Finally a yum cha restaurant that has more style than the big hangars like Kam Fook and better service than Chinatown hawkers style restaurants. Food was tasty, you could taste prawns in sesame prawn rolls, pork in pork bun and they had freshly shucked oysters thanks to the convenience of a fish market one level down.
Service was the real highlight though, staff were untypically friendly for a yum cha restaurant that we were surprised when manager came and asked how we enjoyed everything half way through our yum cha. Very family friendly had three monsters with us still yet staff was most accommodating, will definitely be back.
C'mon, Eatability reviewers. 6.6 average for this place? You cannot be serious. Maybe the night we went (we have been to yum cha here before and it was pretty good - was too lazy to do a review though) was one right there out of the bag on the meanest, thinnest, clinging on for dear life end of the bell curve. I feel sorrow for you folks and your bad experiences.
We started with market oysters (steamed with ginger and shallots). They were huge, they were tasty. The waiter placed them one by one on our plates as we disposed of each juicy, tender oceanic orgasm. Sorry, got a bit carried away there. The waiter even suggested that we should drink the left over jus from the shell. We did, it was good. Well, if that was an entree, bring on the mains.
We ordered prawns, a tofu dish, and a choi sum vegetable dish. The taste was good. The dishes were served at a good pace ... just before we finished one plate, another would appear. Delicious!
Now, the service. I read all you guys go on about the 1.5 hour wait for soft drinks and the waiters not knowing what they were doing. We must have hit a purple patch. We asked for some chilli oil, and immediately our man was off on a mission. His return journey was interrupted by him having to serve a dish to one of the tables between the chilli oil source and our table. He put down the oil, served the other table, came directly to our table on completion, and apologised for the delay. I must say, that was pretty much straight out of the customer service manual.
Value? Hey, it was a little on the pricey side, but the food and atmosphere were good. The service was good. And considering it was late (8.30pm) on a Sunday evening, the place was reasonably full (mostly Asian customers too ... a good sign, surely). As long as people read these other reviews and steer clear of Fisherman's Wharf Seafood Restaurant, I am more than happy that at least I know I will have a better chance of getting a table there when I want, and know that I should be in for a treat. Hopefully, we will not be on top of the bell curve next time.
I went on Saturday with 4 Adults and we got away with spending $100 with Soft drink and tea. The yum cha is fresh and the dishes are quite traditional. Good service and highly recommended, they have a parking deal and also the chairs and tables are large and spacious which you don't get in the CBD restaurants.
Food was pretty good and the seafood (as you would expect) very fresh and tasy (the scollops were still hanging on their shells!) and the crab excellent.
The environment is nothing to write home about but few Chinese mega restaurants are. It doesn't help when the wait staff are yelling at each other and vigorously chopping bits of fish in plain view.
And then there is the service. Even for Chinese restaurant standards, it was appalling. The crew seems less than clueless, the waiter took half the order then disappeared. And food was only half served (they delivered scollops but then didn't give us a fork to eat them with).
Things did improve however, when (seemingly the only) experienced waiter assigned himself to us when we started to get visibly annoyed. So, food is good and you get free and easy parking in the market (a big plus).
Went here for yum cha last Sunday with a group of seven of us & had a great experience. Arriving just before midday we got a table without waiting. The room is big & busy but with the lovely upholstered chairs, linen tablecloths & carpeted floor, the noise level was remarkably low & we were able to have a conversation accross the fairly large table with no problem.
It is also a nice change to have such huge windows in a yum cha venue, in this case overlooking the fishing wharves & Blackwattle Bay (although I could do without the television sets dotted along the wall & all playing!)
As yum cha goes this was as good as any I have experienced in Sydney. Plenty of food going round, plenty of variety, all hot & delicious & an absolute bargain at around $25.00 a head including a couple of beers. We will be back!
We are getting married in November and have booked our reception at Fisherman's Wharf Seafood restaurant. We had dinner on Sunday, 25 May to suss out a reception that was taking place that night and I can honestly say that the dishes we had were the best Chinese seafood dishes I have ever eaten (I'm a Canto ABC).
My brother was so impressed with the food that he refilled his rice bowl 5 times! The quality of the dishes is of high standard, and the service was impeccable. The staff are much friendlier than at other Chinese restaurants - they don't just throw the cutlery etc onto the table or act as though they are doing you a favour by serving you. The gigantic decorative fish tanks also add to the impressive interior design of the restaurant.
I also had to comment on the review posted by Ratatouille1 on 28 May; the reviewer complains about the ‘foul odour’ outside the restaurant, yet complains about the ‘non-fishy, drowning in soya sauce’ flavour of the fish. Firstly, every Chinese restaurant serves fish with soya sauce, together with shallots and ginger; thus the appeal of eating fish at a Chinese restaurant. Secondly, of course the odour will exist – it’s the Sydney Fish Markets!
To assist diners who plan on visiting the restaurant, here’s a fact that the previous reviewer obviously wasn’t aware of: the easiest access between the restaurant and the carpark is by walking along the promenade beside the water (where patrons of the Fish Markets eat during the day at the white picnic tables) instead of inside the arcade which I agree is wet and less than desirable. The promenade is the loading dock by day. Sorted.
This restaurant for me has become a major disappointment. After years of having bad chinese in Sydney, I came here for Yum Cha and it was quite good. Dinner on the other hand was another story.
Firstly, the staff here have no idea on what they are doing. At most restaurants, staff are assigned to sections and service the tables within that section. The staff on the dinner shift were wondering around aimlessly and were lazy. Tables that were vacated not cleaned up, plates with bones etc were not replaced, food was dumped onto the table and not served out. The waiters were scruffy and unkempt.
Let me comment on the lobster and steam fish which we had as part of the meal. The lobster (which was $180+) was overcooked and ruined. The fish had no "fishy" taste at all and was soaked in soy sauce. I guess it was just poorly prepared. The other dishes we had were passable but nothing to rave about.
When it was time to pay the bill, the waitress was like a hawk constantly looking down over our shoulders until at last we produced a credit card. Then they didn't (forgot?) serve the complimentary fruit and dessert. Being Chinese, I was disappointed. But not as disappointed as some other Chinese restaurants I have been to.
Finally, the walk to and from the restaurant is a downer as well. There is a foul odour emitted from the days training. The walk to the carpark is usually wet due to the cleaning done by the fish mongers when they close. I suggest not to bring the elderly to this locale since the carpark is uneven and the wet pavement would increase the risk of a fall.
Excellent food, service very good. Have eaten in hundreds of Chinese restaurants all over Australia and overseas (including Singapore, Hong Kong and China). This one is up there with the best (not talking about top end silver service restaurants where one would pay stacks more). No idea at all why some have received bad service. Have eaten there many many times and never once received poor service or poor food. (I am Cantonese Chinese.)
A group of 6 of us ate here after reading the review in SMH and shared the king crab as in the review. Extreme disappointment to say the least. Other dishes were not of even "basic" Chinese standard. An expensive bitter-taste evening. Will not go back!
Highly recommended. We ate here for yum cha and it was one of the best I've ever eaten. The food was delicious, great variety and good service. The ambience was outstanding and the decor was like sitting in a 5 star hotel. I can't wait to go back and highly recommend this place to anyone.
