Despite being recommended by a friend, our first visit left us very disappointed and we won't be back. The decor and ambience is lovely and its BYO, but that's the only good things to say about it. The service was ordinary. Our waiter/waitress were too busy to bother with friendliness. The entrees were good, but mains were terrible.
My partner finished his lamb kebab but I hardly touched by spaghetti marinara. It was dry and the seafood didn't taste fresh. They ran out of the dessert we wanted and weren't too apologetic about it either. Prices were average, but when you don't finish your meal, any price is too high.
I too have been duped by the busy-ness of this restaurant, and always forget how underwhelming it is. Four visits equalling four meals I'll never have back. Terrifyingly rude waitress aggressively delivering very ordinary food. The cream on the scallops is to disguise the lack of quality of the (frozen?) seafood. A good scrub of the grill may have assisted the spatchcock. I'm not a fan of giving a bad review. This restaurant, however, is (strangely enough) busy enough to withstand it.
Came here last night with a bunch of friends. I have to say service was wonderful lovely lady offering all the attention and service in the world. I have to agree that the entrees are rather over done. The asparagus was dripping in oil and the zucchini flowers were extremely oily. The white bait fritters were nice. We had a platter of pasta and I have to compliment them on delicious pasta.
The Siciliana was exactly like being in Sicily! The spinach and ricotta fussili were delicious but the ragu was the show stopper. Delicious tender bits of melt in your mouth meat. If you want my advice skip entree and order pastas. You won't be disappointed!
We had a pleasant night here and it was hard to book. The service was wonderful and they had an extensive menu for entree, pasta and main meals. The mussels were beautiful, but I felt there wasn't a wide range of desserts.
I have to concur with the reviewer below and the bullet-point summary of the quality of the food, particularly the overcooked option. I, too, fell into the trap of seeing this venue being very crowded and naturally thought it would be a good quality dining experience. Similar to another reviewer I took along a visiting friend.
It's embarrassing when you find yourself apologising for your choice of restaurant. What we experienced was tasteless, bland and uninteresting food. The service was rushed and the noise of surrounding chatter was deafeningly loud. Some people might call that 'ambience' but I don't. Very, very disappointing.
Despite some of the reviews below we tried Frattini the other night with friends. What a wonderful experience! I have never eaten in such a friendly, fun-filled environment. We were seated promptly and I was happy to break bread in my hands, after all that's how it's done in Italy.
The waiter was friendly, attentive, and helpful. The lamb shanks were to die for, hearty and with a beautiful flavour. A friend had the scallops which were fresh and beautifully presented.
I saw none of the 'over-oiled, over salted' meals that others have complained about. Frattini serves hearty, Italian family style cooking, not pretentious morsels of modern Australian nothingless.
There were a few birthdays on the night, and I loved how the waiters dimmed the lights, bought out cakes and lead the singing so the whole restaurant joined in wishing happy birthday to the various guests. What a fantastic atmosphere! It was loud as others have pointed out but it was still easy to talk across the table.
And to top it all off, the restaurant is BYO with no corkage so no $20 added to the bill to wash 4 glasses. Dinner was around $50 per head for three courses which was spectacular value for money, especially bearing in mind what I've spent at other Italian restaurants in the area.
This is the first time I have ever felt the need to leave a comment. The six of us could not believe how bad this place was. The meals lacked any real taste. The asparagus entree ($18.50) was embarassing - 3 wilted pieces, no time had even gone in to the presentation. The 3 scollops on the skewer were drowning in bechamel sauce. Mains were really pitiful as well. The spatchcock was tasteless and had obviously been thrown into the deep frier, We will not be returning.
Went there with a group of 13 and I think everyone enjoyed their meal. Especially enjoyed their ricotta and spinach dumplings, the house special. The Osso Buco was more than I could finish and very tasty. The complimentary lemoncello was a nice touch at the end. From talking to my fellow diners the entree size pastas would pretty much do for a main at most other restaurants. The only drawback to the restaurant was the service, it was a bit slow and haphazard at times.
Restaurant ambience and service was really good, food, however, was a big disappointment. We ordered the scallops which were on a skewer with the nasty roe still attached tasted like they were frozen and were over slathered in a rich cream sauce. The spaghetti marinara also contained frozen seafood which looked pink in colour. The dumplings were quite tasty and the mussels were a bit bland but not chewy which is a plus although the serving was rather small.
Overall food let us down for this visit but we are willing to give this place another go and order something from the menu that doesn't contain seafood (meals on surrounding tables looked delicious).
