I was really looking forward to our meal here after reading the reviews but was quite disappointed with the quality of the food. We shared the game terrine which was tasty but our mains didn't meet the mark. My Partner's orecchiette was undercooked, it needed atleast another two minutes so quite chewy, the sauce was also too salty.
My main, the Blue Eye Cod was better, a tad overdone and also salty, and the portion was as small as the entree. Still more enjoyable then my partner's meal. We both ate the pasta but couldn't bring ourselves to finish it. We also had a half carafe of wine which was selected for us, this went done very well.
Service was friendly and prompt, next time I will only be back for drinks. All up if I didn't have the entertainment card, the meal would have costed $110, not happy to pay what we did for food as it was just not up to the mark.

I’d heard rave reviews about this place, but it was disappointing. First, my online booking wasn’t confirmed for 3 days, and I had to follow up by phone on the day we wanted to come. While they had the online booking, I’d suggest phone bookings for an immediate answer. The menu was small and is available online, which I very much liked. There is quite a bit of seafood on the menu but there were a couple of other options.
I ordered the tagliata, and was told it ‘comes rare’. I know skirt steak shouldn’t be overcooked as it’s a tougher cut of meat, however when I requested that it was medium the waitress said that she’d ‘try’ to get the chef to do it. The presentation was unappetising, a mountain of lettuce smothered in parmesan. They did offer to replate this for me (not a fan of that much parmesan), but only when chased I down the waitress. The steak was bloody (I guess the chef didn’t feel like cooking to order) although the crispy potato hiding underneath the mess of lettuce was delicious and crunchy, although a little cold and oversalted.
My friend ordered the rainbow trout in a bag, which she said tasted delicious, although she spent most of the meal fishing bones out of her mouth. The menu could do with a bit more detail about the dishes, or the staff could have proffered more information – parmesan, whole trout - that sort of thing. We ordered a bowl of hand cut chips, and some were cold and some were hot, and also very oversalted.
Service was inattentive, although they did get busy toward the end of our meal, which may have been why the waitress put down the desert sheets onto our table, which had quite a bit of parmesan over it, without making any attempt at a clean-up. We weren’t offered more drinks and we weren’t asked once if we enjoyed our meal.
The entertainment card made it better value at around $60 – but regular price would have been closer to $100 for two mains, a bowl of chips and two softdrinks. The tagliata would have been minimal preparation and cost, yet priced at $33 – however the trout seemed like better value in terms of labour and cost when priced at $35.
They have an extensive wine list, and you don’t have to order a meal if you just want to have a drink. Perhaps it works better as an evening wine bar?

After reading the reviews I decided to try Fix St James for dinner on a Friday night. Ambience was lacking for a Friday night dinner with friends. It seems more suited for business lunches or business dinners. Service was great. Food was tasty but my lamb ragu was too salty.

Great experience. I couldn't fault the service. I love it when the water comes to the table as soon as you sit down. Timing between courses was perfect. Food? Stunning, my smoked eel was out of this world and my wife's chicken was cooked to perfection, the skin was fantastic. Its noisy, so speak up when you go.

Seriously one of the best food & wine experiences going in Sydney for a while now. Unpretentious service, simple but very delicious italian influenced food and an approach to wine that is unique in Sydney.
Go here, don't order a la carte, just go for the 'Fix Me Up' sharing menu with 'Vinous Journey' (matched wines). If you let Stuart & his team have their way, they will push your perceptions about wine and you'll drink some unusual, but truly, truly delicious wines. I can't fault them, every visit has been stellar.

October is my favourite time of the year due to the Sydney International Food Festival. I already had a couple of Let’s Do Lunch booked. To kick off the month we went to Fix St James Wine Bar & Restaurant for its Esk Valley free-range suckling pig.
The meat was tender and was perfectly balanced by the salad and tangy juices. Portion size was decent. My friends enjoyed the light Brown Brothers red wine which came with the meal. Service was friendly which was perfect for a working lunch.
Will definitely come back for a full meal next time!

We had the risotto and the steak tagliata for lunch today and it was breathtakingly fantastic. I go out a fair bit, but my recent Rockpool and Spice Temple experiences were blown out of the water by the incredible risotto. The chips were also amongst the best in recent times and the steak very tasty. Service provided a good wine recommendation and was quick with water and bill, but not outstanding. Clearly the best $45 spent in a long time!

The Beef salad with roast potatoes is absolutely delicious! I've been back twice now, my boyfriend and I getting the same thing both times and both loved it.
Owner of the business is very friendly and attentive, he had a chat with us on our first dining experience and gave us great advice on the food as well as places to go for a few drinks afterwards. Second time round they were a bit busier, so we didn't get the same personalised service but none the less everything was still great!

This place is around the corner from where I work and after a few disappointing destinations, I finally found Fix St James. I found this in the Gold section of my dining guide and have been back about 10 times in the last 2 months. I think I've told most people I know. For me the big hit is the Tagliata. Simple, delicious and consistent. Decided I need to broaden my culinary horizons so will go back on Friday for a long legal lunch and try the "Quick Fix". Can't fault it!
