We went here in a large group and when booking requested space for a pram (being local and knowing how busy they get every night we thought it would be prudent). They were very accommodating and had organised a large round table in the corner with sufficient space for the little one. So off to a good start for service already. The restaurant was very busy as usual (we walk past every night and it is always packed), however, service was still brisk and efficient with enough time to coo at our willing baby.
Now, onto the food. We had eaten here previously, however, there was only a few of us then. This time around in the large group we got to try quite a lot of the menu and we were all impressed. Flavours were authentic and there was not a single dish that did not make us umm and ahh at the food. The standouts were the satay sticks, kang kong vegetables, prawn entree, beef rendang. Even the plain sounding garlic chicken stir fry was delicious, so simple, yet so yummy.
Ice kachang is always a favourite to finish off with. Yes, it is a little pricey for Asian food, but it's definitely worth it. I have marked slightly low for ambience, but that's because it's a family restaurant, the decor is pretty average and there isn't much ambience...! You go there to eat, and eat well.
Highly recommended and we are definitely keeping this one on our list of regulars. Can't wait to go back again.
We discovered this restaurant over 3 weeks ago and have been there 3 times to try the various dishes! Being an ex-Malaysian I was impressed by the quality and authenticity of the dishes. The blachan beans and kangkong, beef rendang, loh bak, gula melaka sago and ice chendol are all recommended. The kechap manis squid was very tasty but as expected on the sweet side. The assam fish curry contained coconut cream and was not the tamarind base curry we expected but was still very tasty. We recommend this place to those who hunger for good authentic Malaysian food.
I won't bother going back here. The roti was soaking in oil, our table was given meat curry puffs instead of vege ones and the third main course arrived as we'd almost finished the other two. You can get better a Asian food experience elsewhere.
This hit the spot. Well worth the drive. My husband and I had been craving Singaporean food for weeks and we were richly rewarded when we went for dinner last week.
My favourites were the blachan vegetables, the mee goreng and the kway teow. The noodles had that smoky taste that I had only previously tasted in dishes cooked at the hawkers stalls back in Malaysia.
We also had the chicken rice, which again was excellent and authentic.
My only regret is ordering way too many dishes to leave room for dessert.
I thought it was good value for money. A little pricy but the decor, service and location were probably the reasons for the price premium. I will definitely return.
The food on the banquet menu is very satisfying and the portions were more than sufficient for the 4 of us. The sauces and curries were delicious and the satay was just divine. Now that I’ve tried both menus, I would say that the banquet menu is a lot more traditional, and tasty in its simple form. I was second time in this restaurant and recommended to all
Came here with a friend, a Neutral Bay local, who nominated this as her favourite restaurant in the area. It was definitely delicious, authentic Singaporean food, the squid was to die-for, the roti entree moreish, the chow fan very light. I'm a huge fan of Nonya cuisine and was definitely very impressed with the food. However, it was difficult to justify the pricing, dishes about $20 each when in Singapore I was eating the same thing for less than $5! I know it's hard to expect that quality in Sydney, but nonetheless it was expensive for asian cuisine.
The restaurant needs to fix itself up in terms of decor. It is merely functional with a strange sandstone facade at the front which is not asian at all. The tables were covered with this strange blue vinyl table-cloth which was very unappealing. Service is brisk and efficient and I was impressed that despite the queue of people they didn't try to rush us.
I would like to come back and try other items on the menu e.g. hainan chicken and possibly a curry. Just wish it was better value, and in better surrounds!
Hainan chicken was superb, normally its a 9.5, last week, unfortunately, only a 8, but still very good. Kang Kong is just great, tastes just like in Singapore. Chicken sate was tender and very good, but where's the little rice cakes and onions that usually go with it? Otak Otak tasted great, but two pieces for $18 is a bit expensive. Beef Rendang was not that great, a bit dry.
Dessert such as Bobo Chacha and Ice kachang were excellent. Summary: expensive, but hey this is neutral bay.
Been to this place about 5 times. One of my fav Asian places on the North Shore.
Positives: Food is very tasty. Best to go with 4-6 people so that you can try a few different types of dishes. Negatives: A touch on the pricey side. Service is relatively attentive but the kitchen really struggles when busy. Will definitely go again but will enjoy the experience more outside peak hours.
Btw, Tetsuya really does eat there. I saw him the other day when we were there and he had loads of leftovers he took home with him.
Nice Singaporean food that is reasonably priced, considering it's a comfortable and clean restaurant in the North Shore. Their Rendang is particularly nice. Finishing a meal with Ice Kacang and Sago Gula Melaka is very refreshing on a warm day. It's easy to overeat and walk out onto Military Rd feeling bloated.
Quite an expensive place to dine in. Like the Chicken rice but can't say much for the prawns cooked in supposedly singapore chilli crab sauce. Too sweet and starchy. Overall we enjoyed the meal, the sambal kangkung and assam fish.
Cannot be a frequent affair as it is too pricey.
