I've dined here twice with a large group from work (16-18 people). First visit I was a bit underwhelmed by the food but last time (earlier this month) it was more like what I expected.
The service (as per many reviews) is only average, the waiters generally lack personality and don't know (or are not interested) in adding to your dining experience.
The ambience is also lacking (I'd never take my wife here). It all starts with the melee on the front steps where many groups are told to wait to be called (think Seinfeld episode ...). Price wise I was also glad the office was paying.
So, would I come here myself and pay, I don't think so. Yes, the seafood is fresh and generally very well cooked and seasoned, but I am after more from a trip to restaurant, and somewhere that falls short on service and ambience is never going to get me back.
Usually crowded. Service is excellent if you are a regular/know the management, otherwise it's so so. Went with someone who really knew management so we were a bit spoilt with extra mini-dishes and superb service.
Whole crab is always good (although tricky to eat), scallops were nice, as was the chicken and the simple veges in garlic sauce is refreshing. Steamed fish was tender and juicy.
A great place for a late night snack. We love their silky smooth cod fillet congee (available after 10 pm) with fried bread (which are never oily!). The last time we went we also had peking duck (2 courses). The first course was peking duck pancakes (fantastically crispy duck skin!) and the second course was fried noodles with duck. Ambience is okay for a chinese restaurant, although those tacky happy birthday tunes that they play for birthdays sure are annoying.
Totally overrated! I wouldn't mind the bad service if the food was as good as it's too often said to be. You'll get far, far better food (and service) at the much less pretentious BBQ King just down the street. Don't waste your time and money on Golden C.
A Sydney institution. Come to be insulted, ignored, and made to feel left out, and enjoy some fine chinese cuisine. Salt and pepper lobster is to die for, both for the taste and the price, but we keep going back for it. Great peking duck and XO pippis as well.
Over rated at best but downright rubbish would sum it up better. Food was average, service is an alien concept and the overall value was awful. I have no idea if the rave reviews I had heard were from an ancient history of the place, the joint would not be missed if it closed down tomorrow.
I must say that this is the best seafood restaurant in Sydney. The food is so fresh, we were invited there for a birthday and we had crab, lobster, prawns, and a few other dishes. The food is excellent, the service needs a bit of improvement though. The waiters need to smile a bit and understand when we need service, overall we like this place, if service improves this will be a regular.
We've been there 2 weeks ago, without any booking the so-unhelpful wait staff told us that we need to wait exactly 30 minutes. So, yes we wait coz we really want to try out this so called the most famous Chinese restaurant in city.
We order the mud crab with xo sauce n noodle, the crab was fresh but the way it cooked wasn't like it supposed to be. The noodle just being tossed simply, plain, honestly I can even cook the noodle better than them. And it was ridiculously overcharged! The mud crab, the noodle and the xo sauce had been charged separately even they were in the same plate ($50, $>10, $8 respectively), never experience this before! The simple small plate salt and pepper prawns being charged $30! (it wasn't even king prawn).
The only nice food that came across was steamed barramundi, it was very fresh and didn't have that smelly fishy thing like sometimes it has if it is not cook properly. But yeah, only that one menu. Last, the service was very worst, maybe low paid worker?!
Always come here after a late night out/meet parents for dinner after uni. Although ridden with MSG, the food is generally fresh/hot and authentic. The menu has great variety that can cater to those accustomed to asian flavours and those who prefer dishes traditionally liked by non-asians (e.g fried rice, salt and pepper prawns, spring rolls etc.).
However, the seafood dishes are the best. We always order a 1.2 kg lobster with XO sauce and noodles and usually get asked by another table what it is (much better than salt and pepper style). Service is only good if you are a regular. Waiters tend to be always rushing and sometimes come across as rude.
