Went there last month on the Queen's Birthday long weekend. I found the food were generally good and yes, they were big servings. The only drawback is the place, very crammed and crowded. Oh well...I guess it was part of the experience. I will definitely go back there again.
This place was a really good find. Quick service and friendly. The food was great, my friends and I each had the mixed seafood grilled platter and it was delicious and fresh. We'll certainly be going back.
This place is amazing. We've now been for dinner (x4), for breakfast (x1) and for lunch (x1). The food is incredibly good - no matter what you seem to order tastes delicious. The servings are generous (turn food down all day so you have room) and the service is attentive and with a light smattering of humour.
Our breakfast experience involved staying for four hours (during which we were constantly eating and drinking) and walking out with a bill of $20 each.
It's a new local favourite. The only down side might be if you're entertaining elderly rellies it can get a little buzzy and clattery at night. Otherwise go for it.
I have eaten here three times, brunch, lunch and dinner. Brunch was really good, my partner and I had a banana and mango smoothie. It was absolutely huge and I could only drink half, very milky. I have the chorizo omelette which was really yummy but a little heavy so I couldn't finsih it all. The garnishes of fresh fruit (orange, passion fruit, rockmelon, kiwi) is a great touch esp when passion fruits are $2+ each!
Lunch was okay had the bruschetta and pumpkin soup. Staff is accommodating but have wierd personalitites which can be annoying but they are trying, as least they aren't being rude. Dinner was good. I'm not a big oyster fans but they serve the best oysters! Fresh with a beautiful wasabi soy dipping sauce YUM! I had the scallops for entree which were very good. For main my partner had the blue eyed cod which he said was delicious.
I had the oven baked baby snapper which was a bit dry and bland. I also had the cheesecake for dessert which was good as well. The waiter entertained us with some (bad) jokes. But overall, Fundamental fish serves good food, has an eccentric staff but who are efficient and friendly, so what can be wrong with that? Some dishes may be hit and miss but overall food is quality.
I have been there a couple of times after a friend who lived in Balmain gushed about it somewhat. Both times were for dinner, and I note many other comments being about lunch or breakfast and seating and ambience etc. The service seemed reasonable and they seemed to recall my friend who had been there before. However, it is relatively Balmain prices for relatively ordinary fish, all presented in the same fashion, boring lettuce salad and that sliced orange that somebody else mentioned.
For the same prices you can get much more interesting fish, and certainly more interesting accompanying and varied salads, at Mohr Fish, which does a simple basic fish bar much better than this place. I convinced my friend on the last occasion that we did not really need to go there again. Better options elsewhere is the story.
This is a funny place. I'm not sure what it's trying to be. A cafe? Bar? Sandwich shop? Restaurant? It's all a bit odd, with the cramped tables, billboard of sandwiches and blackboards of fish specials.
Don't let that put you off though. If you're looking for great fish cooking at reasonable prices, in the evening this is the place to go. We had some sensationally cooked fish and seafood here - perfectly moist barramundi steak, beautiful tuna, flavoursome prawns.
It's just that the ambience is a bit odd. We had a very bizarre experience when, at the end of the meal, the waiter insisted I had to change my chair for a stool, as that was what they used in the evening. This was when we had finished eating and would clearly be leaving shortly. I've never been asked to relinquish my chair in a restaurant before...
We subsequently went back and had lunch there, and again got nicely prepared sandwiches and wraps. So it's a place to go for the food. They just need to work on the ambience - and perhaps decide once and for all what vibe they are trying to achieve!
Went here for dinner. Even though I knew it was a cafe, I still expected something a bit more dinner like... it's not. It's a cafe with dim lighting for dinner. The waiters were very polite, but it was disappointing that they forgot our shared entree, so we cancelled it.
The mains were great. The plate was too small, but it was all cooked magically. It seemed like perhaps an Asian influence? For fish - the prices were very reasonable. About $25 for a main course.
Went for breakfast. Serving size's are very generous and good value. Food was well prepared and had great flavour. Finally a decent breakfast in Balmain.
I have been here 3 times and it just keeps getting better - yes some of the garnish's are a little cheesey as per the other reviews but for $21 for a mains prawn dish with a mountain full of prawns who really cares - the sizzling seafood plate is beautiful and the platter at 39.95 per head is definitely what I'm gonna give a try next.
