I remember when GPK restaurants first started appearing about 10yrs ago and it was like a revolution in pizza- fresh quality ingredients and unusual, absolutely delicious combinations cooked to perfection. Last weekend's trip to GPK felt like stepping into a slightly upmarket Pizza Hut. Don't get me wrong I am extremely tolerant of dining with small children but this was like stepping into a 5 year old's birthday party.
Kids were allowed to run riot, running up and down between tables, one child even stole our table card number and we were literally the only table without children. We felt very out of place in this family restaurant and it was difficult to carry on a conversation with so many children screaming and running around. My Australiana pizza was awful. The base was doughy and chewy, the topping oily. I couldn't even eat 2 slices as it was too rich and the flavours were all wrong. Our vegetarian pizza was equally awful and so overpriced for what these pizzas have become.
Yes, it does have an interesting array of flavoursome pizzas that are well cooked but at $20+ for a medium size pizza its not great value and there are LOTS of kids so its really for families only. I'd go there again but its not my first choice as there are quieter places that do as good pizzas.
I have eaten their Baghdad and New Orleans for at least 7 years and I can't fault them. They are the best pizzas in town...in fact, I moved to Cbr for a short while and whenever I returned to Chatswood, I would call in for a pizza 'fix'. Lovely staff too. If people want cheap pizza, go elsewhere...I think GPK's prices reflect their quality. Top place!!
Dinner at GPK Chatswood was nice, we were seated quickly, drinks ordered and delivered swiftly. Pizza's were a good size and very tasty. It was a bit noisy and sounds echoed (maybe due to the tiled floor??) so conversations were almost a yelling match at times. Also it took a while to get the waiters attention for more drinks, but they were quite busy, so that's understandable. Overall a good dinner experience, Much better than their one at Neutral Bay.
I'm not usually one to complain about restaurants but this place really disappointed. Despite the nice setup and impressive menu, the food was not up to scratch. You may say I'm critical but I do not tolerate bad food, especially when you are paying top dollar for it. I will pay any price for good food. I didn't mind the prices being so expensive food for what they claim to be gourmet pizzas. However, when the quality doesn't match the price, my blood begins to boil.
First of all, my wife's Caesar salad was pathetic, an arrangement of tired pieces of salad in a bland sauce with little bits of bacon, no crouton, no egg and no anchovies. An utter disgrace. We ordered three pizzas, that were oily, undercooked, had cheap ingredients and little meat on what was supposed to be a meat pizza. The anchovies on my pizza were the worst, cheapest grade you can buy (no texture, and lots of bones). The ingredients weren't even spread evenly around the pizza; there is no excuse for that. For the price we were paying, they should have served my higher quality food.
The service, even though this is no five star establishments, was pathetic. The first waiter, didn't look interested when taking our order and the second, not only forgot our drinks order but lied when we asked him where it was by saying he didn't take our order.
The food quality is very poor for the price you are paying and the service does not make up for that. I will never ever return to this place, and would rather pay twice as much to get a pizza DONE PROPERLY.
Pretty much what we have come to expect from GPK, having dined at their Kingsford restaurant numerous times. A casual family atmosphere, efficient service, a wide variety of pizza and pasta dishes to choose from (with an especially interesting and unusual selection of pizzas) and tasty, fresh food served in decent portions.
For a family restaurant tho, it has become a bit expensive. Our bill for three came to a tad under $80. For that we got one Caesar salad, a cheese and spinach twist entree, one pizza, one pasta, 3 drinks, one coffee and a one dessert.
The family-friendly environment does have it's downside though. It's very noisy! The tiled floors and wooden chairs and tables, don't help either.
Whilst we couldn't fault the service for speed and efficiency, we did find it a little too impersonal and brusque, given the rather hefty price-tag this place now commands.
We took the precaution of booking ahead, although this probably wasn't necessary as it was only about half full, being a quiet Sunday night. We found easy parking in the council car park further down Archer Street (across Victoria Av).
It's an easy place to take kids, so I guess we'll probably be back, but next time, we might just cut out the dessert to keep the bill down.
Was recommended as a family restaurant and it is surely that. We went at 5.30pm with my family of five and were already packed. Definitely child friendly, high chairs, pencils and pizza dough to play with. Food pretty good for pizza but it is not a cheap night out.
