Went here for a long Sunday lunch with my boyfriend the other week. We were in the neighbourhood in the hope of finding Frattini open- no luck there, but Gelbison looked warm and busy so we gave it a go instead.
We had a great meal and enjoyed every moment. Loved the mussels in tomato and garlic almost as much as the delicious bread that we mopped them up with. Despite eyeing-up the risotto the couple at the next door table was eating, we both followed up with seafood pasta. I chose the marinara; he had a crab special. We almost managed to finish everything and left hours later feeling fat and happy.
I was surprised to read other's comments about poor service. On the Sunday afternoon that we were there, we were competing for attention with a large family birthday party of about 30 people (seated indoors- we decided to stick to the outdoor area). It's a credit to Gelbison that their service was still quick and friendly throughout. Sadly, there are a lot of average Italian restaurants in Leichhardt. This wasn't one of them, so we'll be back.
Very sad experience at Gelbison, the service was o.k but the waiter kept coming to our table with the wrong orders about four times in total. Once I got my pizza was disappointed to say the least, it tasted very fatty and kept tasting that way for hours after. Sorry but won't be going back again.
Have been there twice in the last 2 weeks, the pastas had no real taste (we ordered 5 varieties). The Pizzas were better than the pasta, but not the best as some claim. Service was good and value reasonable.
We went to Gelbison on a fairly busy Saturday night, and ate in the semi-outside area which we thought would be quieter....which it was. Service was pretty good throughout, especially the lady from Thailand, and we enjoyed a comfortable dinner. Very nice bruschetta, and tasty though rather thick minestrone.
Three of us enjoyed some very nice chicken and veal main courses, though my friend was not overly impressed with his lasagne, which was a bit oily and lacking in meat content. No-one tried the pizzas, though they certainly looked good on the table next to us. Pricing is reasonable, and our overall experience was good. Would go again.
Horrible experience, will never go back here!! Food was ok, rest was terrible. The noise level was so bad that my partner & I did not talk throughout the whole meal, service was very average and we could not wait to get out of there.
We go to Gelbison on a weekly basis, normally in a group. The food is lovely, we normally have the mussels in tomato, and garlic and cheese pizza for entree, its got to be the best I've ever had, when we get there now we don't even look at the menu as we know what we want. lol. The pastas are also awesome, the Gnocchi would have to be as close as identical to how my Italian family make them and I'm saying this as I'm extremely fussy being a chef by trade.
The service would only be the downside, due to italian wait persons whos english skills are very limited, don't get me wrong they try their best and luckily for us we always have an italian speaking person dining in our group, but I think I would feel for those who don't. Anyhow in all I highly recommend Gelbison's! The food quality is great, and definitely value for money and I'll be back again on friday night to celebrate my birthday.
One of the better pizzeria's in Sydney! I've done my rounds, and this pizza really hits the spot. Priced well, service acceptable and pizza that is the bomb! Get your taste buds down to this place you won't be disappointed.
Tried this restaurant last week and will definitely be a regular. Loved it overall, fantastic food, pizza's are the best. Pizza man was also very entertaining as he spun the dough up in the air, caught it and turned it into a great pizza.
They make their own home made bread which was delicious. Desserts are also yum, we had tiramisu and a creme brulee, yum, yum! Definitely worth trying, can be busy and noisy but who cares when your belly is happy so are you.
I have eaten at Gelbisons about 5 times in the past 3 years and have always thoroughly enjoyed it. It has outside tables and a nice relaxed atmosphere. They have really interesting specials and make a good coffee. I must take the boyfriend there again as I haven't been for ages. This place does get quite hectic but I think the staff handle it very well. If you like nice authenitc italian food at pretty good prices, I highly recommend Gelbisons, they certainly put other, much hyped up establishments around the corner in Norton Street to shame.
