evening I noticed the exasperated waiter demonstrating to the kitchen for our order. I also saw staff packing up the bar and tables while we waited for coffee. Sure food was OK although not the mixed seafood. But no thanks we will not be back. Best left to the local Italians.
We had to ask for everything, to be seated, the wine list, to order the wine, to get the wine etc etc. Then when we ordered wine during the meal, they brought some we had ordered before the meal but not received, the waiter was then cranky with us for ordering twice. The food was very average to poor and for the price we were all heartily disappointed. I have been there many times before but not for a while. Charlie was still floating around but it did not have his touch. Won't be going back, pity as we live 5 minutes walk!
