Good local in Pyrmont, been there twice and they're doing it even better than before! Sang choi bow is so fresh and tasty! Basic but tasty food and good value. Highly recommended for casual dining or takeaway.
The ratings on Service and Ambience are average because we had take-away. We should not have bothered. The food was a throw-back to the 60s and 70s: limp vegetables, very tasteless meat and packet gravy, a redeeming feature: we did like the prawn-crackers.
My initial impression of Grain was that it seemed a bit dumpy. The array of choice on the menu was a bit overwhelming too (you can basically construct any meal you like from the ingredients on offer). My concerns all evaporated when the food arrived at our table. OMG, this is just "brilliant". Fresh crunchy vegetables, stunning presentation, large servings and just "yum"! We sat nearest to the kitchen door, and the parade of really nice looking dishes passing by on their way to other tables was just... "I want that... oh, and that... and that one... I want them all!!!"
Such a disappointment. Went there in search of a cheaper pyrmont birthday venue and really thought we had found the place thanks to lovely waitress. Unfortunately, the food was amongst the worst I have ever eaten, bland and warmed up stir fried noodles and an oyster ginger soy sauce that tasted like gravy. I would highly recommend not making the effort.
Since the last occasion we dined here management has clearly changed and the food has definitely gone downhill. The main reason we went this time- the pan fried dumplings- was a big disappointment. About half the size of the previous ones, not as tasty or juicy, and the dumpling skin wasn't cooked properly (inedible). The fried rice noodles did not appear to have been cooked in the wok as there wasn't even a hint of brown on the noodles and it was fairly bland. On the plus side, there was a decent amount of vegetable in the stir fry and it wasn't overcooked. Would not really recommend unless you are a local and convenience is a factor.
It's ok, it used to be my local but the quality isn't as good as what it once was. Also - one thing that really bothered me, were the number of cats in/around the doorway, the staff must be feeding them for them to hang around so much... that was really disgusting which made me almost lose my appetite!
SMH described their food as "exquistely simple" which is a good summary. It is reasonably priced and the decor provides for a pleasant dining experience.
A lot of Chinese restaurants load bicarb into their meat to give it a smooth texture but they have successfully avoided this.
Recommend: takeaway frozen dumplings $25/30. Works a treat when having dinner at home.
This restaurant has changed management recently. I've tried them twice and they're still doing my favourite dish - salt and paper squid - and they're doing it even better than before! My other favourite is sang choi bow (so fresh and tasty!). Chicken fried rice is really good too. Basically all their food are delicious and extremely good value. I highly recommend this restaurant for casual dining or takeaway.
If you like beef noodles soup and dumplings, you should try them in Grain. The taste of the beef noodle soup is great, usually I will tring the whole soup too ! Dumplings are handmade and taste is really difference than the one you bought from supermarket. I haven't tried the sweet and sour pork, but their fired Pork/Chicken is soft and tasteful.. It is worth to have a try !
