This is the first time I have ever felt the need to leave a comment. The six of us could not believe how bad this place was. The meals lacked any real taste. The asparagus entree ($18.50) was embarassing - 3 wilted pieces, no time had even gone in to the presentation. The 3 scollops on the skewer were drowning in bechamel sauce. Mains were really pitiful as well. The spatchcock was tasteless and had obviously been thrown into the deep frier, We will not be returning.
Went there with a group of 13 and I think everyone enjoyed their meal. Especially enjoyed their ricotta and spinach dumplings, the house special. The Osso Buco was more than I could finish and very tasty. The complimentary lemoncello was a nice touch at the end. From talking to my fellow diners the entree size pastas would pretty much do for a main at most other restaurants. The only drawback to the restaurant was the service, it was a bit slow and haphazard at times.
Restaurant ambience and service was really good, food, however, was a big disappointment. We ordered the scallops which were on a skewer with the nasty roe still attached tasted like they were frozen and were over slathered in a rich cream sauce. The spaghetti marinara also contained frozen seafood which looked pink in colour. The dumplings were quite tasty and the mussels were a bit bland but not chewy which is a plus although the serving was rather small.
Overall food let us down for this visit but we are willing to give this place another go and order something from the menu that doesn't contain seafood (meals on surrounding tables looked delicious).
Frattini is a rather charming looking building located on Marion Street - one of Leichardt's main arteries when it comes to the lifeblood of food in the area. Upon entering, we had to wait at least 5 minutes, standing in the middle of the front dining room before we were even acknowledged. (I tend to minus points when I'm made to stand like shag on a rock whilst the rest of the diners are thinking "What are they doing, just standing there?")
That aside, once we were seated and bread brought to the table, we found that we had neither plates nor cutlery to eat them with. Were we to just break the bread and then whack it on the table? Anyone? Bueller?
On to the main event. If you like your food:
a) over salted
b) dripping in oil
c) over-cooked or
d) smothered in so much cream you start to wonder if your heart will survive the meal
e) all of the above
Then you're in luck. Frattini might just be what you're looking for.
Food crimes abound in the entree course: Aside from taking delicately flavoured ingredients such as Zucchini flowers, and Sea Scallops and (figuratively) stomping all over them by drenching them in either too much oil or too much cream, the Poached Oyster Mushrooms in Chilli and Garlic resembled a filmy soup of overcooked mushrooms floating in a vat of oil.
Hoping for a more promising main course of Prawns Al Sugo (cooked in a tomato-based sauce), Grilled, Baby Barramundi, Veal Bosciola and Stuffed Veal Skewers, we waited for more than half an hour until these were served.
Suffice to say that I was rather surprised to find a child-sized wading pool-worth of oil sitting underneath the overcooked (though not devoid of taste) veal. The Barramundi itself, which should have been firm, was soft and melting in texture, not a good thing when the fish in question is by definition a firm-fleshed one (this is a sign of extended freezing).
To boot, this harrowing tale of bad food set us back over $250 for 5 people prompting some of us to wonder why we didn't just flush the cash down the toilet and saved the hassle.
We were a table of 8 and service was timely and professional. Apart from the noisy ambience, which was appropriate for a bustling Italian eatery, I had no problems. The level of noise was at times fairly significant which meant I mainly spoke to the person next to me, but she was nice so it was fine by me.
As it got late and the place became half full, it was perfect. The food was around 7-8 of 10; I had the Osso Bucco which was a decent flavour and texture but not a masterpiece. We were the third last table to leave at 23.30 on a Tuesday and there was no perceptible push. Overall a pretty good experience.
This was a big disappointment...food was very ordinary and I thought overpriced. I know everyone has opinions, well in my opinion it would have to be the worst restaurant I have ever been to and I wouldn't go back there even if it was free, simply a waste of a good evening.
Despite the varied reviews on this site, we had dinner (8 people) on Saturday evening. We booked for 8pm, and were promptly shown to our table, at the back of restaurant. It seemed that every other table was already occupied when we arrived.
It crossed my mind that the service might thus be slow, but our waitress quickly sorted out drinks and menus, and we ordered about 8:20.
Our entrees arrived promptly, and most were very good. The whitebait fritters, scallops and vegetable risotto were particularly good. I had the field mushrooms, which were a bit disappointing...just 3 small grilled plain mushrooms and a few lettuce scraps.
Mains were similarly prompt, and not one of our group had any complaints about their food, which included 2 seafood dishes, veal shanks, schnitzel, and my very tasty veal pamigiano.
Our waitress was excellent - always seemed to be there when we needed her, and was very efficient and pleasant to deal with. We thought that it was overall good value - zero corkage, complimentary bread and vegetable plates with the mains.
The only downside was that it was very noisy, and so hard to converse to anyone not right next to or opposite you. Partly this was due to one very loud nearby table, and also because we were in the smaller area at the rear of the restaurant. Overall, a good experience, and good value.
I know these ratings are very subjective, but I felt I had to add my own comments when I saw someone else had given it all 1's. We like Frattini's! When we lived in the inner city, we would go once a month. Now we live in the Mountains, we go less often, but every opportunity we get.
One telling incident was when we drove past at about 11:30 one Monday morning, thinking "I wonder if they're open for lunch". They were! The place was half full and buzzing with locals and regulars. Not bad for a place that's a bit away from the main part of town! Some things are better than others. We often just order a selection of entrées: whitebait fritters, ricotta dumplings w/ gorgonzola sauce, beef carpaccio. For a reasonably priced restaurant, it is highly recommended and good value.
I like to try new food places, and Frattinis looked very cute and authentic. I took a guest staying with me out wanting to introduce them to one of the many lovely dining places in Leichhardt. Unfortunately, Frattinis reminded me why I always should try, before I take guests. Food, seafood that was off to the point of inedible, granted that put me in a bad mood but the other dishes were pretty plain in a home economics in year 7 type of way.
Service, mediocre at best, Price, my theory is out of the three (Food, Service, Price) you have to have two to make it a place you revisit. It wasn’t screamingly cheap. If you frequent it and it works for you, great! (some people must go there because they asked if we had a booking) so go enjoy. But to new comers I wouldn’t go unless you want to spend the evening annoyed that you wasted a perfectly good eating opportunity on this place.
