Went here tonight for a quick meal. I had the pan fried pork belly with apple sauce (I had a really late lunch) & my partner has some great sausages & other goodies. The Danish beer was impressively alcoholic but surpringly tasty. The highlight of the evening was chatting with the owner & having shots of Old Danish. The service was impeccable.
Went with a bunch of friends. I found the service to be pretty much spot on, although the place was fairly quiet, in that it was friendly, well timed and not overbearing. I had Spiced Herring as an entree which was well priced and tasty. The Danish Delight for mains was perfect winter comfort food, but overpriced for what is basically "Bubble and Squeak". Glogg is fantastic and well priced, and I found the atmosphere very comfortable and relaxed.
As Aussies, we're a bit spoilt for choice and availability of fresh food, and thus Scandinavian when treated authentically is going to be either disappointing or appreciated depending on your expectations. I had a great night and liked the food, but don't think it stacks up value-wise against similar experiences to be had at places elsewhere.
The food is great if you're into that northern european cuisine and yes, if you don't like meat and cold vege then go elsewhere. What do you THINK they have to eat over there, fresh mangoes?
The waitress, possibly the wife, was friendly enough to start with but when she found out we weren't eating much, my partner wasn't hungry so we just had a couple of entrees, her attitude changed to making us an irrelevant part of the room, we were the only people in there.
I really liked this sort of food and it's a pity that this place is a bit dingy and over priced. True, the dingyness is in keeping with classic european bars but it could be a bit brighter and inviting as a restaurant. I would go back but I'm not rushing.
My partner and I went to this restaurant and I have to say that the service was excellent. It was personal and it was as though you were eating with a danish family. The food was heavy on the meat side, but there was such a variety with the platter that it didn't matter because each serving tasted so different. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.
I didn't expect "gourmet" in the French restaurant sense because Danish cuisine is plain & doesn't usually attract that description. I like Scandinavian food & this place serves good Scandinavian food. The service was good in the no nonsense northern European fashion. A similar night in Copenhagen would be much more expensive than this. Four of us had 3 courses each, 4 Carlsberg beers, one Gin and Tonic and 2 litres of reasonable shiraz from the small selection available - all for $200.
This looked something a bit different so my wife and I decided to give it a go. When we started we were the only people in the restaurant, so naturally we received good service. I couldn't say the ambience was the best. There was some inoffensive music playing but with the front door open you are exposed to the noise of the traffic moving through Enmore Road.
Starters were very generous in size and not too bad to taste either. I had liver pate which was huge and a bit heavy going by the time I reached the end. My wife had one of the specials, scallops in a salad. Mains were probably the same size as the starters but to be honest we could not have eaten much more anyway. I had the pork sausages and my wife the meatballs. Both were pretty standard in quality, my sausages a little bit on the fatty side.
However, the sauce on the sausages was excellent and the accompanying vegetables were also pretty good.
The bill was probably a little bit steep considering what we ate, but overall a satisfying dinner. I wouldn't rush back but I wouldn't dismiss it either.
Went here for dinner with my partner and ordered the Viking platter for 2. It was $50 which is usually cheap for a mixed platter but this was predominantly cold cuts e.g. roast beef, salami, a few slices of sausage, silverside etc. There was no hot food on it and I could not call it a meal. Over priced for what you get and I would not return. The bill was $70 for the cold cut platter, 2 beers and a can of coke so, it's not outrageously expensive but the not value or quality.
Entree's are expensive for what you get, what I ordered was essentially a open sandwich for $10!! The mains size was smaller than expected, may try this place once more, to see if the next visit will change my mind of the place, it is something different after all.
Previous comments were very helpful so we chose the warm Viking pate - delicious ! I went for the pork sausages and these were excellent with an awesome gravy - the potatoes were a bit hard but hubby had the pork fillet with fried potatoes which were lovely. The Glogg mulled wine was great - slightly tart and very easy to drink. Good place to take a group of people - 7 of us had a great time despite being the only ones in the place !
This place is great. I went there with two others on a recent cold Saturday night and we had a great time. The wait-staff were friendly and happy to explain the menu items. The meals were reasonably priced, coming in at $50 each which included entrees, mains, deserts, beers and the glogg wine. The food was great, authentic Scandinavian food and we all left feeling quite full. The atmosphere was warm, a little on the dark side but quite pleasant.
The menu had a range of different delicacies, and I especially loved the smoked eel. The menus with little historical/mythological snippets on the back were interesting and spurred conversation. All in all, the place was just what you would expect and want. Seriously some of the earlier comments are pathetic. If you don't like a bit of lard or animal fat, why go to a place that serves Scandinavian food, the nature of the cuisine is roasted, boiled, smoked, pickled and preserved.
Similarly, if you want vegetarian, then why go to a restaurant that has a north European cuisine? You know its going to be lots of meat, with a few pickled or boiled vege's. Don't rate the place down because you won't eat animals, you can always graze out on the nature strip while I continue to enjoy the food inside. I'll definitely be going back.
