Overview
If good food and a fun time with friends are two of your favourite things, then Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ Restaurant is for you.
The fun begins when you choose the house specialty - Mongolian BBQ. You create your own truly unique meal from a range of fresh meats, crisp vegetables and delicious sauces, then watch the chef skilfully barbeque your food, toss it and flip it back onto your plate! The best news is that you can keep going back for more as many times as you like. Perfect for those with a healthy appetite!
If you're not feeling creative, Genghis Khan also offers an extensive a la carte menu, featuring a full range of Chinese dishes including spring rolls, fried rice, sizzling Mongolian beef, fantastic seafood and vegetarian dishes. Plus everyone's favourite - fried ice cream.
Not knowing what to eat for dinner my boyfriend and I thought we might try the Mongolian BBQ, not thinking much of it we went upstairs to experience a very entertaining night. The unique BBQ restaurant offers four types of meat, a variety of fresh vegetables and lots of sauces that we can mix and match to our liking.
Being able to watch our food being cooked before us was very cool! I think it would be a great family experience for people who enjoy their Asian food! I would definitely go back!
My time spend here was much enjoyed. I had a b'day party here with 18 guests and it was fantastic! Every person could either eat off the menu or have all you can eat stir fry with any combination of vege, meat noodle or rice when ever you are ready to eat. You then get to watch them cook your concoction which was a novelty that added to our fun night. Each person could also buy their drinks separately from the bar making the bill much easier to spilt. A really great venue for large relaxed groups. Not for fine diners.
I have only had the barbecue option and I notice on the night we went regardless of the size of the groups nearly everyone went for the barbecue. It's a good theatrical experience, basically an all you can eat barbecue. A Mongolian version of Teppanyaki. The food was alright without being special.
Late one friday night, this was the only open place in chatswood, so not exactly our first choice of restaurant. Their supposed banquet combo was such a let down, starters+unlimited mains (stir fried noodles)+sides for about $30-$35 per person. Starters were salted peanuts (looked like from coles) and sides were steamed rice!! Only possible rescue was the unlimited stir fry, which was not exactly tasty material.
Further, the service was unprofessional. To top it all off, the guy behind the enclosed glass area started spraying water on the walls, I guess for cleaning. This went on for about half an hour! All that water going to waste, that too on the walls!! This experience has put me off what could possibly be delicious mongolian/korean bbq experience.
Best thing about this place is you get to watch the novelty of a guy behind an enclosed glass area cooking what you picked and slotting the cooked food into a bowl in one swift motion. Once you've seen that 2 or 3 times, you begin to realise how every bowl tastes about the same despite the fact that you chose different, watered down condiments each time to go with the pieces of frozen meat.
They tend to usher people to try the buffet more than the a la carte. Saves them the trouble of serving anything. They gave one glass when my table of six asked for water although they promptly got another 5. Yet, nothing can rescue this place from the fact that the supposed main draw disappoints so much in terms of taste. I tend to have low expectations for buffets. Yet, when your pork tastes like your lamb, which tastes like your beef, which basically tastes like soy sauce, you can't help but feel like you threw away 20 bucks to have someone else instead of your pet goat "cook" disappointing "asian". Not to mention the fact that you are the one who has to serve yourself as well. I had a better "Mongolian" BBQ the last time I burnt some toast.
I have never had anything from the menu, only the Mongolian BBQ where you choose your own ingredients out of a buffet bar style table, then take your bowl to a bank teller style window where two chefs cook a bowl each for a couple of minutes. It was very entertaining watching the chefs toss the food around. They were completely enclosed in their teller room and no wonder, a lot of the food ended up on the floor and some on the enclosing glass room itself!
That was fun to see, but that's where the enjoyment ended. The food tasted like a homemade asian food experiment gone wrong. The meat was tough and even though I chose different ingredients each time both bowls tasted exactly the same. This figures, as everyones ingredients being cooked on the same plates. If you didn't choose chilli sauce whilst putting your ingredients into your bowl, too bad, you get it anyway if someone else had it!
There were too many people having the BBQ which made choosing your ingredients slow & then waiting forever to get it cooked by the chefs - there ended up being a very long line.
The soft drinks were extremely watered down.
It was interesting experiencing it, but I'm never going back.
I have to say that is the worst restaurant I have ever had in my life so far. Actually this is my first time for me to write a review because I really feel disappointed about the food. The food seems a bit expensive for me as I am concerning the quantity and quality of the dish. Also the staffs seem unwelcome.
Meanwhile, I am totally upset about the environment because I pay for such prices, but the environment is not good, the decoration, the style does not reflect any Mongolian style at all. Well, all the comments seem negative; in short, I do not recommend this restaurant for you as there are many Chinese restaurants in Chatswood which better food and service with reasonable prices.
Its probably better if you give this place a miss but if you do end up having food there don't ever have the BBQ buffet. They claim to have 8 fresh vegies, but that's far from the truth.
The meat is frozen. The "side dishes" advertised to be free with the bbq turned out to be pickled cabbage and roasted peanuts (and they tasted like they've left in the out for a while)!! I just can't imagine how they can justify $22.90 for that. Absolute shame.
Went there on a Saturday night for buffet dinner and ended up leaving the place feeling really dissatisfied. It's probably better to order mains rather than go for the buffet.
One thing that's good is service - staff are quick to cater to your needs. Watching the chefs cook your meal is quite a unique experience, but at the end of the day it's the quality of the food that matters. When there are a lot of people waiting in line, the chefs are sloppy with the cooking process and end up giving you food that still requires a bit more time on the hot plate. Every bowl of food ends up tasting annoyingly similar and there is just no variety in taste/texture/quality.
Stay away from the deep fried ice cream - instead of crumbled cake, the exterior is plain white slice bread. They don't even bother to cut the crusts off.
I don't think this place was value for money - buffet and dessert for two ended up costing $60, when it was really worth about $15(max) pp.
I really enjoy going to this place. I love the fact that you can put your own ingredients so there should be really no reason to complain about the food. They have good variety of fresh ingredients so you can make your meal as tasty as you like. It is also a very good sign when you can see your food while it is being cooked and that adds fun to the whole experience. The service is good as well and the price is quite reasonable for the amount of food you can get when you go for the barbeque option. I'll keep going back.
