Went here for yum-cha, very good food and very authentic. The service here is not all that great, most look very bored. Make sure you get there early as it can get very crowded.
Food is good, if a little pricey. The place is always busy, hence service is brusque to say the least. Every time I've been there have been lots of family groups, which is fine but does mean the background noise is in the high decibel range
I went to saturday lunch, service is poor and dessert is not well cook. I don't want to go back any more, I love yum cha but this restaurant is most worst test.
This is the best yum cha in Sydney. The variety is good and it is very authentic, unlike ones in the city where it is westernised. Good to get there a little bit early on weekends eg 12 or else you could be waiting for over 30 minutes!
Being no stranger to Yum Cha for the past 34 years, and having had copious amounts of it from San Francisco to Singapore, from old Hong Kong to old Saigon, and from Dixon Street to Little Lonsdale Street, none has impressed my palate as much as that coming, fresh and steaming, from the kitchens at Fook Yuen. It is indeed first-class, memorable gourmet yum-cha that I would not hesitate to describe as the best in the (known) world.
Proof is definitely in the 'pudding' or, correctly, in the eating of it. Further proof is the queue waiting for tables at 11.15 am and there is a seemingly never-ending sea of tables. There are reservations taken on weekends, and no mercy shown to those who can't get there by 10.30. Come one, come all, but get in early for the greatest, freshest, yum-cha of your life.
Excellent staffing- very prompt and polite- best out of all the Chinese restaurants around the North Shore/ CBD.
Food has been of high standard especially value for money of yum cha lunches, however has declined steadily over the years presumable because of a change in chefs? very oily nowadays and difficult to find a dish that is slightly less oily.
Ambience is better than other restaurants except they need to upgrade the chairs or change the upholstery.
I have been a regular to Fook Yuen restaurant and would recommend it to those who lives near the area. However, if you compare Fook Yuen to those restaurants in the city, it is incomparable. Thus I only recommend it to locals who are too busy to go dining in the city. My only complain about this place is their lack of respect towards their customers as their service is really really bad.
Me and my family have been there for the past 10 years or so. We have recommended it highly to many of our friends. Doing special occasion type function is great since the managers are very helpful. Yum cha during lunch is great as well. However they tend to serve different dishes during different times, so you might sometimes have to stay the whole 2 hours or so to try the vast array of yum cha dishes.
I recommend it highly both for dinner and night. Their seafood is always good, the managers will tell you what is the best seafood they have and recommend you what is actually fresh and in season so that you are not ripped off or be disappointed. Just be aware, if you are not Chinese, you might have to cope with waitresses who might not be as prompt, but most of the times, they are very helpful and friendly. I will always call this a great place for a casual dinner or an organised occasion like a wedding or birthday!
Obvioulsy some people are very disappointed with Fook Yuen but my opinion of this is I actually think it's a veryy good restaurant. While reading all this I feel very disappointed with people saying it's bad. Most likely exaggerating things. Me myself isn't Chinese neither Asian, I am pure Australian. I've been to Fook Yuen for now about 8years because of someone telling me how bad it was, I went and tried but I realised everything was either exaggerated or not true.
Fook Yuen has the best dim sums and dishes ever! The best I've tasted in Sydney. The waiter and waitresses are although maybe old, middled age or young. People have to understand that it is very hard for them to speak English and have a smile on their faces if they do not understand what you are saying. Also I've seen the waiter and waitresses be very friendly. Not as bad as people say they are.
Also talking about dinner it is the best, the dishes are great and tasty. Also to mention about service if you say all those bad stuff aboiut the service then you can go trying it out yourself to see if it's easy for you. The manager there is very nice and friendly.
